Description edit

This proposed activity proposal is to convene 15 women leading the fight against climate change in Northern Uganda to a full-day Wikipedia content co-creation session to take place on Africa Environment Day / Wangari Maathai Day (03 March 2023). This co-creation session will be hosted at Amara Hub — a nonprofit community space that provides access to skills and resources for underserved communities and local leaders in northern Uganda to learn, connect and grow. The goal shall be to document real-life stories of women from northern Uganda working at the frontline of efforts to mitigate the negative effects of climate crisis on people's lives.

Activities on this day shall include:

  1. An introduction to the project, the Wikipedia platform, and the guidelines for creating content on Wikipedia;
  2. Breakout groups to inform the collective understanding of the impacts of climate change from the community perspective and review story content that forms potential content for the Wikipedia articles;
  3. Group session to create or update Wikipedia articles about the story content. Each group will be guided by a facilitator and encouraged to work collaboratively to ensure accuracy and comprehensiveness;
  4. Collecting testimonials and lessons learned from the Wikipedia content co-creation session from the participants.

Context edit

The activities outlined above are intended to help document the impact of climate change on women and girls in northern Uganda. Women are considered among the most vulnerable to climate change effects due to socio-economic disparities. Yet, they remain ideal climate champions since their presence and leadership strengthen climate action. With more frequent extreme weather events taking place in this region, it is essential to document how it affects the lives of local people and amplify the voices working to counter the negative effects.

Team edit

  • Bridget Kezaabu and Benjamin Ojok from Amara Hub: To lead community engagement and outcomes reporting

Fallout edit

  • By engaging local champions, these activities will help to create a comprehensive and accurate record of the situation in the region for a broader audience on Wikipedia.
  • Through the proposed activities, we shall raise awareness of climate change and empower local women and girls to take action in their communities.
  • Leveraging this activity taking place on Africa Environment Day / Wangari Maathai Day 2023 to celebrate the contributions made by women as change-makers in adaptation, mitigation and response to the multiple challenges arising from climate change.
