Abstract:

Wikidata, a community-curated knowledge base related to Wikipedia, affects our access to information, wielding more power than many realize. Seeing an opportunity for improving access to knowledge and promoting their collections, African librarians through the AfLIA Wikidata Project have learnt about Wikidata and contributed to it in various ways as a result. One growing area of activity is in Wikidata’s scholarly citation data, but that participation has largely concentrated on the global North, leaving a gap in its African content, collections, research and scholarly output coverage. This presentation demonstrates how this gap matters to African librarians and shows how they contributed to efforts to fill it.
