Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Given our achievements, the project goals were met. We hosted a 1-day training and 1-day Edit-a-thon. The two-day event featured a hybrid of 25 newbies and 5 experienced editors. We created 1 new article, added 28 reliable sources on articles, improved 43 articles and added 3400 words to english Wikipedia. The event was colourful with the presence of experienced Wikimedians namely Kayusyussuf,Kaizenify, and Zend2020 who meaningfully assisted in engaging the participants during the program. The first day till mid-day were used in equipping the participants with wikimedia knowledge and skills. The rest of the first day were focused on basic editing such as adding wikilinks and correcting grammatical errors. The second day was also a hybrid of equipping with knowledge and improving articles with particular focus on adding citations, information to lead sections and infobox. This was done with the guidance of both the organizers/facilitators and experienced Wikimedians in attendance. Participants substantially improved the readability and visibility of Wikipedia articles related to the theme of the campaign. They are now aware of wikimedia projects and how to contribute to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. In addition, we have built a new community, which we are currently working to engage always and sustain in the long run.

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Not withstanding the shortcomings, we were able to reach out a substantial number of environmental activists resident in Lagos within the short timeframe. What is even more remarkable is the fact that the change of event date did not discourage a large number of them from attending the program. Additionally, we had the presence of Channels TV's Eco Africa who came in to cover the event and interview facilitators as well as participants. Another plus was having a young renowned Nigerian climate change activist, Olumide Idowu attend the two-day event.

  • What did not work so well?

We were not able to live up to the part of training and engaging staff of UN office in Nigeria to contribute to contents related to the campaign's theme "right to a healthy Environment" in relation to Nigeria. This was due to the delay in getting the the grant approved and funds wired. The initial start and end date of the grant was 15th April and 2nd May respectively. Hence, we proposed around 28th-29th April to the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Lagos. But when we couldn't get the funds on time, we were advised by the Wikimedia Foundation rapid grant team to move the date to 15th May (start date) to 15th June, 2021 (end date). So when we communicated this new date to the UN office, it couldn't fit into their schedule in addition to a new directive from the federal government of Nigeria to embark on another lock down within the new grant timeframe. Hence, the UN office were exercising caution and complying with the directive. Also, we reached out to environment focused Organizations domiciled in Lagos for possible partnerships but the possibility of securing one was hindered by the delay in funds. Even when we finally got the funds, the time was too short for such organizations to work with us.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Events that necessitate partnerships with organizations not affiliated with the wikimedia movement requires adequate time for planning on the part of such organizations and adherence to project timeframe on the part of the grantee. We hope to do better next time.
