I have been working on PIDs (permanent identifiers) in Wikidata and sister projects for several years. I'm also pro-bono Wikipedian in Residence with ORCID, a major PID provider. I have been invited to talk about my work in this field, including my experience of liaising with external bodies that mint or use PIDs (including Quora, the BBC, UK Parliament, Songkick, DBLP), at PIDapalooza - the leading annual, international PID event, which representatives of many such bodies will be attending.
Goal and expected impact edit
My aim is to spread awareness of Wikidata and especially its use of PIDs, to potential partner organisations; to develop working relationships with them, to encourage them to make use of Wikidata IDs as PIDs, and not least to understand the issues they face which we can address. I will then share the latter with the Wikidata, Wikipedia, Wikispecies and Wikimedia Commons communities through my regular participation in them, in order that we can collaboratively develop solutions.
Quantitatively, I will aim to:
- attract an audience of at least 30 to my talk
- identify at least two new identifier properties for Wikidata and submit and steward proposals for their creation
- solicit at least one set of identifiers as a bulk data donation to Wikidata; and facilitate the upload of that donation
Subsequent to the event I will conduct outreach by:
- including my contact details (Wikimedia user name, Twitter account) in my presentation, and inviting anyone attending who requires assistance with Wikidata to contact me
- supporting at least two organisations represented at the event to become contributors to Wikidata
- including findings from the event in at least three public presentations at Wikimedia events; or at outside events where I speak about Wikimedia projects as an outreach activity, in the following year
Budget breakdown edit
- Ground travel, UK (home to airport (taxi during antisocial hours); return (public transport)): GBP £25
- Ground travel, Spain (airport to venue; return): Euro 45
- Accommodation: Euro 86 per night x 3 nights = Euro 258 (plus local taxes?)
- Subsistence: USD 57 (standard rate less 20% as breakfast provided at hotel) per day x 3 days = USD 171
Total (GBP 25 + Eur 303 + USD 171) = approx GBP 426

Payment will be claimed in GBP. This may be over a month after the event, once bank statements showing conversion rates/ charges are received.

- Andy is the most knowledgeable person I know about identifiers on Wikidata. One of the central oportunities on Wikidata is to act as a central hub to link knowledge together from different databases. To do this it is essential to build working relationships with other organisations working with permanent IDs and also gain knowledge from them to address for future challenges and opportunities on Wikidata. - I know how valuable Andy's work is. I met him 3 times (in London, Tunisia and Montreal) and always attended his sessions. Support Being at this conference is very valuable as identifiers are a crucial part of Wikidata. - Support I have met Andy at WikiCite 2017 and was full of ideas especially about identifiers. His engagement to work on these ideas went on long after the conference. - Support I endorse this Andy was previously brought to Australia & Indonesia by WMAU and WMID to specifically share his WikiData and personal ID knowledge (see: https://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Wikidata_Tour_Down_Under ) his knowledge and skills as presenter create relationships with external organisations the whole community will benefit from this. - This is Andy's video that we make in Wikimedia Indonesia during his visit to Jakarta. He showed that wikidata and OSM data will have to be linked manually and can not be done automatically because of non technical issue and suggest both community contribute. Safe trip Andy!
