Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

Through collaborations among community members, affiliated communities, and partnerships, our proposed activities for the 2023-2024 fiscal year and strategies were implemented as follows.

GLAM Projects

Audiovisual project at Rivers state
A short oral history of Tai dialect in Ogoni language by a native speaker

In this fiscal year, we sustained our audiovisual recordings of oral history projects, and a total of 53 high-quality audiovisuals were created. This year, we visited Rivers State, Nigeria, to document the rich culture of the Igbo tribes in Nigeria. These materials are being uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and the Internet Archive and donated to academic institutions and the National Library of Nigeria. They would also be used to illustrate relevant articles in various languages on Wikipedia. We also organized an online and in-person symposium to talk about the role of oral history in knowledge sharing.

Micro-Support Grant

Wikiclimate at the University of Ibadan funded by Wikimedia UG Nigeria via microgrant

We continued to provide support for our members through micro-grant support. This time, we hired a long-time volunteer member of the grant review committee to manage the program fully. From March 2023 to April 2024, we received a total of 232 grant applications, with 92 of these applications being funded. Rejected applications comprised those that were incomplete, duplicates, lacked clear outcomes, or had budgets that did not align with proposed impacts.

Wiki Loves and other Contests

WLA 23 outreach at Badagry: Group photo after upload-a-thon

Our Wiki Loves and other contests were implemented in collaboration with several affiliate communities in Nigeria, such as the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, Hausa Wikimedians User Group, and Igbo Wikimedians User Group. They were also implemented in partnership with individual photographers and associations such as the Lagos State Professional Photographers Association of Nigeria and Retna. We also funded remote activities through our micro-grants programmes to enable the wider participation of our community members. We recorded the highest number of contributions from Africa in Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Africa, and Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos.

Capacity building

We organised several capacity-building initiatives to build capacity for new and existing members of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. Trainings were organised in person and virtually. We also continued our train-the-trainers initiative, and this year we organised the event in Gombe State, located in the north-east of Nigeria. The event resulted in the establishment of the Wikimedia UG Nigeria Gombe Network to serve Gombe State and the North-East region. We also organised the WikiBoost projects to recruit new editors and build capacity for them to contribute to Wikimedia projects. We also organised the Wiki-in-School project, in which academic staff of universities in Nigeria were trained for three days to enable them to adopt students in their various schools for training and mentorship to contribute to Wikimedia projects.

Gender-gap

Bridging the gender gap in contributions and contributors continues to be a priority for our groups. This year, through partnerships, we implemented the Wiki-Gap projects. We partnered with the Swedish Embassy and the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) to implement the project. It was a three-day event, and more than 100 women journalists participated in the programs. The program closed with a content writing contest to enable the trained women journalists to write their first articles and to increase the number of articles about women on Wikipedia. A total of 537 new articles were created across 5 languages on Wikipedia, including English, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Tyap.

Advocacy

In the fiscal year 2024-2025, our focus is on prioritizing advocacy efforts. To spearhead this initiative, we have established an advocacy working group consisting of experts, including lawyers and community members. The objective is to streamline Wikimedia-related advocacy work in Nigeria, ensuring a cohesive approach. This working group will comprise the leader of all established Wikimedia User groups in Nigeria. We aim to unveil the members of the Working Group on May 1, 2024. To prepare for this, we have conducted a series of meetings with volunteer members of the working group and the Wikimedia Foundation Advocacy team. Our detailed work plan for advocacy will also be published in May, outlining our strategies and objectives moving forward.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

