Description

The Fulfulde community in Nigeria faces numerous barriers in accessing critical information on the environment and climate change. Language proficiency is one of the key obstacles that prevent local communities from engaging and understanding the importance of environmental initiatives. This proposal aims to address these challenges by translating English articles on the environment into the Fulfulde language on Wikipedia, promoting awareness and understanding of environmental issues within the community.

To address the language barrier challenge faced by the Fulani community in accessing environmental information, this proposal aims to translate articles on the environment and climate change from English into the Fulani language. This effort aims to promote understanding and awareness of environmental issues among local communities, who are often left out of critical discussions and decision-making processes due to limited language proficiency.

The translation of environmental articles into the Fulani language will ensure that community members have access to information that is relevant to the and their daily lives. This will also increase their participation in environmental initiatives and discussions, leading to better representation and more effective solutions.

Additionally, by promoting environmental awareness and understanding, the Fulani community can be better equipped to take action towards a more sustainable future.

They will have a better understanding of the latest scientific findings on climate change, innovative solutions for mitigating environmental impacts, and the social and cultural dimensions of environmental challenges. This will also foster a sense of community and collaboration, as people come together to work towards a common goal.

TEAM

Usmanagm (Project lead): He is a native of the FULFULDE community and language. He has extensive experience as a Wikimedia projects editor and trainer. He has taken part in numerous Wikimedia projects, including serving as the project lead for the Wikipedia Awareness campaign in Akko and being a trainer and moderator for the Wikimedia Promotions at the Federal University of Kashere. He has also participated in the Wiki Loves Lagos Contest and is a bilingual Wikipedia editor with a focus on English, FULFULDE, and Hausa. In addition to his Wikipedia contributions, Usmanagm is a skilled development strategist, project manager, and consultant who has worked with both international and local organizations, such as the Centre for Information Technology and Development. He is also a recipient of the Global Youth Mobilization award.

Musaddam Idriss (Founder, Fulfulde Wikimedians User Group ): He is the founder of Fulfulde Wikimedia lbs User Group. He is a volunteer and an experienced Wikimedia projects editors who have successfully executed different Wikimedia projects in Nigeria. He is also part of the facilitators. He is currently a champion of the Fulfulde activation in Wikipedia.

Affern(Technical Officer): He is an experienced Wikimedia projects editor as well as a tech expert. He will be the technical Officer of the project.

Context

The project will take place in a Fulfulde community in Nigeria, with the goal of expanding the pool of Wikipedia editors, improving the skills of existing editors, and adding or enhancing content related to climate and the environment. The focus will be on translating articles from English to the Fulfulde language on Wikipedia.

The project will run for two days, and will be facilitated by a team of three individuals, with the expectation of 20 participants, resulting in a total of 23 attendees.

The goal of the project is to translate at least 100 articles related to the climate and environment from English to the Fulfulde Wikipedia. Progress will be monitored through the use of Dashboard and Xtool.

Fallout

Bringing this project to fruition will address the challenges posed by a shortage of local information on the environment and climate change on FULFULDE Wikipedia, as well as the language barriers that exacerbate the urgency of mitigating the effects of climate change. By doing so, the project aims to cultivate an informed and involved local community that can actively participate in finding sustainable solutions. The edit-a-thon will raise awareness about environmental and climatic changes and bridge the language gap by translating articles into FULFULDE.

In addition, the project will enhance the information available on Wikipedia by either adding new content or improving existing content.
