Ei rundhanda pengegåve frå Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence [ai]2, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, og Google, Inc. har gjort den innleiande utviklinga av prosjektet råd.
Wikidata (www.wikidata.org) har til mål å skape ein fri verdsfemnande kunnskapsbase som kan lesast og redigerast av både menneske og datamaskiner. Databasen skal gje data på alle språka i Wikimedia-familien, og gje samla tilgang til data på liknande vis som Wikimedia Commons gjev det for multimediafiler. Wikidata er eit nytt Wikimedia-prosjekt.
It enables central management of interwiki links located in the sidebar, between projects' language versions and across projects covering given subjects, which was previously implemented through individual interwiki links at page bottoms.

Wikidata is currently the largest Wikimedia project, with over 100 million content pages.
