Birdsong and Centre for Internet & Society have started a Wiki Project on Sangli Biodiversity documentation. In the first phase, the knowledge about birds and butterflies in the Sangli region will be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons. The first workshop in the series was conducted on 16 January 2022 in the Birdsong office at Sangli. Total 12 participants attended this workshop. After the introduction to Wikimedia project family, specific focus was kept on Wikimedia Commons. The topics were explained through demonstration and elaborate discussions. These included – Scope of Commons, Image guidelines, Copyrights, Quality images, Featured Images, Valued images, Photography contests, Photo challenges and categorization. The participants learnt how to create account and uploading images on Commons. The category tree structure was developed for ‘Birds of Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation’. Under this category, the subcategories for habitats – Wetland, Grassland, Garden & Grooves - were created. The separate categories for Nesting colonies and Roosting colonies were created. The habitats were further divided into 13 locations, such as Shamraonagar, Krishna river, Shantiniketan, Kupwad etc.
The participants uploaded 24 images during the workshop with proper file name, description and added respective categories. More members will be involved in this Wiki project through offline and online training workshops. The dashboard has been created for tracking the progress.
