Bot reports ...

Hi Herbythyme. I have programmed the linkwatchers and COIBot now in such a way that it reports xwiki spammers to meta. It saves the reports in Talk:Spam blacklist/XWiki BotReported (you may want to watchlist these). Please be careful when adding these to the blacklist, the database is not really big, and it may be good links (but for what I have seen, it seems to be trash normally what we catch with these parameters). When I have time I will have a look at the header text or at the parameters. Happy blacklisting! --Beetstra 17:00, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, this is permanent. I guess most qualify for blacklisting though, but it has to be met with a bit more care. If you are not sure, just decline. The bots remember which ones they reported here, and will (should) not report them again. When the spamming persists, then the link will be noted in the end (or on IRC, or via the linkreports from COIBot) and a regular request can be made. See you around! --Beetstra 17:26, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Blacklist logging

Hi Herby.

In responding to an en:white list request I noticed this addition you made to the meta blacklist hadn't been logged. I went to the log to see if I could help out by adding it but there don't seem to be any sections for logging after July 2007. Since I've never logged a blacklisting before I'm a little unsure what to do. If you can give me some pointers it couldn't hurt for me to learn. If you just want to do it yourself the original request is here. Thanks. -- SiobhanHansa 13:30, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wow - that's frustrating! So it turns out you did log it - I just couldn't find it on the page until I went in to edit! Sadly splitting looks like it may be the best bet. Two pages to search is annoying but not much more than having to edit in order to search (which you know will to lead to accidental edits and the like - not to mention people like me bumbling around not knowing what's going on). Another approach might be to trawl through and remove sites that are no longer a concern (since I assume the problem is the size). But I can't see many volunteers for that (my hands are firmly down by my side!). -- SiobhanHansa 14:24, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

no log

Just unblacklist it in that case. I try very hard to log everything, but in this instance I did not. Worst case that happens is it spams again and we have to re-blacklist it. —— nixeagle 18:02, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Log issues

Ok, I've fixed the issue. What I've done is instead of using an external link, simply linked to the bot reports using normal [[wikilinks]]. We don't have to link to the specific version as the page itself has a history, and the page won't change again unless someone edits it to add more detail, or the link gets re-added. The latter is impossible if the link is on the spam blacklist. —— nixeagle 13:45, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

As far as the transclusion issue goes: I don't know what caused that. The transclusion of the names themselves could not have been causing the issue could it? Otherwise someone must have added the external link to one of the subpages or the main SpamReportBot/cw page. :S Do you have any further information on this one? Thanks. —— nixeagle 13:45, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I see the issue here: what happens is one of the templates is causing the blacklist to trigger when included. ({{LinkSummary|www.thecosplayworld.com}}). the problem is the link is included inside of that template. I can see two solutions to this one: 1) remove the offending links from the template, or 2) use a whitelist to whitelist those links (the toolserver domain). —— nixeagle 14:01, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Beetstra and I are working it now. The problem is the {{LinkSummary}} template used. Is there a meta wide whitelist? We need to place toolserver on that whitelist if possible. Whats happening is the links to the various tools trigger when we add the respective links to the blacklist. —— nixeagle 14:35, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah thanks. Both problems now solved. What I did was whitelist the links being used in the template so they won't trigger the blacklist. I commented what I did to the whitelist on the whitelist proper. You can see what I did at MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. Thanks for the help again :) —— nixeagle 15:04, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
The problem is the regex on the blacklist, not the transclusion: \b.*\.Xhecosplayworld\.com\b is wrong, it should be \bXhecosplayworld\.com\b. Moreover, it allows http://Xhecosplayworld.com (QED). --Beetstra 15:13, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

New old case

Hi Herby. The site conflictologist.narod.ru was added to the blacklist on 7 February [2], after a masive spam activity (over 300 links in various wikis). The owner of that site are Vladimir Nosov, who was warning about this spam many times. This user erase the warnings many times. The 5 March this domains was removed from the spam blacklist in response to site-owners' requests and his pressure, who promise that he won't spam anymore. [3]

But after this, the site-owners' inmediately began again to spaming. In only one month he place again over 60 spam links, and continue spaming to today [4]

Before this, you decline the site-owners' requests [5].

