CIS-A2K/Events/Wikimedia & digitisation sessions in 150 year old libraries at Kolhapur and Satara

Due to the consistent digitisation program running for the last four years in Maharashtra, the old libraries with rare collections approach CIS-A2K regularly. Two such 150+ year old libraries invited us to understand the Wikimedia projects and the process of digitisation. We conducted sessions in Karveer Nagar Vachan Mandir, established in 1851 at Kolhapur and Shrimant Pratapsingh High School library founded in 1851 at Satara. This school is situated in old palace and well known as Dr. B. R. Ambedkar studied here.
The Wikimedia introductory session and orientation on digitisation process was conducted with the management members of both the libraries. The library at Kolhapur houses more than 100 manuscripts, about 3000 rare public domain books and plays from 19th century. The Satara library contains rare books from 18th & 19th century, maps and rare gazetteers. The workshop on metadata development and selection of books is proposed in next month to prepare background for digitisation. The Satara school is situated in old heritage building. It possesses many artifacts, monuments and paintings from 19th century. The comprehensive plan of digitisation will be prepared with local partner organisation, Lek Ladki Abhiyan.
