The XIII Language Festival

The XIII Language Festival was held on October 27, 2019 in St. Petersburg. The Higher School of Economics hosted and supported the festival, Russian Union of Esperantists was an organizer. The firs festival as mentioned in a leaflet “was held in 1995 in Tours, France. A year later it was held in Cheboksary, the capital city of Chuvashiaw:Russia. The similar festivals are usually held in Moscow, Minsk, Veliky Novgorod, Izhevsk, Ulyanovsk”.


There were 37 languages presented: Vietnamese, Polish, Armenian, Catalan, Hungarian, Romanian, Acient Greek. Etruscan and Nenets language, Chinese, Latin, Esperanto, Bashkir, Saami, Finnish, Ossetian, Aleut, Scots, Nahuatl etc.

The presentation of language aspect is possible too. For instance, "Myths about languages", "Chinese dictionaries", "Balcan songs", "Is there life after language death?", "How to create writing method to be liked by everybody?"

There is presentations about whole languages groups: Saami and Сelt language groups.

Basque song culture was presented by story about bertsolaritza. It is an unique song competition among adults and kids. Very popular due to bertsolaritza schools located everywhere. It is singing acient tradition with special rules.

The most important Wiki language environment moments were presented by Peterov Andrey, «Wikimedia RU» member, «Wikimedians of Erzya language User Group» coordinator, in his presentation - "Wiki projects as an important tool for Russian Federation languages' saving".

Editors of other Wiki projects and sections were welcome: Vyacheslav Ivanov told us about creation of Wikipedians North-Caucasus User Group and about departments of Wikipedia in Norther Caucasus.

The aim of the festival is to show languages’ diversity. Especially of those languages which native speakers are about 1-10 people.

The festival lasts 1 day. There are 11 speakers present every hour. It is difficult to choose which one to listen to. Language Festival will be held on the 1st of December, 2019 in Moscow.
