| Abstract:
Formal partnerships are a strong tool in creating greater impact as a global Movement. It is a means to overcome silos and pull our resources together in our mission to make knowledge more accessible to everyone. How can we ensure an innovative working collaboration across communities at different levels of affiliation, that is, Chapters, Usergroups, or thematic organizations? In this session we wish to create a space for knowledge exchange on the topic of collaboration across affiliates and cultures. In 2023 we have set up a strong partnership involving six affiliates from across the globe: Wikimedia Argentina, Wikimedia Deutschland, Wikimedia Serbia, Wikimedia Community Usergroup Kenya, Wikimedia Community Usergroup Tanzania, and Wikimedia Community Usergroup Uganda. Together, we set out to build an innovation infrastructure that both serves the communities within the respective regions, as well as benefits our work as a movement beyond regional limitations. For this to work, each partner builds on their individual strengths and resources available. We aimed to create a truly equitable partnership and in this session we will share our knowledge on what worked well, but also some unforeseen mishaps and learnings from working from different backgrounds and cultures. Session participants will hear about lived experiences and learn about the benefits of teaming up with several affiliates and how we can use this for our benefit in capacity building and knowledge sharing. We wish to inspire many more cross-affiliate partnerships to come, and also receive input from African Wikimedians, about existing initiatives on the African continent or in the Wikimedia Movement. |
