Comments from I JethroBT (WMF) edit

Hello Vicstasiuk7, and thanks for your proposal for Wiki-Wednesdays supporting Canadian visual artists. Here are my comments and questions:

  • You've done a great job of organizing a team of partner organizations to help support your activities and planning. Thanks for this initial outreach work for the proposal.
  • In terms of the model for your training activities, the informal gathering model for the Wiki-Tuesday events held by the University of Western Ontario Librarians looks accessible and supportive for individuals with different levels of familiarity with Wikimedia projects.
  • One important concern I have is that there is some disconnect between your goals/learning questions and proposed evaluation plan to address them. Currently, only participation is being measured, and this information will not informative other kinds of goals and needs described in this proposal. Here are some examples of where I am seeing some disconnect, and some suggestions:
    • It would be good to learn more about how art museums can use wiki-editing sessions to improve their outreach to communities and other colleagues. - To address this, you could consider collecting some qualitative feedback from art museums you work with about how they might or will use sessions to support outreach work. For example, in the evaluation section, this might look like:
Main Open Metrics Data
Main Open Metrics Description Target
Feedback from participating art museums After a training session, we will ask staff from art museums to complete a form to let us know how editing sessions might improve their outreach work. Collect feedback from 5 institutions.
  • Many Canadian women visual artists had extensive training in Europe and the United States, this project could emphasize this through the data structure that includes 'artist trained by'. & 33 Female Visual Artists were included in the Uninvited Exhibit. Some of these artists have entries on Wikipedia, but many of them do not have all the data categories mentioned above in wikidata (artist trained by, part of the Collection of X museum, Notable works, curatorial research or essays). These tasks support specific improvements for Wikidata items. I am requesting you specify a goal around these kinds of edits in terms of the number of Wikidata items you hope to create/improve in these (or other) ways. I also want to acknowledge that making these estimates can be challenging, and that we do not expect applicants to make highly accurate predictions when they are starting with a new community with uncertain levels of participation. It's OK to make your best guess right now and adjust it in future requests for funding when you have more information. We don't make funding decisions just because certain goals aren't met (because there are sometimes reasons for that are hard to predict or out of your control). It may be helpful to look at what outcomes the University of Western Ontario Librarians has to help inform your initial estimates, since you are using a similar model of programming.
  • I don't see any specific evaluation plan related to the impact of knowledge graphs, data visualizations, and related documentation. Because a lot of effort and budget is focused on the development of these visualizations, I am requesting you add some potential outcomes that you can evaluate based on what is already in the proposal, such as:
    • We will also help cultural connectors create knowledge graphs - You could evaluate on the number of participants who created knowledge graphs as a result of your training sessions.
    • ...knowledge graphs to demonstrate the importance of linked open data (LOD) and creating online information on your websites that increase audiences and engagement.: You could follow-up with institutions to ask whether they incorporated more linked open data online information on their websites as a result of Wiki-Wednesday sessions.
    • Demonstrate how the visualization could be used in public programming or as a learning tool for educators, volunteers or exhibit staff. You could also follow-up with participants to generally understand how they are using knowledge graphs.
In order to move forward with a funding decision, please address these aspects of your evaluation plan and incorporate relevant metrics into the Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation section.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

We have updated our application based on the feedback above.
We look forward to receiving further feedback or a decision.

Review of team's experience on Wikidata edit

As this grant application specifically mentions Wikidata, I have reviewed the editing history of the team members on that project. The application lists many participants, but only identifies one account name, Vicstasiuk7, which makes it difficult to assess whether the team has the necessary experience and clean record. Vicstasiuk7 appears to be an experienced Wikidata editor with a clean record. Bovlb (talk) 18:34, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
