Remaining funds request

At the conclusion of the project, Wikipedia Connection had $542.49 left over. We would like to use these funds to continue hosting campus events at Ohio State for the duration of the summer (May 4 - August 22). Since many students are off-campus during the summer, the meetups are less frequent and include remote involvement, which makes the ~$500 amount adequate.

Ohio Wiknic 2016	Food, snacks, drinks, tableware, charcoal, and lighter fluid	$80	1	$80	Alongside many others, we will be hosting a Wiknic in Columbus for the Ohio community. This event will bring together Wikipedians to socialize, discuss, and network with each other. It's also a great opportunity for Wikipedia Connection members to meet other Wikipedians from the surrounding area. We will primarily be making our own food (hot dogs, burgers, and vegetarian options), along with providing water, soda, silverware, plates, and napkins.
Ohio Wiknic 2016	Travel reimbursement	N/A	N/A	$100	We will be providing a total of $100 in travel reimbursements divided between Wiknic participants, to cover both gas and parking costs at Ohio State University. We'll be inviting Wikipedians from all over Ohio; travel reimbursements would encourage Ohioans from 2+ hours away to attend. If the entire $100 is utilized, it will be split fairly based on distance traveled.
Wikipedia Library Session	Food, snacks, drinks, and tableware	$50	1	$50	Alex Stinson and Jake Orlowitz will be hosting a intro session of Wikipedia Library for Columbus-area librarians. We will be providing light refreshments and snacks.
Wiki Education Intro & Training	Food, snacks, drinks, and tableware	$50	1	$50	We are planning to invite the Wiki Education Foundation to Ohio State to lead an intro and training session for the Wiki Education Program to Ohio State faculty. For any interested professors who would like to pursue the Wiki Education Program, Wikipedia Connection will provide support for the professors and students.

Activities and lessons learned

The Great Buckeye Wiknic 2016

The Great Buckeye Wiknic 2016 was one of many Great American Wiknic picnics that occurs annually in cities across the United States. This was the first Wiknic in Ohio in years, and served as a day in the park for food and socializing with others from the Wikimedia movement.

We had a total of 11 attendees, participating in activities that including discussions, board games, sand volleyball, and Pokemon Go. Our event attracted Wikipedia Connection members, non-Wikimedians, and Wikimedians from outside of the university, resulting in a diverse set of individuals interested in the movement. Two of our participants came from out of the state. This event provided a great opportunity for our members to meet experienced Wikimedians from around Ohio and beyond.

Workshops

We hosted two workshops during the summer: one at the beginning, and one at the end.

• Our first workshop resulted in discussions about Wikipedia and future plans for Wikipedia Connection during the summmer.
• Our second workshop took place in August, in which Alex Stinson from the Wikimedia Foundation stopped by for a pre-semester workshop. Alex provided a presentations on both GLAM and Wikidata, two projects we hope to include in next semester's activities. This was also a great opportunity for our members to meet a Wikimedia staff member and learn more about the Foundation and their various projects.

Online activities

With a lot of our members away from campus, we encouraged participation in several National Archives online events, of which a couple of our members participated in:

• #ArchivesJuly4 Transcribe-a-thon, a three-hour event put on by the US National Archives and National Archives Foundation to transcribe documents related to the founding of the United States.
• Proposed Amendments Edit-a-Thon, an edit-a-thon focused on improving Wikipedia entries related to proposed Constitutional amendments.

Lessons learned

What worked well?

Our flagship event for the summer, our Wiknic, was a great success. We had 15 attendees, which included both Ohio State and non-Ohio State students - and a couple people coming from out of state. Separate from the events covered by our funds: Some of our members also remotely participated in a couple online edit-a-thons and NARA events, and also attended the Wikimedia Diversity Conference on behalf of Wikipedia Connection.

What didn't work?

We didn't host as many events as we initially planned (namely the Library session, education program session, and additional workshop). This was due to a combination of our members being busy during the summer, in different locations, and campus being "dead" relative to the rest of the year. Our two workshops that did occur had relatively low participation.

What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?

For a campus summer session, I would put more focus on organizing virtual events, and less on on-campus events. With many of our members off-campus for the summer, virtual events (such as online edit-a-thons) would allow more of our members to participate in Wikipedia-related activities during the summer.

Learning patterns

• Endorsed expert involvement; our example:

For our last workshop of the summer, Alex Stinson from the Foundation stopped by to help host our event. He provided our members an introduction to Wikidata, as well as provided a great overview of GLAM. Having experience with both projects, as well as experience doing outreach as both a volunteer and Foundation employee, Alex was able to give a very effective and motivational overview of both projects, better than our own volunteers could. Alex, as an expert from the Foundation, also provided an opportunity for our members to ask questions and gain new insights.

• Endorsed short-distance travel; our example:

Our first Wiknic attracted participants from across Ohio and neighboring states - which involves both short- and medium-distance travel. To encourage both safe and cheap travel, our event page provided suggestions of ways to reach our event, as well as provided details on Columbus' public transporation options and a map of the roads/parking lots around our venue. Making travel as easy, cheap, and safe for our participants is important!

With the Summer session being a big slower than normal, our goals for the summer were:

• Community: Keep Wikipedia Connection members engaged with one another.
• Content: Encourage participation in opportunities to contribute to Wikimedia and other projects.

Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.

Partially - we fulfilled our goal of community, though lacked a bit when it came to building content.

• For community, we kept our members engaged through a Wiknic, a couple workshops, and online events. The Wiknic was particularly notable in accomplishing this goal, bringing our members together with non-campus Wikimedians.
• For content, we ended up hosting fewer workshops then expected, and our offline events fostered a small amount of content contribution. Our members did participate in a couple online events, which resulted in some more content creation. However, our content contributions were fewer than hoped for, and a lot less when compared to our previous semester. This was largely due to a combination of our members being busy during the summer, in different locations, and campus being "dead" relative to the rest of the year. We expect our content contributions to rise again in the coming semester.