A new proposed addition of this site to the blacklist was made again on 8 april [6], but this request are not responsed yet, and the site-owners' continue to spaming after this.[7]

Do you can stop this spam, please?. Thank in advance. --Posibb 08:31, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for stop the spam from conflictologist.narod.ru!
I must notify you too, that this spamer will pressing the too russian Meta administrator VasilievVV for unban. The last time the spamer do it and achieve the unban. [8]
Abouth the good faith. As you can see here [9] that site was removed from the ru-wiki on a "good faith" basis too.
After this, the ru-wiki administrators not gave the permissions to restore links to this site. See: [10],
But the user Vladimir Nosov placed again spam. Because this, three days ago 10 March, the administrators of ru-wiki again warning Vladimir Nosov against his spam. See: [11],

BTW, about the dynamic IP. I must note, that on 11 february this user Vladimir Nosov send public threat to use proxy connections for spam and vandalism: [12]
“напрасно Вы тратите время на откаты. Я ведь могу их делать в розницу и малозаметно, просить знакомых, делать дело через липовые IP.”

Translated:
“You spend time in vain to setbacks me. Because I can do them in retail and few visible, can ask friends, or do things through false IP.”

Regards and thank you again.

kanusur

From [13] I gather it wasn't massive spam that needed global blocking (only one insertion on major wikis, likely reverted, and on eswiki should have been used local list) On eswiki we're getting several complaints about nakon's urlblocks since he's blocked major newspapers and the alike thinking they're spam. es:Drini 15:56, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

you're right, I'll relist. I jsut checked all the recent Nakon additions to avoid similar problems since we've got 2 complaints this and following sections about global urlblocks added recently by nakon. So I removed preemotively the other one matching the same pattern. es:Drini 16:04, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bots will be bots …

… but humans don't have to be and I sure wish the they'd use more judgement in assessing the spam reports bot bring them. Today, I've seen flaps over the blacklisting of Central America's leading newspaper and the University of California, Berkeley's press.

Leaving aside the bot issue, on en.wikipedia we also had >1500 links blacklisted before cleanup in one day when you combine freerepublic.com, horizonpress.com and wargs.com.

Yeah.... (I noticed them!). I've reblocked those that are obvious. However this suggests that you maybe need to think about this one - I'm not saying it should be unblocked but I'm not sure. Equally maybe look at this which is kinda related. I used to block them by the bucket load but I'm tending towards waiting for something disruptive now. If you look at the wp bot page you'll see that plenty have legit edits - ho hum, decisions, decisions! Cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:00, 26 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

GIFT on DNAD

I restored the content and fixed that link, by the way. I just wanted to point out that in reverting my entire edit you removed both that link and the functioning link directly to the web comic from the "External Links" section. That made me suspicious for a bit until I noticed that the first link was indeed hitting the wrong namespace, so it does seem that your edit was in good faith. Thanks for catching that.

(By way of explanation, the GIFT is an extremely popular (8,000+ Google hits) expression of the same sort of concept that the DNAD essay is talking about.) --❨Ṩtruthious ℬandersnatch❩ 13:43, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for blocking that for me. There is another account I believe should be blocked; User:Senang Hati. Senang Hati was the original name of w:User:Jack Merridew; it was renamed. Later a bunch of accounts were created on different wikis using this name; the one on en:wp was renamed but the others are still snoozing. I would like to assure you that if you review what I've listed at User talk:Jack Merridew/Matrix you will find another half dozen or so that you'll feel confident blocking after you investigate a bit. not spam

I found www.islamhouse.com website in the spam list. I think its addition is wrong. there were only 7 links in en.wikipedia and 8 in ar.wikipedia. If some are inappropriate they should be removed rather than blocking the site. The site is nothing to do with spam, it's library of important Islamic books and valuable sources. For example the Qur'an in N'ko can be downloaded from it and many rare books and languages. Please unblock the site. Maymana 20:57, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

COIBot/XWiki

Hi, I have reinstated some old code (actually, wrote something new) to make COIBot report some XWiki things since SpamReportBot is offline. The reports are here: User:COIBot/XWiki. This may need an own log-snippet, and should be put into the archive regularly, we may need to discuss these things.

