Don't work with some files September - October 2023

With some files get "Error querying Media requests API - Not Found" For example 15 October 2023: https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/mediaviews/?project=commons.wikimedia.org&platform=&agent=user&referer=all-referers&range=latest-20&files=Maison_Braun_%26_Cie%2C_Notre_Dame_de_Paris%2C_ca._1930.jpg

and other viewing options, otherwise the recipient won't see the same graph as the sender. for example: https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/pageviews/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&start=2023-05-25&end=2023-08-23&pages=The_Alchemist_(novel)%7CNear_to_the_Wild_Heart Fgnievinski (talk) 01:27, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

Acknowledged. I will try to get this in with the next update, but no promises. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 06:26, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

Switching back from monthly to daily clips current month

When starting off by clicking the page views link on an en-wiki Talk page containing a {{page views}} template, everything looks good in the chart, with daily bars shown through yesterday. Switching date type to monthly view from default daily view, I notice that the second value in the 'dates' field is now populated by the last day of the previous month (currently, 8/31) so the last bar shown is for August (last complete month). When switching back to daily mode, the end-date of 8/31 is retained, and none of the September values are plotted.

Imho, this should show all dates through yesterday, as before.

As a corollary: I don't really see a reason not to retain "today" as end-date for the last bar in a monthly chart, even though that makes the last bar incommensurate with the others. This is not an unusual configuration for a monthly chart with an incomplete final month. Some of the considerations are completeness and transparency, vs. possibly misleading. A possibility might be a to show a projection through month-end, but that could be misleading in a different way.

If displaying a bar for an incomplete month, a contrasting pastel or perhaps a paler color of the same hue (#EEF3F6?) and/or a narrower bar might be a helpful signal of the incomplete month, or perhaps an X-axis label of 'Sep 1-28' or 'thru Sep 28'. @Mathglot Thanks for the recommendations! The "Monthly" date type refers to the granularity option of the Pageviews API. It is only populated when the month is complete, hence the behaviour you're experiencing. However it is possible to get partial month data by using the normal "daily" granularity option, but I hesitate to do that as really Pageviews Analysis is just a wrapper around the API. If you want month-to-date ranges, you can use the "This month" and "Last month" etc. options in the date range popup. I can however change the logic so that switching to "Daily" from "Monthly" will go back to default date range – which will soon be changed to the last 30 days (and not 20). MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:38, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
Given that explanation, I think we don't need "partial month" info. Simply restoring the default date range when switching back from monthly to daily is sufficient. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 21:57, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

Redirect revisited

I use the same example as in the discussion archived earlier this year, where Tiger is the target and Panthera_tigris is the redirect. When toggling "Include redirects", the result for the redirect changes, while the FAQ entry for "Include redirects" states that the count for the target would change.--Rainald62 (talk) 19:11, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

This is a bug. Thanks for reporting this, apologies for missing your last report! I'll get this fixed soon. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:41, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

Non-standard letters in filename causing problems with Mediaviews analysis?

Tracked in Phabricator:
Task T347899

I noticed that Mediaviews analysis for certain files returns just "Error querying Media requests API - Not Found" - for example Morostig - rekonstrukcija prazgodovinskega kolišča.jpg or Debela griža, kot jo vidi zmaj.jpg, while for other files (for example Panorama of Urbino from a kite.jpg) it works fine.

Could the reason be 'č', 'š', and 'ž' letters in the filename? The examples above are all my own uploads, but I've seen other files (with nonstandard letters in the name) showing error while trying to see their Mediaviews analysis.

Or is there some other reason for the error querying Media requests API? ZmajiZmajiZmaji (talk) 18:10, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

I've replied at phab:T347899. I think this is an issue with the actual API and not a bug in Mediaviews Analysis. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:04, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

CSV download doesn't work for some pages

I'm trying to download the CSV file for some pages, but it doesn't work. e.g., Belfast, Brussels, Cardiff, Rome, and Tokyo. For other pages I downloaded the CSV file without any problem. 79.245.159.215 07:58, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Pageviews for a particular racial slur stopped working in April

Starting on 3 April 2023, the pageviews for the English Wikipedia article on a particular racial slur have shown as zero. This does not appear to be the case for other titles beginning with this slur, nor for other slurs. I'm assuming this isn't some misguided attempt at censorship so... What's up with that? -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 23:19, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Interesting. The article disappeared from the tool April 4th. But the tool is still able to find pageviews of redirections. Pyb en résidence (talk) 19:45, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
@Tamzin The term is excluded from data collection due to a malicious attempt to inflate pageview counts on April 4th. We paused the collection on April 4th, and applied the filter on April 5th. ODimitrijevic (WMF) (talk) 20:50, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
What is the rationale for essentially censoring data on this tool? Who decides and where are these decisions announced? What is the process for removing the filter? Beside the fact that these filters/censorship should not exist in the first place, more transparency on this would be helpful. Ita140188 (talk) 12:38, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
@Ita140188: Censorship or filtering? Filtration.
If you really want, unfiltered/unmodified pageview content statistics and pageview for statistics (I checked for 2023-06-15 = 4807 user pageviews).
Unfiltered/unmodified data is on
