About the submission

edit

Dagbani Wikipedia Saha, to wit, Time with Dagbani Wikipedia, is a tele-education program that seeks to recruit volunteers and train more people who are interested in contributing to the Dagbani Wikipedia and may otherwise not be able to attend our in-person workshops because of their location, time, and distance. As a community, we believe that digital TV as a mass communication channel has the potential to reach more volunteers in Ghana and beyond. In collaboration with Sagani TV, a northern-based free-to-air digital satellite TV channel, our community has successfully implemented this tele-education program for the past 2 years, providing anyone in Ghana and beyond access to Wikipedia training irrespective of their geographical location. The Dagbani Wikipedia Saha has helped us spread our wings and train more volunteers who seem out of reach because of hindrances to internet access, enabling their effective participation in our virtual training sessions. This program has become our flagship campaign program and has created more awareness about Wikipedia in northern Ghana.

Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)
The program Dagbani Wikipedia Saha, to wit, Time with Dagbani Wikipedia is a tele-education program that seeks to train people interested in contributing to the Dagbani Wikipedia and its sister projects who may otherwise not be able to attend our in-person workshops due to time and distance. Each week, a facilitator trains participants on different topics on Wikipedia, including practical hands-on sessions. We are adopting the Student Training Modules by Wiki Education to equip our audiences with the necessary skills they will need to contribute to Wikipedia. All contents are uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, Youtube channel, facebook and Instagram to enable us to gauge the show's impact and to also collect feedback from viewers.

The program helps us spread our wings and train more volunteers who seem out of reach because of a hindrance to internet access, enabling their effective participation in our virtual training sessions. The program features 3 experienced facilitators who take our intended audience through different topics from the Wikimedia projects. We also use the show to occasionally bring people up to speed on some of the activities of the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group. In this session, we will demonstrate how we implement the program, from shooting the episodes to editing and production. We also hope to present the metrics, the impact, and how other communities can replicate the initiative, especially indigenous communities, that are faced with challenges related to internet connectivity and the high cost of internet data.
