Welcome to Meta! edit

Hello Rosenkohl, and welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Meta:Metapub (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). If you would like, feel free to ask me questions on my talk page. Happy editing!

Terms of use/de edit

Hi. I just wanted to drop by and say how much the Foundation has appreciated your taking the time to translate this document. It seems to have increased input from German readers, which is so important. I hope that we will soon have other languages as well.

I have added a tag to the top to let readers know that the current version may not reflect the English language version, given that it keeps being heavily modified. I'm happy to say that some of the Wikipedia.de community on IRC helped me with that, as my German is very basic. :) If you happen to know any contributors who might be available to help catch up the documents, or if you can help with that yourself, that would be grand. In any event, I do thank you for putting in the time to get it going. :) Clearly, that was no small task! --Mdennis (WMF) 15:54, 20 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello Mdennis, it would be a pleasure for me if the translation, which other users have proofread and corrected, can help the Foundation. Due to the formalized character of the Terms of use draft doing the translation was mainly a routine work for me. Probably it is most important and difficult that specific legal terms are translated correctly into the German, and I hope some German legal experts will further check and improve the translation.
In fact, I had expected that the new Terms of Use would be enacted on 8 or 9 October no matter what, and my hope was that there would take place a more active and detailed critical discussion of the proposal within the German Wikipedia. Perhaps I have missed something, but at least the page de:Wikipedia:Projektdiskussion/Neufassung_der_Nutzungsbedingungen has been quite silent (even after the translation was posted). However, a number of users who I know are active on de.wikipedia have also participated here on talk:Terms of use. To me it appears that the detailed and activ work which is happerning here, and even under the pressure of a set time limit, can only be done in one language and on a centralized page.
I must admit that did cease to watch, and to participate on meta after 7 October, because then had expected that the new Terms of Use would be enacted the following days. Now I just see that the contenct page is still being changed during the last days; and it seems even the discussion has been reopened for another month!? I agree that Terms of use/de should be updated. Of course it should be as soon as the English version has officially been finished and enacted. However it might perhaps be usefull to make an intermediate update of the translation, greetings --Rosenkohl 12:40, 21 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. :) Because the community has been so interested in talking about the Terms of Use, our attorney Geoff has extended the period that the discussion is open. I'm not sure now how much longer he plans to keep it open, but he is still listening to feedback and still changing the document. He would very much like to get more feedback from the German community and from other languages. I certainly do agree, though, that the central work can really only happen on one page. I wish we had resources to translate it into all of the active languages we have and to coordinate discussion so that people who want to express opinions who don't write English fluently could still get their thoughts out there. :/ I am getting ready to try to get the word out to even more projects, but I know even as I do that only those people who do read English fluently are likely to benefit. --Mdennis (WMF) 16:06, 21 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
