25 August 2019 Patiala 15 here

How?
CIS-A2K conducted these meetups as monthly meetings of the user group. Most of the meetings took place at the end of the month. CIS-A2K decided dates and place by having discussion on the village pump and messenger group of Punjabi community members. If most of the community members are busy or they cannot travel to attend meeting than CIS-A2K make it online meeting on Google Hangouts or Google Meet platform with the confirmation from community members.
Impact made:

Learning:

  • More new volunteers or women involvement should be encouraged.
  • Online meetups are good alternative if offline meetups are not possible to organize. So, there should be continuity to conduct online meetups.

COVID-19 StayHomeEditWiki Edit-a-thon edit

What?
CIS-A2K organised COVID-19 StayHomeEdit-a-thon contest with the collaboration of Punjabi Community, to utilise the time of Wikimedians in creating the articles about Corona-virus and to create awareness about the pandemic.

When? & Where?
The edit-a-thon was an online event, it was conducted to create or edit the content on Punjabi Wikipedia from 1 April to 31 May 2020. The main page of edit-a-thon can be seen here.

How?
This edit-a-thon was started during lock-down in India due to Corona-virus pandemic. It was planned by CIS-A2K when there was no edit-a-thon or event type activity in Punjab. 16 people participated in this edit-a-thon and 6 of them were female contributors. The list of 123 articles was provided by CIS-A2K to the participants. The list was also divided into three parts as high priority articles, medium and general. The activity of participants was tracked by using Wikimedia dashboard. At the end of the edit-a-thon, top three contributors were awarded by giving Amazon vouchers.

Impact made:
In this edit-a-thon, 16 Punjabi Wikimedians took part and created 56 new articles about Corona-virus pandemic and helped the Punjabi readers to understand about the pandemic in their native language.

Learning:

  • Articles related to Coronavirus pandemic needs to be updated actively. Once the article is created, it should be updated.
  • The listing of priority-wise articles before the edit-a-thon is much beneficial and well-structured way of doing this kind of work.
  • Wikidata expert editors should participate in these type of edit-a-thons to update content regularly or automatically.

Content Enrichment [SCANNING WORK] [TEMPORARY HEADING] edit

What?
Punjabi Wikisource became live project when there was a little number of books available in the Punjabi language. CIS-A2K conducted a content enrichment program coordinated with Punjabi Wikimedians through scanning the rare books from different libraries and different organizations.
When? & Where?
All the books were scanned and uploaded from July 2019 to July 2020 by collecting them from different parts of Punjab, India.
How?
CIS-A2K uses Scansnap SV600 scanner for scanning and we have found books from local libraries, Bhai Kahn Singh Library of Punjabi University Patiala and by using local contacts. Before the scanning process, we checked out the license of the book and then we did the post-processing after scanning. After editing the book and creating pdf, we have uploaded it on Wikimedia Commons. So after that, we have created the Index page of the book on Punjabi Wikisource.
Impact made:

  • CIS-A2K uploaded 34 books on Punjabi Wikisource and these books contain a total of 7,927 pages. The page contains more details about these books can be seen here

Learning:

  • Due to COVID-19 pandemic in India, no scanning work was done between February 2020 to July 2020. So, in these kinds of situations, public domain books from other websites can be downloaded. And we can upload them on Punjabi Wikisource or Wikimedia Commons.

Content creation on Punjabi Wikipedia edit

This short research study was undertaken with objective of analysing the nature of content produced on Eastern Punjabi Wikipedia which is written in Gurmukhi script. The study primarily sought to understand knowledge gaps in the kind of content that exists on the Wikipedia, from the perspective of Punjabi language contributors and users, as well as challenges for creating new content. The methods for the study comprised of semi-structured interviews with five active members of the Punjabi Wikimedians User Group. The research highlighted several existing challenges for contributors and users, such as the lack of adequate and high quality content about the Punjab region and good online references, and inordinate focus on content translation instead of creating new content. As Stalinjeet Brar notes:

“Most of us are focusing on content translation. But the need is content creation. Even the translated articles related to Punjab are not well-maintained articles and most of them are not updated for a long time. We need to work on this.”

The study also offered some recommendations based on the data collected, such as organising focussed editathons or campaigns and working with various stakeholders like educational instiutions, technology experts etc. to foster content creation through active collaborations.
