Description

edit

The Niger Delta region of Nigeria is faced with numerous interlinked environmental issues which are often the result of a combination of oil exploration in the region and the continuous change in the earth's climate. The region has, in recent times, experienced unprecedented high levels of flooding and pollution (water, air, land and plastic) which has led to the destruction of lives and properties. In fact, pollution in the region has exposed many residents to lead, black soot, mercury, and other heavy metals which are injurious to their health. Aside flooding and pollution, there is also the issue of biodiversity loss and mangrove forest depletion in the region, despite the region housing the fourth largest mangrove forest in the World. In fact, a review of crude oil impact on mangrove shows that 37 percent of the global impact has occurred in the Niger Delta. However, most of these information are either missing or poorly documented in Wikipedia. Also, several cities in Nigeria have experienced varying degrees of the effects of climate change such as drought and desertification, variation in rainfall pattern, flooding, heat waves, increased herder-farmer crisis etc. However, most Wikipedia articles about the different cities in Nigeria do not have a section dedicated to Climate and Environment. To this end, this project seek to address the content gap in Wikipedia by organizing a Write-a-thon aimed at creating and improving Wikipedia articles around the triple planetary crisis, with specific focus on Nigeria.

Context

edit

In order to help close the Wikimedia knowledge gap around the triple planetary crisis in Nigeria, we will work with members of the academic community, specifically students and lecturers from the Environmental Management and Toxicology Department at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun. They will help provide local expert knowledge around the subject matter in English Wikipedia.

We will organize one in-person training and one closely monitored write-a-thon to help achieve the goal set out in this project. A project page and list of articles to be created or improved will be provided by the organizing team.
