Babylan PH ends the year with edit Cook+EditFest

On December 20, 2020, five heirloom or traditional Philippine recipes were cooked by the Babaylan members from Pangasinan and Bicol and uploaded in Tagalog Wikipedia and Pangasinan Wikipedia, Bikol Wikipedia and Wikibooks. Photos of recipes, ingredients, people and the event were uploaded in Wikipedia Commons.

Ten young Filipinas who are pioneer member participants in the said Cook+Edit Fest assisted by two mall newbie editors. Dang Brazal, a Bikol Wikipedian assisted and taught editing lessons to the participants in Pangasinan via Google Meet. She walked them through the article creation and uploading process of their contents.

Kim Aquino a transwoman cooked Sinigang na Hito sa Saging at Kamyas recipe while Jasverenne Ferrer cooked a sweet dessert of Bananas in tapioca and jackfruit strips. Palitaw and Ginataang Kamoteng Kahoy were also served and documented.

Vanj Padilla, co-founder of Babaylan PH, a community for Philippine Women Wikimedian, welcomesthe participants as host and stated that heirloom recipes are also endangered since these dishes which our grandmother used to cook are not being prepared on the family table nowadays because most families especially the younger generation are conveniently consuming fast food, restaurant or cafeteria meals, processed, easily to cook food. Heirloom recipes normally take time to prepare and the process is quite tedious, that is why some call it Slow Food.

Padilla added that “In this era where time management and meal preparation are both a challenge, it is enlightening to share these vanishing recipes to the global free knowledge enshrined in Wikipedia. We will continue to populate these pages and encourage more people, especially women to document these wealth of cultural knowledge in Wikipedia for the future generations.”

The first Babaylan PH’s Cook+Edit Fest is also documented in film by a crew commissioned by an international organization. The event was held in Café Sentiments in Lingayen Pangasinan and some of the cook scenes are held in an outdoor set-up by the beach.
