In your ideal world, what does the affiliate model and ecosystem look like? In the face of the trials that our mission demands, the affiliates must cast aside its self-interests and the divisions that separate us, harmonizing into a powerful, singular melody. It is a call for the developed affiliates to rise up and lend their strength to the new affiliates, as we come together to uplift our communities with unwavering support and unbreakable unity and that all groups of individuals (non-affiliates, like the emerging communities) are bound by the same regulations as other groups of individuals.
In your ideal world, what are AffCom’s roles and responsibilities in relation to the movement and affiliates? The AffCom should oversee associations of individuals utilizing the Wikimedia project brand and collaborate closely with staff teams, such as the Community Resources team. This will ensure that only well-structured affiliates are eligible for higher funding and prevent associations with limited volunteer and staff support —specifically, for example, those comprising only eight volunteers and four staff members funded by the community— while ensuring that their activities genuinely benefit Wikimedia project communities rather than becoming a burden. Additionally, the AffCom should provide guidance to new affiliates as they integrate into the Wikimedia ecosystem. This involves facilitating their initial steps, promoting transparency within their structure, and minimizing potential challenges. The AffCom should serve as a welcoming steward for affiliates, aiding them in navigating early development, offering advice for effective growth, and fostering constructive dialogue to ensure alignment and consensus on progress. Moreover, the AffCom should address any missteps with affiliates in a supportive manner, working collaboratively to resolve issues and encouraging mutual learning throughout the process.
What role within AffCom are you most interested in: advisory or voting member? Voting member, but I can also be an advisor if necessary.
