Abstract:
Since its earliest days, the success of the Wikimedia movement has been based on the collective efforts of individuals who come together to form a community. This success is not just in terms of the number of editors, but also the ability of our projects to persist in the face of government legislation. This workshop will demonstrate how Wikimedians in diverse contexts have built partnerships in order to better advocate for policy goals such as digital inclusion. The allies with which they work range from local artist coalitions and research institutions to international nonprofits and political entities like the African Union and digital rights advocacy based institutions.

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region?
Participants will learn from Wikimedians who have worked with allies outside of the movement. Wikimedians will share how these partnerships helped develop key areas for strengthening the African Wikimedia community like policy discussions, community engagement and strategy development. We will document the session in a Diff article for future reference, and learnings from other communities or individuals and feedback will be incorporated in a strategy working document including recommendations for building a stronger African community in policy discussion, strategy and community development. New networks built during this session will continuously be engaged via in-country projects and collaborations on related topics.
