Body edit

Wikipedia Asian Month is an initiative for bring the Wikimedia Asian Communities together and improve the Wikipedia articles about Asian countries and regions on each language version of Wikipedia. During this month, over twenty Wikipedia communities will launch an online edit-a-thon, encouraging Wikipedians to improve the quality of Asian topics as well as help the rest of the world understand more about Asia and its many cultural groups.

As the part of cultural exchange, the online edit-a-thon will ask participants to write at least five articles about Asian, and those who do this will receive a postcard from seven Asian Wikipedian communities: Mainland China, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. Postcards from each country or region will be specially designed with local feature. For example, Indian postcards will use the photo from Wiki Loves Food.

Wikipedia's Asian Community still has a very high potential—in 25 language versions of Wikipedia, only 9 are from the continent.[1] In terms of readership, the global unique visitors of Wikimedia projects total about 374.82 million (June 2015, not including those from mobile devices), but unique visitors from the Asia Pacific region total only 83.64 million, only about 22.31% in all.[2] Considering that 32% of the world's Internet users come from the Asia-Pacific region,[3] or 46.53 global population in only six countries out of 10 most populous countries in the world,[4] Wikimedia Asian Community still has many room to growth.

Wikimedia Asian Community is also an emerging community. Since the first user group is recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation in January 2013, there are 13 Asian user groups has been recognized out of 34 geographical user groups. Some Asian language versions of Wikipedia does not have many articles, but they have a pretty large active community and growing rapidly. Both Thai Wikipedia and Azerbaijani Wikipedia have less than a hundred thousand article ranks 56th and 55th in the list of Wikipedias by article count, but ranks 26th and 34th if by active users. [1]

There are many relatively small Wikipedias in Asian, as they have limited capability to run an online edit-a-thon or writing the grant proposal, Wikipedia Asian Month is the project that offer the opportunity for all community participate without worrying event page designing, tool developing and other logistics issues.
