This page documents a completed research project.

The Wikipedia.org Portal page has a daily average of over 13 million page views, as of May 1, 2016. However, there is a significant percentage of visitors (about 45%) that leave the page without taking any action. Action is defined as clicking on one of the primary language links, secondary language links, other language links, a search result or clicking on any of the sister (other) wiki project links.

The Discovery Portal team plans to run a very short, one question survey designed to inquire from our visitors on how they landed on the portal page.

Methods

edit

We will use a Qualtrics Survey to display a banner that will be targeted to 1 out of every 500 visitors to the portal. This banner will contain a link to the survey plus links to a specifically written Wikipedia privacy policy as well as the Qualtrics privacy policy.

The question will be: "How did you get to Wikipedia?" The single selection answers will be:

  • It's a bookmark in my browser.
  • I typed 'wikipedia'
  • It's the page that displays when I open up a new browser window
  • Other (with a text box for comments)

The survey will also contain a request for the visitors to chat further with us by providing their name and email address.

Projected Timeline

edit

The timeline for this survey will be very short, maybe a day or two, depending on how rapidly responses flow in. The Discovery team has a limited amount of responses that we can use for the Qualtrics survey and once the survey is live, the amount of responses will be closely monitored.

Results

edit

We ran the survey, accessible by a banner on wikipedia.org, from May 10th to May 17th, 2016.

  • Our method for testing and updating while the survey was ongoing is documented in this ticket in Phabricator
    • see the related (blocked by) tickets for more detailed information for each step of the test
  • Read the results here