These reports get generated once per domain, first time within minutes after the third link to the third wiki has been added. COIBot then refreshes regularly its reports until the additions stop. Let me know if there are things that need to be changed, though I may not be too responsive the next couple of days (still traveling). Re: Sorry!

Don't be sorry to request help, it's really appreciable to see you're taking care of the French Wikipedia (among other projects), so thank you!

You probably found the page fr:Wikipédia:Vandalisme en cours used to report vandalism. To report other abuses (more complex or less urgent) such as the one you described, you can use fr:Wikipédia:Requête aux administrateurs, if the assistance of an administrator may be required (you can write in English if you want, of course).

As for the other contributor, Vissec, I do not find the last link they added particularly inappropriate, since it is almost the only online ressource available and adds some value for the reader (for example there are some photos of the château). This personal website, that wouldn't qualify as a reliable source, might be inappropriate in other circumstances, for example in a featured article, or if there are better links or sources available.

Regarding the COI policies, there is just the guideline fr:Wikipédia:Autobiographie for autobiographies; there is also another page in need of translation, fr:Wikipédia:Conflit d'intérêts, and that's pretty much all I can find directly related to COI. As a general rule, such problems are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, and common sense applies. If in any doubt, they're submitted to the review of the community, generally on fr:Wikipédia:Le Bistro. Best regards, Korg 16:51, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome! :) Korg 20:49, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your accusation against myself

Sir, the issue that I raised on Talk:Interwiki map affects more than just the Foundation. Did you know that every time a Wiki developer sets up a new wiki he automatically gets an Interwiki table from the Foundation? In sum, what you do here affects other Wiki webmasters, not just those at Wikipedia. I hardly consider it "trolling" to point this out, or to suggest, ever so gently, that you ought to be consistent in the enforcement of your own rules.--Temlakos 16:05, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

We manage our Spam blacklist and Interwiki map based on the needs of the Foundation. We take no responsibility for others' use; they are free to accept, reject or modify this stuff as they see fit. --A. B. (talk) 16:16, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry, it sounds quite like a stupid question but I'm not sure what I can call it in other words. I've checked SWMT and saw this link, but I don't find this one to be so useful. --Kanonkas 18:36, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Much of what I do cross wiki relates to link removal & that is not something I would recommend to anyone! If it does interest you then firstly take a look at the wp project first to gain experience in this field.
If you want to deal with cross wiki vandalism then you really need to be on the irc channel for the SWMT. To get more info feel free to post on the talk page of the project for more info. Personally I would suggest that to gain some experience you take a language you are fully happy with & then go and look at some of the smaller projects in that language & their RCs. Project such as books, quote, wiktionary in other languages are often not that well patrolled. Hope this helps - thanks --Herby talk thyme 11:14, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The above should work (well, it works on my page at least). -- Avi 15:25, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
(ec) Not that fluent in en :) Actually it does not seem to have made a difference sadly. Pathos changed the babel stuff a while back & some people were not as keen on the new style. Regards --Herby talk thyme 15:26, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh well, we know you can speak English rather goodly, so no matter :-) -- Avi 15:27, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oversight?

You thinking of running Herby? It'd be a shame if you didn't... —Giggy 06:02, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah - nothing better than a good bloodbath :) (& the page header is another good reason!) --Herby talk thyme 07:15, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Grrr. Maybe if I get a few others to beg? —Giggy 07:17, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Strictly between the two of us (!:)) I was asked a little while ago! The answer is still no. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:20, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Page deletion

Can you revert my Sandbox page so I can copy the data? I accidently left it alone on that site when I converged user pages and its nowhere else; after I get it it can be re-deleted. Thanks Theornamentalist 16:50, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I guess it was a borderline deletion - had you logged in to edit I would not have deleted it! Undeleted for now. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:08, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

re: Hum

Hi Herby, I had the problem yesterday, MaxSem suggested to log out and log in again, that did it for me, can You please try? Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 09:59, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

ventimiglia.biz

Hi, I see you added ventimiglia.biz, but haven't reverted the links yet. Could you therefore remove links to User:COIBot/XWiki/cultura.ventimiglia.biz if needed as well? Some of 'm have been added to the same pages. Thanks, Erwin(85) 10:27, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Gone now I think. Didn't spot the other report. --Herby talk thyme 10:39, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Damn

