Welcome to our community of Wikimedians for Disaster Response!

Introduction edit

Objectives edit

When disaster strikes at scale, Wikimedia usually responds: articles are written or updated, media are uploaded and integrated into these articles, references are added, queries and front page items produced and so on. This group will ask how we can respond more efficiently and in a way that can be more tightly integrated with emergency responses from other communities, both on the ground and online. This relates directly to   Target 1.5 of the Sustainable Development Goals (Q57590322),   Target 2.4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (Q57590466),   Target 11.5 of the Sustainable Development Goals (Q57590860),   Target 11.b of the Sustainable Development Goals (Q57590865) and   Target 13.1 of the Sustainable Development Goals (Q57590883).

History edit

After a good number of disaster-related activities in different Wikimedia contexts, this group was formed during a Wikimania 2017 session on the topic. It was then followed up by a Disasters meetup at Wikimania 2018. At Wikimania 2019, a poster on the theme was presented: What is the role of Wiki during volcanic eruptions?. Since 2020, Wikimedia projects have been heavily engaged in covering the COVID-19 pandemic, for which dedicated WikiProjects and related initiatives have been launched across numerous Wikimedia wikis, e.g. on Wikidata.
