Project summary edit

COORDINATE ME 2024 is a dynamic international Wikidata competition focusing on enriching geospatial content, ranging from villages and hospitals to public art and natural monuments. The primary objective of this competition is to enhance or create Wikidata items with a coordinate location (P625) property across all designated focus countries. Participants are encouraged to engage in the competition directly or explore the diverse array of tools and resources provided. This initiative serves as a catalyst for global collaboration and knowledge enrichment within the Wikidata community. By fostering engagement and providing accessible resources, COORDINATE ME 2024 aims to empower contributors of all levels to contribute to the enhancement of Wikidata's geospatial content.

Project Plan edit

Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

As part of the COORDINATE ME 2024 project, we will be hosting one training session and one editathon to engage participants and enhance Wikidata content. The training session aims to equip both new and existing editors with the skills needed to add and improve Wikidata items, focusing on the enhancement of geospatial content. Participants will learn about best practices, tools, and resources for contributing to Wikidata effectively. Following the training session, the editathon will provide a practical and hands-on opportunity for participants to apply what they have learned. During the editathon, participants will work collaboratively to edit and create Wikidata items related to geospatial features such as villages, hospitals, public art, and natural monuments. This interactive session will allow participants to deepen their understanding of Wikidata editing while actively contributing to the COORDINATE ME 2024 project goals.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.

I have posted a notification on the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria talk page. Here is the link:
Talk:Wikimedia User Group Nigeria#Coordinate Me 2024

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
Participants will be notified about the program through the University of Nigeria Wikimedia community forum, WhatsApp messenger and physical meetings/invitations and group invitations to different departments within the University of Nigeria, Nsukka community.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

Yes, I do have experienced Wikimedians to help facilitate the event alongside my humble self User:Baruch Omale. They include among others; User:Ngozi osadebe User:Ugoji.john User:Bidemi Bernice

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

The major equipment needed for this project are; laptop computers, wifi routers, power source and projectors. We intend hiring these items from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka ICT centre during the physical event. Most of the participants have personal computers to continue working with after the training days. As regarding skills, the community is endowed with an array of experienced editors who can easily carry the new editors along.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Follow-up sessions will be held online via WhatsApp where we will have continuous engagements to provide assistance to participants and also to share vital help tips.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

I want to highlight the project's innovative approach to enhancing geospatial content on Wikidata and its potential to inspire collaboration among contributors from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, I'd like to emphasize the project's potential for fostering collaboration and innovation within the Wikimedia community and create more awareness for the Wikidata project.

Thank you for considering the proposal.
