Abstract:

Once communities are legally registered entities in their countries, they are bound to certain rules and statutory obligations regarding data they collect. These communities and community organisers normally request their members and other participants for unique, self-identifying data for a number of valid reasons. But after it is received and used for the purpose it was requested for, who is responsible for this data? How is it used and cared for? As an organisation that collects, creates, consumes and enables the dissemination of a number of resources under a free licence, many Wikimedia communities are bound by local legislation on data but may not be aware until they are confronted by the law and it may be a bit late

  • Raise awareness for participants and the communities they represent on being mindful about the local and legal environments they operate on and the influence it may have on operations ;
  • Addressing the knowledge gap on Data Protection and Privacy for communities hence increasing levels of compliance and volunteers’ trust on how their personal data is accessed and shared ;
