Grants talk:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Wikidata Labelling Working Group (ID: 22458313)

Note for the reviewers edit

1. Account renaming edit

After some consideration, I decided to rename myself from MW Song Ngư to my current username - Song Ngư, as I believe that it would be easier to reference to me in some certain instances. Besides that I have already requested for another username changes, but was declined as my work nickname, was literally - my website.

2. Endorsement to the request - as an volunteer edit

Support I'm an local wiki developer, mostly outside of Wikimedia and I understand how hard it is to bring contents of specific subjects to local language. With the expreriences that I got from developing those wiki, it comes to mind that translating those to Vietnamese is something that is gonna take times and efforts. And from these, I believe that this project should benefit Wikidata by filling out the language gap from those data. Thank you and have a good one. Song Ngư (talk) 18:53, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Follow-up Questions from ESEAP Regional Funds Committee and Programme Officer edit

Hello @Alphama

Thank you for your interest in the rapid fund programme.

Your grant application is currently in the eligibility check phase led by the WMF grants administration team. We have also started the proposal review process in parallel.

Would you be able to provide responses to the following questions? Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards, Jacqueline on behalf of the ESEAP Funds Committee

1) Would you be able to share about the current state of Vietnamese Usergroup and how the proposed project will improve community engagement? Beyond a one-time project, would you have further plans on organising regular online or offline activities to spur continued participation within the community? How do you plan to use this activity to kickstart a community of core volunteers?

Currently, our group has 16 members, most of them youngsters. I hope the proposal can attract our members to work together after a long time we have no common activities. With this chance, we can gather our members to discuss our group's future and the activities they prefer to work on. I intend to discuss annual activities such as translations and article writing in Vietnamese projects and recommend future leaders for our group to attend ESEAP conferences and other events.  A l p h a m a  Talk 12:00, 19 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

2) Would you be able to provide a timeline for your activities and more detailed elaboration on what you will be doing at each editing session, where will this take place? What would be your responsibility, what is the expectation of each volunteer (before, during and after the offline activities) vis-a-vis the organiser? Why would this Wikidata labelling project be important for the Vietnamese community? There are considerations that the Wikidata labelling activity is done globally without payment, could you help us understand why providing incentives (as you have proposed - electricity, internet data is critical for the Vietnamese community?

The project will take 2 months, and we will open a space in our group (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_Wikimedians_User_Group) to monitor the project. In each edit, we search for Wikidata items with an interwiki link to a Vietnamese article and then translate the description from English to Vietnamese. We apply cross-check to validate the quality of labels, say each participant will check other 2 participant's contributions. I expect the participants to understand more about how to label Wikidata items and be familiar with Wikida in general. For the project, I will assign the labeling work to every participant and follow up on the project. I believe that many projects can be done without any budget as the way we contribute to Wikimedia projects. However, doing Wikidata labeling is a very dull and repetitive task that nobody wants to do willingly. Therefore, incentives are needed to encourage to work. For years, we have a lot of vandalism in Wikidata for Vietnamese descriptions that nobody fixes them or many of them do not know how to fix.  A l p h a m a  Talk 12:00, 19 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

3) Could you provide a a more detailed scope for the data labelling project? For example, is the focus on geographic, biographies? Flora & Fauna? Vietnamese Lexicographical data? For the proposed budget, how do you decide on the per unit cost of internet, tea and light bites instead of travel for example? Could you provide more details so that we understand your budgeting thought process better and why these are more valued within your local context?

We will label vital articles first and then widen other fields without any limitations. However, we prefer to choose Wikidata items with a Vietnamese interwiki link. Our work only needs computers and mobile devices with Internet connections so it is not PROPER to mention other stuff such as travel. As mentioned in our group discussion, I tried to increase the budget with the cost of the Internet, light bites, and electricity to encourage participants. However, I think revising the budget with evidence is more reasonable. Therefore, I would like to submit the modified budget again here [1].  A l p h a m a  Talk 12:00, 19 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
