Africa Environment WikiFocus Celebrates Wangari Maathai Day

“No matter how dark the cloud, there is always a thin, silver lining, and that is what we must look for. The silver lining will come, if not to us then to next generation or the generation after that. And maybe with that generation the lining will no longer be thin.” ― Wangari Maathai, Unbowed: A Memoir

Creation (or improvement) of English Wikipedia articles Climate in CountryX

When we analysed the content of the English Wikipedia articles, we realized that only a handful of African countries had a dedicated article about Climate, and when there was one, it was usually very short (check Climate of Nigeria). In the large majority of cases, the only information about climate of a country is a small paragraph in the country article and in the Geography article (check Geography of Togo). In a few cases, there is absolutely zero information about the climate of the country (check Burundi).

In comparison, many countries of other parts of the world have a very detailed article about the climate of their country (check Climate of the United States), or about climate change impact in their country (check Climate change in France).

We then suggest that after the month of March, most African countries would benefit from an article about their climate and/or about climate change. You may find below a table to help you identify the gaps. Please create climate articles, or improve the current stubs. You may use the resources provided listed in that page to help you. Please note that we do not have participants from all countries... so please feel free to ADOPT a country (beyond yours...)

Creation (or improvement) of French Wikipedia articles Climate in CountryX

When we analyzed the content of French Wikipedia articles, we realized that only two African countries had an article dedicated to climate (namely Climate change in Senegal and Climate of Maroc). In the vast majority of cases, information about a country's climate is less detailed in the country's article. But in the article Geography (see Geography of Algeria), the paragraphs are more detailed. In any case, there is almost no information on the climate of French-speaking countries.

In comparison, many countries of other parts of the world have a very detailed article about the climate of their country (check Climate of the United States), or on the impact of global warming in their country (check Global warming in the UK).
