1. .  Support This is a very good proposal. earlier, women centric and diversity editathons were conducted to add articles to Kannada Wikipedia. The current proposal looks like a natural extension of the previous efforts. This could have been done much earlier but for Covid-19. • We want to appreciate your efforts in bridging the gender gap on Wikimedia projects by running translation workshops. We think that the proposal is viable and the activities will support addressing the gender gap in Wikimedia projects, specifically in Kannada Wikipedia. Additionally, we value the plan to recruit new female editors, which would help to achieve the set goals.

Thank you for approving my grant request. By undertaking this project, I wish to contribute towards bridging the gender gap and bring in some new women editor to Kannada Wikipedia. I have answered your queries below.

Additional response to Question 8(a)

Pre activities:

• Contacting each local Institutions to make required arrangements for the training program
• Collecting and scrutinizing the details of the participants
• Making list of women related articles for every event
• Inviting the Resource persons

Activities on the event:

• Coordinating with the local Institutions to make the event successful
• Briefing on Wikimedia and its projects
• Teaching the basics of Kannada Wikipedia editing i.e., search for an existing article, new account creations
• Importance of User page, Sandbox, help page. How to use Kannada keyboard? and help page available for the same
• Text Formatting- bold, italic, lists, links (inter wiki links and external links), adding references
• Using media files from Wikimedia commons and uploading media files to Commons (depends on time availability)
• Usage of content Translation tool- translating from English to Kannada using google and other translation engines
• Paragraph wise translation, handling of missing links, including and modifying references, translation of info-box

Post event activities:

• Review the draft articles and make corrections if needed and make them live
• Keep track on edits of the participants post event
• Check the sustainability ratio
• Guiding and addressing the challenges faced by the participants through emails/phone calls/Telegram groups after the events
• Taking feedback from the participants
• Reporting

Additional response to Question 8(b)

As it is already mentioned, WikiWomen Mangaluru would be the part of this project along with Kannada Wikipedia community, Karavali Wikimedians User Group and other Educational Institutions in Karnataka. They are the volunteers. We will be inviting the paid Resource persons who would be the part of Kannada Wikipedia community to provide training sessions along with me on the event.

Yes. I would be presenting on Gender gap in Wikipedia in the beginning of every event to motivate the participants to make constant contribution to Wikimedia and its projects. I see you plan to make new users edit Wikipedia. Have you considered making them start with some assisted editing? For example OAbot is a tool to quickly edit references. It's educational on multiple fronts (templates, reliable sources, systemic bias, copyright) and can make the participants feel some sense of accomplishment quite quickly.
