What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?
editDescription - From January 24 to February 6, 2022, the seventh Technical Wishes survey will run on German Wikipedia, to determine the next area of improvements that WMDE's Technical Wishes team should focus on for the next two years.
The goal of this banner campaign is to make as many editors as possible aware of the survey and activate them to participate. A strong focus is to reach users who aren't usually active in meta discussions like surveys, so that more diverse people have a say in how Mediawiki should be improved.

Like in previous years, this banner will be shown on the different German-speaking wikis. Implementation will be taken care of by WMDE's Fundraising Tech team, represented by Kai Nissen (WMDE).
Metrics -
We will measure
- banner impressions
- clicks on the banner
- how often the banner was closed
daily, both for
- new users (edit count <= 200)
- experienced Users (edit count > 200)
What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page?
editBanners - Here is an example of what the 2020 banner looked like. The design will be the same this year, but the text will change a bit, and we might have different texts for different audiences (to be decided).

editHi Johanna Strodt (WMDE), please don't forget to add your request to the calendar to help others to keep track and plan campaigns. Thanks! Ciell (talk) 17:12, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Ciell Thanks for the pointer! I've added it to the calendar now. If you have any questions, please reach out. -- Greetings and Happy New Year, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 19:22, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks Johanna Strodt (WMDE). I understand WMDE has it's own CN banner admins: I think you do not need us volunteers to set this up for you? Just to be clear. Ciell (talk) 16:59, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Ciell. Exactly. I made this request to get community approval and to make our plans transparent, that's all. -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 08:27, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- Perfect, thanks for the reply. Ciell (talk) 08:59, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Ciell: Since we're talking :) – according to your experiences, when would expect community approval? -- Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 09:14, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- Have the local communities been alerted to this request anywhere? Since this is a recurring event and there were no problems in the past afaik, I think it safe to assume we can approve ~7 days after the message was communicated. Ciell (talk) 09:21, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Steinsplitter, @DerHexer: I'm pinging you because you're active on German-language wikis: Where would be a good place to communicate our plans for this banner? I'm assuming WP:Kurier is a bit too much, and WD:NEU is a bit too narrow. How do other initiatives do this? (If I remember correctly, we didn't communicate banner plans on dewiki before, but that can change, of course.). -- Thanks for your help! -- Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 09:50, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- This technical wishes survey was announced various times and the project page linked as well on multiple dewiki channels, including the mentioned Kurier. Furthermore, the survey took place multiple times before with hundreds of community members participating. Usually this was sufficient, as with new editor campaigns, etc. I don't think that it could get more community approval, to be honest. But my staff me also works at WMDE so that another perspective on that might make sense here. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 09:59, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- @DerHexer: Thanks a lot. Makes sense to me. Would you already like to leave your personal "approved" remark in the appropriate section? -- Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 10:03, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- As said, somebody else should probably approve it. I'm sure that Ciell or others will take a second look. —DerHexer (Talk) 10:40, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- Ah okay. I thought you didn't want to give the green light all by yourself. But I've seen on other requests here that several contributors placed a "support" template on the request, so I thought you might do the same here. Totally your call, though, obviously. :) -- Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 10:45, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Johanna, I'll take a closer look later today. Ciell (talk) 10:43, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- Bedankt! -- Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 10:46, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- I think it looks fine Johanna, and the WMDE team is definitely experienced enough to know what you are doing. :)) Ciell (talk) 20:28, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Ciell: Excellent! Thanks for your approval, and to everyone for making it through this longish thread. :) -- Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 08:59, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
