Grants talk:TPS/Venuslui/London International Conference on Education 2017

Latest comment: 6 years ago by Mjohnson (WMF) in topic Request funded

Hi Venus, glad to hear you have another presentation opportunity. For this grant, I would like to see more in the proposal in terms of outcomes from this conference. Perhaps, getting participants to sign up for the education mailing list, subscribe to the newsletter, join the Facebook group, etc. The workshop Liang and I did in Japan, we had a sign up sheet and got more than 60 participants signed up for email updates. That way we can see if these kinds of opportunities actually lead to more programs or participants. NSaad (WMF) (talk) 17:04, 20 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello Nichole, Thanks for your message. At the moment I cannot access the mailing list to invite the participants to sign up, as I have not registered yet, but I will try to get it done as soon as possible once the grant is confirmed.

Feedback about your request edit

Hi Venuslui ,

It was wonderful to meet you in Stockholm and it makes it much more personal to respond to your TPS request now.  :-)

I believe that Nichole's feedback, above, is intended to prompt you to update your TPS proposal to include additional outcomes. Right now, your proposal says your goals are as follows:

As a result of my presentation, everyone in the audience will become aware the Wikipedia Education program, and will perhaps join the program as well. I will show the audience that the advantages of the Wikipedia Education Program, and perhaps it will make them reconsider prejudices about Wikipedia in general.

Because a request of GBP £ 1070 is at the higher end of TPS requests, I would like to see your goals be further developed to justify the cost to impact potential of this proposal. Think about ways you can set goals that are more concrete than just "becoming aware." Try to come up with outcomes that are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timebound. Think about ways you can expand your forms of outreach during and after the event to maximize the possibility that the connections you make might get involved after the event.

I think Nichole's suggestions are good ones. You might update your proposal with outcomes like:

  • At least 30 people will sign up for the education mailing list by the end of the conference.
  • At least 30 people will join the Facebook group by the end of the conference.

I would also like to see your plan expanded to include post-event follow-up. For example, you might plan to collect email addresses from interested participants and then send follow-up emails checking in with them one week and one month after the event.

In general, we need you to have a more robust participation plan to justify international travel. Please reach out to me or Nichole if you would like help.

Thank you, Venus!

Request funded edit

Dear Venuslui,

Thank you for making these changes to your request. We are happy to fund this request.

As you know as a veteran grantee:

  • You will need to submit a post-event report, due 14 days after the event.
  • The report requires you to link to an outcome. An outcome must be something that is created during or after the event because of your participation. The purpose is to extend the value of your participation beyond the conference. Fulfilling the outcome requirement tends to be the most challenging task for TPS recipients, because some applicants mistakenly assume they can submit the materials they presented at the event (such as a slide deck, a research paper or a poster) to meet the outcome requirement. We do like you to link to your presentation materials, but they do not meet the outcome requirement. For example, your outcome could be something new that was co-created by you and your fellow participants at the event, like one or more articles on Wikipedia improving content about a topic that conference participants know about. Your outcome could also be a blog post you write after the event to share your conference learnings with others who did not attend the conference. You may also write a learning pattern to teach others something you've learned at the event. If you are not sure how to meet the outcome requirement, we recommend that you reach out to us with questions. Please consider in advance how you would meet the requirement.

Our Grants Administrator will be in touch with you about your grant. Thank you for work on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Warm regards,
