Description - Call for participation to African Film and Cinema 2024.

Culture Connect: African Film & Cinema is a new initiative under the umbrella of the Culture Connect Africa Project, developed by African & Proud (AP). Scheduled to run from February to March 2024, this program focuses on celebrating and enhancing the visibility of African cinema and film heritage. It includes a series of activities such as training sessions, edit-a-thons, and competitions. The aim is to engage a wide audience in exploring and promoting African cinematic culture on Wikipedia.

The primary target for this banner campaign is users in African countries, but it also aims to reach global audiences interested in African film and cinema.

Given the unique focus on African cinema, the campaign is expected to attract a diverse range of participants, both new and experienced in Wikipedia editing. The banner serves a dual purpose: promoting the event and recruiting new contributors to enrich Wikipedia's content on African cinematic heritage.

We will like to create the banner from existing / standard banners but I keep getting this message when I try to go to the exciting banner page;

Error loading banner preview You are not authorized to preview banners, or your edit token has expired. Please try logging in again or reloading the page.

Don't know how the banner creation works as this is my first. But a banner similar to the above is what we looking at with a scrolling banner, logo and linked text.

  • @Edriiic: Thanks for your first request. I will guide you through the process, no worries. At first, you cannot create campaigns and banners yourself. That's what the CentralNotice administrators myself are responsible for. Your request helps us to create the campaign. Some remarks:
    • We cannot use wiki markup in the banner source code, only HTML, JavaScript and CSS. However, I tried to create the campaign and banner as similar as possible. However, as you can see in the preview, there are some little changes. Can you provide a version of the logo without so much white space around it? Furthermore, you can see on the file page that the logo is proposed to be deleted because it lacks a permission to be published.
    • We can only enable campaigns for languages which are both available in the banner and landing page. I've added a translation option for the banner. Please add the texts yourself or motivate your communities to translate the texts as soon as possible. That's the translation link. Please also request a translation of the landing page: preparation of the page, activation of the translation by a translation administator, motivation of your communities to translate the texts as soon as possible.
  • Usually, we would also ask you to notify the affected Wikimedia projects on their village pumps. As this is limited to African countries (although I had to select each one individually), this is not fully necessary. Maybe you want to consider to inform English Wikipedia, though.
  • I will definitely need a better logo and really encourage you to mark the landing page for translation. As soon as this done and you approve the preview, I can enable the campaign. If you have any further questions, please let me know. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:29, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @DerHexer: thanks for your response on my request and also for the guidance.
I have now marked the landing page for translation, and also provided translation for banner with the link you provided.
I have also uploaded a new photo with less white background here.
The Banner looks very good, thank you! Just a little adjustment, please can the green boarder lines just be on the bottom part, but if that's not possible it should be on all the boarder lines of the leaderboard.
    Thanks. Edriiic (talk) 12:25, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Edriiic: Okay, I've added the green banner line only to the bottom and used the smaller logo, thank you! The rest also looks good to me. I've activated the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:10, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: Thank you! Everything looks sorted. Edriiic (talk) 20:16, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer @Edriiic Hi both, I am just now encountering this banner -- and I have several concerns:
    • First the activity does not look well designed for new editors (points are only rewarded for high skill activities, newcomers would not reasonably be expected to learn enough to get points).
    • Second by advertising a potential prize in the banner, we are targeting a not very genuine motivation for contributing from anonymous users (cash prizes based on volume are not a recommended practice with new editors, who are prone to overenthusiastic contributions that then become patrolling problems on the subsequent wikis).
    • Third the cash prize language may create both brand and other concerns (@DerHexer I would like to update some rules somewhere on this).
I recommend that we turn off the banner for anonymous users, and remove the language about the prize. Advertising that the project is a writing contest should be enough for experienced editors to understand that there is light competition, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 13:37, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds reasonable. I've removed the cash amount and disabled the banner for anonymous users for now. Please keep me updated how to proceed here. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:48, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
