AfroCreatives WikiProject +film is the inaugural effort of AfroCreatives WikiProject. By mobilizing African film creatives, professionals, and film enthusiasts, ACWP +film aims to measurably enhance information on Wikipedia about the art and industry of African film, including:

• The history of African cinema
• Biographies of notable African creatives and professionals that span the industry
• Notable African movies and television series
• African studios, streaming platforms, awards, festivals, guilds, film schools, and other institutions that form the industry ecosystem
• Developments in animation, AR, VR, and other technologies shaping the African film industry
• Film financing, government policies, skills development, and other key industry issues

FESPACO Edit-a-thon

Date: Saturday, May 18 - June 1, 2024

AfroCreatives WikiProject is partnering with FESPACO, Africa’s largest film festival, in a continent-wide Edit-a-thon.

In the lead-up to the campaign, participants are encouraged to join online and/or in-person training sessions to learn how to contribute to Wikipedia, or if already familiar with editing Wikipedia, to refresh their skills. To accommodate as many people as possible, the following is scheduled:  

• Two “global” online training sessions in each of 3 languages (English, French, Arabic).
• A series of local online and in-person training sessions led by local Wikipedia organizers around the continent.

In addition to a general training session focused on Wikipedia:

• A training session (in French, Arabic, and English) focused on Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata, two affiliated projects within the Wikimedia family. For participants within the film industry with rights to images, here’s why Wikimedia Commons is especially relevant to you.

Why participate

1. Your contributions will increase African-generated content about the continent’s film sector on Wikipedia and the web.
2. You will help create awareness and interest among the general public about the project and create visibility of the African film on Wikipedia and its sister projects.
3. You will help build the capacity within the film industry to contribute knowledge to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
4. Help propagate the need to create more content about the film industry in Africa that promotes the culture, history, and heritage of our people.

New to editing Wikimedia?

If you are new to contributing to Wikimedia projects, we strongly encourage you to sign up for training session when you register to participate in the campaign. The sessions, led by experienced Wikimedians, will provide basic and essential editing know-how that will make it easy for you to participate in the campaign.

FESPACO Edit-a-thon Prizes

The FESPACO edit-a-thon allows participants many ways to contribute and compete for prizes. In addition to Wikipedia, contributions can be made to Wikidata as well as Wikimedia Commons.

On Wikipedia, contributions to create and expand new articles include copy editing; adding images; adding or editing references, film-related infoboxes, filmography tables, wikilinks, and links to external film databases; and categorizing articles, among other contributions.

The primary contribution on Wikimedia Commons is uploading images, audio, and video. On Wikidata, which is used to store structured data, such as information about people, places, and things, editors focus on making data-related entries and edits.

The Golden Screen Prize Awarded to the editor who has contributed the most bytes in the creation and/or expansion of Wikipedia articles about African film and television.

The Silver Screen Prize Awarded to the editor who has contributed the second highest amount of bytes in the creation and/or expansion of Wikipedia articles about African film and television.

The Bronze Screen Prize Awarded to the editor who has contributed the third highest amount of bytes in the creation and/or expansion of Wikipedia articles about African film and television.

Newbie Screen Prize Awarded to a first-time Wikipedia editor who has contributed the most bytes in the creation and/or expansion of Wikipedia articles about African film and television.

The Tahar Cheriaa Prize Named after the pioneering Tunisian film critic and founder of the Carthage Film Festival, awarded to the editor who has contributed the most substantive and well-written text-based contributions to new or existing Wikipedia articles on the subject of African film and television.

Thérèse Sita-Bella Prize Named after the Cameroonian director and one of Africa’s first female filmmakers, awarded to the editor who has made the most Wikipedia contributions centered on women in African film and television.

Screen Prize for Translation Awarded to the editor who has contributed the most quality translations on Wikipedia on the topic of African film and TV.

Wikimedia Commons Prizes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes awarded to participants who have uploaded the most African film and television-related images/videos/audios to Wikimedia Commons.

Wikidata Prizes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes awarded to participants who have documented the most African film and television-related entries to Wikidata.

Afro Creatives WikiProject +film is initially focused on the film sectors of Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda and Senegal. It is launching with a 3-week edit-a-thon campaign to generate a landmark number of contributions on the film industry of these four countries. Why participate? If you are new to contributing to Wikipedia, we strongly encourage you to sign-up for a brief 45-minute online training session when you register to participate in the campaign. The sessions, led by experienced Wikipedians, will provide basic and essential editing know-how that will make it easy for you to participate in the campaign. For participants who want some hands-on practice and support, the training session will be followed by a practice edit-a-thon session. Egypt: 3:00pm (GMT+2) Nigeria: 1:00pm (WAT) Rwanda: 3:00pm (CAT) Senegal: 11:00am (GMT) Campaign Rules All participants must create a Wikipedia account and be signed in before making any edits. Make sure you are registered on your country’s dashboard, so your edits can be tracked as part of the campaign. All contributions as part of the campaign must follow or be related to the theme of the campaign, African cinema, with a particular focus on Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal. Editing Articles outside this scope will not count. Edits should focus on fixing typos, adding categories, adding references, wikilinking, and creating stubs or articles. Any edits outside this such as adding infoboxes, images, etc. are welcome and may earn you additional points. Double/multiple performances of one task as several edits on an article count as one edit. For example, fixing two different typos over two different edits on an article counts as one edit, not two. Points are not given when an edit is made to correct a previous edit by the same participant. Responses to messages on talk pages and reverted edits do not count as an edit. Awards and Prizes The AfroCreatives WikiProject +film campaign is offering a series of country-specific awards in Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, and Rwanda, as well as international awards. All campaign participants will receive virtual certificates issued by the Wikimedia Foundation and be eligible to add a campaign userbox to their userpage. Local Awards  Outstanding Contributor Award – Awarded to the single most impressive contributor in each of the campaign’s four participating countries. ''What we're looking for: A high level of quantitative and qualitative contributions such as new articles and stubs, improvement of existing articles, and an innovative range of content additions such as infoboxes, images, audio pronunciations, and Wikidata items, among others. 'Outstanding Contributor – Runner-Up' Newbie Award – Awarded to the most impressive new contributor What we're looking for: Impressive level of contributions and proficiency with basic editing tasks such as adding wiki links, correcting typos and grammar, adding categories, and creating stubs. International Awards Star Performer – Awarded to the single most high-achieving contributor of the campaign across all countries. What we're looking for: This star among stars will have demonstrated overall excellence, an impressive range of edits and content creation, and exceptional levels of contribution. Quality of Content Award – Awarded to the most productive contributor of the campaign. What we're looking for: The most noteworthy number of edits that improve the quality and structure of articles. In addition to the number of bytes or characters added, contributions counted may include sections, references, categories, “see also” sections, infoboxes, and images, among others. Content Creator Award – Awarded to the most prolific creator of articles and stubs. What we’re looking for: A high level of contribution of newly created articles and stubs. Gender Award – Awarded to the most enterprising contributor of new content about women in film. What we’re looking for: New articles and stubs, as well as expanded text in existing articles. Subjects may include biographies of women in film, female-centered films and storytelling, and other general topics related to women in the film industry.
