In OmegaWiki and OmegaT it was described how cooperation can benefit OmegaT and OmegaWiki (old work-name: Ultimate Wiktionary). In the mean time several things have changed. One of them is the scope of OW, it has expanded somewhat. There are now more relevant open source translation tools; important is that Sun Microsystems has opened its translation tool and is actively looking for a community. On the Holland Open in Amsterdam, we got into contact with OSSOS, an organisation that works towards the implementation of Open Source and Open Standards in the Dutch adminsistration. They are working towards making the list of correctly spelled Dutch words freely available. We are discussing with OSSOS and NTG how we can make UW into a lexicological resource that can be used by Open and Free software projects.
Given these developments it changed the way we want to implement the proposed functionality of a translation glossary.
The current thinking is that we need a reference implementation of a translation glossary that uses Ultimate Wiktionary as its back-end. When multiple software projects work on the implementation of this funcionality, there will be some core things that need to be developped once. There will also be things that will be particular to a software application.
What the functionality of this reference application will be is something that will be discussed primaraly in a Google discussion group .. What is discussed here can be read by anyone. When you want to be invited to this mailing list you can drop GerardM or Sabine Cretella a line.
The crux of this translation glossary is that to use it, it is compulsory to have a feedback mechanism from the local glossary to the Ultimate Wiktionary. This feedback mechanism will give UW an ever increasing amount of tranlations. For the translators it is important to realise that they have to be logged into the UW and, that they can build reputation by the quality of their contributions.