Beat me to deleting this one... only because I did a typo on the template and was going back to fix it. I'm thinking it might need a salt. —Giggy 11:54, 3 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Or - the way I did it?
As to being beaten - it happened to me a lot before I was an admin.... :) (actually still happens now if Comets/birdy are around!) --Herby talk thyme 12:10, 3 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Reports

Thanks for closing them. Forgot about that. --Erwin(85) 20:57, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I noticed that you're active right now, so could you have a look at Talk:Spam_blacklist#isfp.co.uk. If you agree I'd like to revert them right away. Thanks. --Erwin(85) 11:52, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

JackPotte

I agree that this guy needs to be blocked cross-wiki. We should perhaps think about requesting that his account be locked. As well I have recommended to those in #wikimedia-admin that he be blocked and his userpage deleted. Views on doing so on Commons and here?  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:42, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I really don't like this one for a number of reasons. Comets initially locked the account because of link placement & got into trouble for it (would have saved a number of us trouble if that lock had stayed!). After we first BL the link, we get a "please de-list" - does he wait for an answer - NO, creates another link site. After that is blacklisted he creates another one. Personally I think there should be cross wiki blocks but I accept that it is just my opinion - I'd like to see some more opinions I think. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 16:01, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

re:Views on account locking?

Hello Herby, I have very strong views about global locking, I think it should only be done in these severe cases where we are using it now. It is for several reasons worse than global blocking. Some obvious: users get no warning they are "b"locked. they cannot contact user who "b"locked them...

I prefer not to lock in this case, but solve it some way different; eg. contacting the user on fr.wikt/wiki where he seems active, if all talks and advices are not helping maybe locking might be the last option, though I would like to see a warning then on the usertalk in this case, so he is aware why that is happening.

Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 18:27, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hm, sorry, I seem to be too tired. I looked at two, and think they can be safely locked, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 18:43, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hm, I should sleep sometimes, they have no sul accounts, also it seems they had stopped now :S --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 18:45, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

BL backlog

Hi Herby. I guess it's a long time since I logged-in to Meta. I've just got your note! Sorry I wasn't around at the time. Is there any maintenance work I can do now that would be useful? -- SiobhanHansa 17:04, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

"SUL spam"

Can we make an effort to list only users who have gone cross-wiki? The page will be bloated otherwise.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 02:47, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yep - problem is we do not know who will go cross wiki. Commons may be the last edit or the first of a long (JackPotte) series? I would suggest that they are speedily removed - not even sure they are worth archiving? --Herby talk thyme 06:42, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Can we please also put the LinkSummary, I am watching userspace now, so this stuff should show up. COIBot should also report that stuff now. If I am to autoreport users as well the bot will have too much to do .. and those really are a problem with en:WP:BLP, userreports have to be used with care, there really has to be abuse from that username .. --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 12:31, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, but until they do go cross-wiki, we don't need them listed, right? Same as for a spammer. If they're only on enwiki and Commons, we don't normally add them - it's not worth it. We deal with things which are already cross-wiki or show some strong indication they will do so.
For the bots, I suggest a rather high bar for reporting if the bots can handle it. (I do note they seem to be running slowly - perhaps due to watching an entire namespace extra?) But yes, I'll begin adding the domain as well.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:02, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I noticed the slow reporting as well .. it indeed has to do more work, and I needed to change some things there. If it gets xwiki it will be going on it, but also COIBot picks up the links (not the users) on the pages, so it will end up in the list in User:COIBot/LinkReports. --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 15:27, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hopefully

A spammer that hit 2 years ago isn't constantly waiting and watching the day that the url is removed. Also notice that 2 days ago local lists weren't as well known and used, so meta was used often when local blacklists were more appropiate. Than you. es:Drini 16:14, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
