Comments from I JethroBT (WMF) edit

@Doc James and Soupvector: Thanks very much for your Rapid Fund proposal to support improvements to Health Care Translation Dashboard. I am approving the proposal with the following comments and questions:

  • First, I just want to acknowledge that the translation dashboard and associated leaderboard are great tools to support this kind of translation work in that they readily produce a clear set of tasks and help capture impact of translation work at the individual and language level. It's a good foundation of technical infrastructure and community support with which to build upon and improve as you're setting out to do here.
  • Second, it's helpful to hear about how the improvements in these tools could help support your collaborations with partners such as NIOSH and the WHO.
  • We hope to improve skills in working with programmers. Can you provide more detail about what skills this involves? Is it about, for example, identifying practices in communications and planning that help support collaborative software development work?
  • This is not a significant concern, but there is a bit of a disconnect for me in the proposal. My understanding is that the main activities in the work is to make some discrete technical improvements to these tools and that one of your outcomes is focused on increasing the number of translators, which is usually connected to outreach activity. Is there something inherent about the planned technical work that will attract more translators, or is there other work being done to increase the number of translators who have used the dashboard?

When you're able, please respond to my questions above, but this is not urgent, so you're welcome to take your time. With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 08:38, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks User:I JethroBT (WMF)
We have a number of outreach activities surrounding recruiting translators; however, these are carried out by volunteers and do not have funding requirements attached to them at this point.
For us to add further languages to those we work within we need to have bots working on cleanup and other tasks in these languages.
We are going to be setting up weekly / biweekly meetings between those guiding software development and those doing the actual coding. This is what we meant by improving our abilities to work with software developers.
Let me know if you have further questions. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 01:10, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
