Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Southern Balochi

submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

A committee member provided the following comment:

marked eligible by User:GerardM on 12 August 2008.
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Arguments in favour edit

  • It is time to give Baloch people Opportunity to use open contents in their language. -Mostafadaneshvar 23:33, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Native speakers of Baluchi are willing to contribute to this project in the long-term, hence this project has the potential to flourish like the other Northwestern Iranian language Wikipedia editions such as Gilaki, Mazanderani etc. Therefore the Baluchi language ought to be given the opportunity and priviledge to have its own language edition of Wikipedia. --Jose77 08:03, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Support Yes, After waiting for about 3 years, Now i hope that we can have this great language of our cousins in wikipedia, Another sister in the cool family of northwestern iranian languages, It would be at least a great source of writen materials in this language for my linguistic friends in germany and sweden, In iran however linguistics think about persian, Unfortunately. --Ali 10:30, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Support I am a sysop at the Zazaki Wikipediya. Beluchi is spoken by over 5 million people, so I am confident that they will create a successful Wikipedia. --Maviulke12 06:07, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Support. Balochi is a nothernwest Iranian language. --Asmen 12:16, 16 June 2008 (CET)

  • Support The relations between Eastern, Southern and Western Balochi languages, are very like French, Portuguese and Spanish, which means, while they all use both Arabic and Latin scripts, they're different languages, not only dialects. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:30, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Arguments against edit

  1. Oppose - I suggest there should be a discussion on having a single wiki for all the dialects of Baluchi. A speaker said that there are minimal differences. --Satdeep Gill (talk) 07:17, 24 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Oppose I support single version of Balochi Wikipedia. Samee (talk) 05:11, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Oppose Per Satdeep Gill's argument. We already have lots of similar issues for existing Wikipedia languages related to Iran. For example azb is a dialect of az not another language Amir (talk) 20:51, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Satdeep Gill, Samee, and Ladsgroup: I strongly recommand you to see what I've mentioned at User_talk:Satdeep_Gill#RFL_questions. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:31, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Oppose - Baluchi is a language and our linguists have said many times that it is a language. You have divided Baluchi into three unequal parts and now Baluchi Wikipedia is very slow. And this process is not good at all. Baluchi is a language and if you want to launch Baluchi on wiki and all Baluchi languages from all over the world want to help each other, Baluchi Wiki should be created with the abbreviation {bc} ،, please note that by dividing the Baluchi language It will not be possible to develop it. Thanks Ozeyr (talk) 13:22, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Oppose Per Satdeep Gill's and Ozeyr's argument. I support "Unified" Balochi Wikipedia. ≈ MS Sakib  «TalK» 10:37, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MS Sakib Probably too hard to do so, see I:AN for the reasons. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:56, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Other discussion edit

The language policy allows for only one language code for Baluchi... given that bcc is chosen, do you agree that you want to have a project for Southern Baluchi ? 08:25, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Yes, we agree. First I suggested "bal" code for starting localizing but it is generic code so we decided to work on "bcc".Mostafa 08:48, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was going to comment on that. Maybe it could be labelled as just Baluchi to avoid being restrictive, as a dialect code is basically imposed by a quirk in the ISO code anyway? I'm not familiar enough with the issue to tell whether these are legitimately dialects or languages, though. Circeus 20:20, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is an explicit need to be restrictive in this. GerardM 10:48, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why not create a Wikipedia for the Baluchi language as a whole? As far as I have heard, Ethnologue's classification of Pashto and Baluchi as macrolanguages is erroneous. Is Balochi one language or several? I thought it was the former. Saimdusan (talk) 12:59, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Per [2], currently these language requests are confusing to nearly all langcom members, and still no new emails addressed those. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:48, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
