I think this needs to be updated

I think it might be time to update the main page. I noticed some things a while ago but since I'm not an admin I couldn't change it so I decided to just see how long it would take. Since it hasn't been done at this point though I thought I would mention it. The Main page still links to the Toolserver and that link no longer works...so if we keep it at all, it should be noted as historical. Also, why do the things like Wikipedia link to the English version? I think these should link to a central page rather than be language specific. Thats enough for now, if there is interest in fixing it, I'll bring up some more. Reguyla (talk) 19:37, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

@Reguyla: Actually, unlike enwiki, any autoconfirmed user can edit the Main Page here, but not directly (most vandals/spammers aren't knowledgeable enough to find the actual code). For example, the sister projects template code is semi-protected: Template:Main_Page/Sisterprojects/Code, and the full code (not localized) is also editable, as well as the English version and other translations. I think removing the toolserver is a great idea, since it's been dead for months. Just make it look symmetrical if possible. Feel free to make small or non-controversial changes without asking, but I think anything even slightly debatable should be discussed first due to the prominence of the Main Page. Currently the sister projects code links to the localized version of Wikipedia, Wikibooks, etc. instead of the multilingual portal. Maybe there's a way to fit both links in without making it look ugly. If not, then I think you would need consensus for that. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:47, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, Whenever I see the main page I see its protected and is been that way for months so I never bothered to follow the code back to its source. As for the multilingual, I think that should be the main link for this project with maybe a small link for en and a couple of the larger common ones. Maybe I'll draft something up in the sandbox. @PiRSquared17: Take a look at Template:Main Page/Sisterprojects/Code/Sandbox and tell me what you think.
  1. I split the technical stuff to a separate section
  2. I renamed the second section to better match what it is
  3. moved the toolserver link to historical (at least for now).
  4. I am also thinking about moving a couple around in the top one. IMO, the top row should be Wikipedia, Wiktionary and then commons. The Incubator is important but not top row important.
I'll keep tweaking it in the sandbox before I do any live changes. Reguyla (talk) 11:46, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
It seems mostly fine, but why have you put MediaWiki and Wikitech where they are? PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:10, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
I didn't, I just adjusted the list to realign them. They are in the same order they were when I started. Reguyla (talk) 19:55, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
What I meant to ask is why they aren't under "technical". PiRSquared17 (talk) 20:03, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
Oh, well they certainly could be. Reguyla (talk) 12:37, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
I don't like a whole new section for Toolserver unless we've other projects to add to that section. --Glaisher (talk) 16:24, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
That makes sense, I could add it to the technical section but I do think we need to mark it somehow to show that its no longer used for anything other than historical. Then again, there could be some that are historical that I am unaware of that could be added to the historical section. I spent most of my time over the years at the ENWP until the editing there got so toxic. I have only ventured out fairly recently. Reguyla (talk) 12:56, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
I made a few more changes if anyone wants to take a look at it here. I reordered a couple things in the first section, eliminated the historical section and moved the Incubator to the Admin and Outreach section (although I can move that back if people don't like it there. I still need to fix the alignment of the 2 bottom projects in the Content section but didn't yet in case I need to put incubator back in the top. Let me know what you think. Reguyla (talk) 14:05, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
I went ahead and updated the template on the main page. I think it looks a lot more organized and some often used things are organized to be more prominent. If you don't like it though feel free to revert it or let me know if you want any changes. Reguyla (talk) 17:33, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
