Abstract:

In the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion against Ukraine we implemented the practice of “temporary administrators” on Ukrainian Wikipedia to help fight vandalism and disinformation. As community activity dropped sharply amidst rocket attacks and forced displacement, we needed all the reliable hands we could get, so it became much easier to get admin rights temporarily. Now that we’re 2.5 years into the war, it has morphed from an emergency stopgap measure into a useful tool that has other benefits, such as providing a stepping stone for new admins and making it easier for them to get permanent rights eventually. I’ll discuss this practice and its implications in this lightning talk.
