Translation edit

Is translation really necessary for this page (@Verdy p:)? PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:38, 30 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I think this is overkill. LangSelect is more than sufficient. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:24, 20 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
LangSelect does not work we want the top header to be fully translatrd because this sandbox is referenced from the translated doc and users don't want to return back to English. They also need the instructions (before editing) in their own language (even if after subtmitting their changes, they will then see English; but the op header contains localized target links).
Translations are good on this page. People ,ust be confident that they can safely edit this page for their trials, while they were reading the MediaWiki page showing them some examples in their language). And we don't want to force people to create their own sandbox subpage in their user page (they can do it; but most people don't know how to do it or do not want to manage their own sandbox).
LangSwitch and LangSelect will both be deprecated soon in favor of the Translate interface. Lots of work is being done to eliminate them (progressively) as they cause various maintenance and synchronization problems, and they are not user-friendly for non-technical translators.
Also we don't want multiple sandboxes being edited; because they wont be monitored and because only one is being cleared regularly. verdy_p (talk) 19:33, 20 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
It should now work with Template:Autotranslate, so there is no need any more for the translate extension on thsi site. Kind regards, --Brackenheim (talk) 13:02, 5 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

verdy_p, Direct translation of this page is unneeded and unuseful. No links to translations, and nobody ever sees anywhere. Using {{TNT}} in Meta:Sandbox/Please edit below this line is also overkill. There is common way for translate content through Translate Extension and shown it in user interface language (see Meta:Sandbox/Header and this version). Where used Meta:Sandbox/de, as example? If needs to shown translated comment in the edit mode, need to use "editintro" page, where callen some translatable page (as in Meta:Sandbox/Header). Objections? I can delete translations of this page? --Kaganer (talk) 16:44, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Bug edit

@Kaganer: Any idea why {{dynamite|:Meta:Sandbox/Please do not edit this line}} isn't working on this page? Thanks. —MarcoAurelio 10:47, 9 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Marco, my idea: this was bad idea and bad realization. I do not understand why all this was made so difficult (with recursive calls), and I can not fix what I do not understand. In my opinion, this should be very simple: single sandbox page (without unused translatable versions) with autotranslated template, which displays text in the language of the user interface. --Kaganer (talk) 12:40, 12 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Verdy p, please explain your idea for improvement this. --Kaganer (talk) 12:43, 12 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Someone broke it all by renaming the template ("do not edit this line" changed to "edit below this line" and not fixing its code...) verdy_p (talk) 12:59, 12 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Not possible to test via VisualEditor? edit

When saving after some edits in VisualEditor, I got a wrong message called "Empty translation unit for marker "3"." @Jdforrester (WMF): Any Phabricator tasks available for my issue? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:12, 27 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Liuxinyu970226: Yes, it's inappropriate to use the Translate extension on this page (or any page that's not relatively static). When you load the editor on this page, it warns you that it isn't officially supported, and this kind of bug is one of the reasons why. Eventually we'll have to replace the entire Translate extension to make it compatible, I'm afraid. See phab:T67653 and phab:T154500 for some of the issues arising from the incompatibility. Shouldn't be translatable edit

There's really no reason for this page to be translatable. The translation should be done at Meta:Sandbox/Please edit below this line and something like {{autotranslate}} should be used to display the appropriate header in the user's language. The translation subpages aren't even directly editable, so if someone clicks (e.g.) the Spanish translation, they would have to go back to the main (English) version in order to edit the page.

Currently, the "Please edit below this line" comment is the one and only translation unit on this page. However, nobody will ever see a translation of this text unless they look at the translation interface! So what's the point? PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:34, 26 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Return to the project page "Sandbox".
