Introductory Training Sessions at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam edit

In 2019, the six-year programme Disclosing Architecture began improving the visibility and accessibility of the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning, funded by a grant from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Under the umbrella of Disclosing Architecture, projects involving linked open data (LOD) and Wikimedia are in development. In these, a major goal is to create durable connections between the collection, linked open data and the end user. The implementation of DERA, which enables the enrichment of the collection by third parties, is an important pillar in this.

Wikimedia and the Wikimedia Community are logical partners in this process. To prepare our colleagues, a series of introductory training sessions on Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata and Wikipedia was held in June at Het Nieuwe Instituut in collaboration with WMNL and two Wikimedia volunteers. Attendees were shown how Wikimedia projects work and were given examples of how to integrate Wikimedia into their own workflow.

Next, we will host more focused training sessions on editing and Wikitools such as ISA so that Het Nieuwe Instituut staff members can become more competent and confident in editing Wikimedia and assisting in content donations.

Het Nieuwe Instituut’s project page was also launched in June. Here we will post regular updates on Wikimedia projects and wish lists. For more information, you can email wikimedia hetnieuweinstituut.nl or contact Het Nieuwe Instituut. Content donations will be the next step. We are currently preparing several sets on the work of Theo van Doesburg and also Women in Design.

On June 26, the last session of Wikimedia Nederland's Wikimedia training for Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean has taken place. With this final practical session, the three-month masterclass series has concluded.

Nearly 40 participants from Suriname, Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao and the Netherlands followed this training. Some attendees are staff of smaller or larger GLAM institutions; quite a few of the participants are also researchers, writers or teachers. A diverse group of trainers and guest speakers introduced the course participants to various Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata and Wikisource) and showed them practical applications of the potential of these projects.

In the next months, Wikimedia Nederland will check in with several course participants to talk about follow-up projects, building upon various interesting ideas and topics that have emerged during this course.

The course's project page provides an overview of the program and contains recordings of presentations. In the Commons category, you can also find recordings and additional supporting materials.

On 19 June, the Dutch-language Wikipedia celebrated its 20th anniversary. Naturally, Wikimedia Nederland sent out a press release, and it was widely picked up by both national and local media. Radio, TV and newspapers paid ample attention to it. Wikimedia Netherland has linked a total of 11 Wikipedians to media channels for interviews. A complete overview of all media coverage can be found on this Wikipedia page.

New website edit

Thanks to the preparatory work of a Think Tank, the valuable feedback of a Sounding Board Group, the contributions of Wikimedians and the efforts of web agency PanArt, Wikimedia Netherlands launched its new website on 21 June. The website has a strong visual character with a lot of attention for source citations and filtering capabilities so that all target groups can quickly find the information they need.

Brochures edit

With the launch of the new website, the leaflets and brochures of Wikimedia Nederland have also been updated where necessary.
