Dear Wikimedia Affiliates and Community Members,

We are excited to announce our intent to form the Assamese Wikimedia Community, this group aims to establish a centralized hub for advancing the collective efforts that were previously pursued by different members primarily as individual initiatives. Additionally, this forum intends to consolidate all reports and documentation from past initiatives in one accessible location, providing valuable resources for future members. This user group aims on promoting and developing Wikimedia projects in Assamese, such as Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikiquote and other sister projects. Its key goals include enhancing Assamese-language content, fostering collaboration among contributors through meetups and workshops, and digitally preserving Assamese literature and culture. The group also emphasizes capacity building by mentoring new contributors and improving their editing skills. Additionally, it seeks to highlight Assamese Wikimedia initiatives globally while learning from other communities to enhance local projects. These efforts aim to ensure the sustainable growth of Assamese Wikimedia projects and preserve the region’s linguistic and cultural heritage.

Mission

The Assamese Wikimedia Community User Group is dedicated to enriching Wikimedia projects in the Assamese language through events such as group discussions and edit-a-thons. It works to raise public awareness about Wikimedia initiatives in Assam by organizing workshops and outreach programs. The group aims to collaborate with other Wikimedia communities, individuals, and organizations to promote Wikimedia projects in Assam and North-East India. It focuses on increasing content on Assamese Wikipedia and enhancing information about Assam on other Wikipedias. Additionally, it strives to unite Assamese-speaking Wikimedians worldwide on a single platform, fostering collaboration and strengthening the community's impact.

Focus Area

Our group will primarily focus on language, subject matter, or geographical area. Specifically, we will engage with the following:

Languages: Assamese.
Themes: Our themes include Assamese culture, history, heritage. Global knowledge, gender, history, culture, etc.

Geographical Region: We are based in the Northeast, India and plan to extend our activities within this area, fostering connections with local communities and institutions.

Current Location and Regional Activities

Our group is currently located in Assam, India and we aim to collaborate with local affiliates and communities across India, Bangladesh to ensure widespread participation and representation in our activities.We plan to engage in regional events, workshops, and partnerships to enhance our outreach and impact.

We welcome collaboration and support from other affiliates and individuals across the Wikimedia movement. We believe that working together with other user groups and affiliates will enhance our efforts and strengthen the global Wikimedia ecosystem.