  1. Joint implementation of Wiki Loves X projects: This approach resulted in a significant increase in contributions from our community across various initiatives such as Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Africa, and Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos. Not only did it boost participation and contributions, but it also fostered unity and collaboration among existing Wikimedia user groups in Nigeria. We leverage on our collective efforts to amplify our impact and strengthen our community engagement.
  2. Staff support for micro-grants: This fiscal year, providing staff support for the micro-grant program was instrumental in enhancing its effectiveness. We hired an experienced member of the grant review committee to manage the resources and oversee the program to addressed previous challenges related to tracking applications, following up with applicants, reviewing reports, and coordinating volunteer members. As a result, we saw a significant improvement in the management of the micro-grant program, reflected in the successful funding of 92 applications out of 232 received. This streamlined approach facilitated smoother operations and ensured that deserving projects received the necessary support, thereby maximizing the impact of the micro-grant program.
  3. Recognition award: The introduction of the Wikimedia UG Nigeria Merit Award was highly effective in achieving our goals of community-building and promoting the participation of community members in our programs and activities. This initiative served as a meaningful way to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of our community members, who often engage in thankless work to promote free access to quality content from Nigeria. We recognized their efforts through the merit award, to incentivized continued participation as well as reinforced a culture of appreciation and recognition within our community, and promote a more vibrant and engaged community ecosystem.
  4. Learning and evaluation: This year, we hired staff to document our learning and evaluate our programs and activities. This helps us to identify trends and patterns that indicate success, understand challenges, and optimize our resource allocation. It also enables us to gain valuable perspectives on the effectiveness of our strategies and approaches. This promotes greater stakeholder engagement and buy-in, enhancing the sustainability and impact of our initiatives.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

Our projects have new innovations. A few of these innovations are discussed below;

  1. Joint implementation of Wiki Loves X projects: This year, we adopted a strategic approach to increase contributions and participation in our Wiki Loves X projects. This was very effective in achieving our goals, and we recorded the highest number of contributions from Africa in Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Africa, and Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos. It also helped to promote unity and collaboration among existing Wikimedia user groups in Nigeria.
  2. Staff support for micro-grants: This fiscal year, our micro-grant programme was effective as we hired an experienced member of the grant review committee as staff to manage the resources and oversee the micro-grant ograms. In the past, tracking applications, following up with applicants, reviewing reporting, and coordinating the volunteer members of the grant review committee were very challenging for our limited number of staff. This staff support was very effective, as we were able to fund 92 applications in this fiscal year from the 232 applications received from volunteers across the country.
  3. Recognition award: This fiscal year, we started the Wikimedia UG Nigeria Merit Award to recognise the contributions of members of our community. It was largely effective in achieving our goals of community-building and promoting the participation of community members in our programmes and activities. The award is one of our ways of appreciating community members for the thankless work they are doing to promote free access to quality contents from Nigeria.
  4. Membership registration:In previous years, our organization lacked a robust mechanism for tracking membership and evaluating the growth of our community in terms of its membership base. Recognizing the importance of having comprehensive data to understand the dynamics of our community, we have implemented a structured membership process.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

  1. Participation of fan clubs and networks: Each month, we publish snippets outlining our proposed activities with these communities and invite them to participate. For significant events or projects, we offer funding for the community to organize the events remotely. They engage as both organizers and contributors.
  2. Participation of Other Wikimedia User Groups: We often invite other Wikimedia user groups to collaborate on our projects. We have now jointly organised Wiki Loves X projects with the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, Hausa Wikimedians User Group, Igbo Wikimedians User Group, and Tyap Wikimedians User Group. These affiliates participate in our programmes as partners and collaborators. Invitations are often sent to them through emails and the WhatsApp group for Wikimedia affiliates in Nigeria.
  3. Participation of Non-Wikimedia Communities Non-Wikimedia community often participate in our programs as both content partners and as network partners. These non-wikimedia communities include government, their representatives, and other mission-aligned organizations in Nigeria.

We also use Wikimedia Diff and social media platforms to communicate our programmes to our community and the global Wikimedia community.

5. Documentation of your impact. Please use the two spaces below to share files and links that help tell your story and impact. This can be documentation that shows your results through testimonies, videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, etc.) social media posts, dashboards, etc.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

In our proposal, we highlighted our learning priority to answer the following questions.

What Wikimedia projects interest participants the most?
  • findings indicate a discrepancy in activity levels, with participants demonstrating greater involvement in Wikipedia-related activities compared to projects such as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
What training strategy yielded the best results?
The following training strategy yielded the best results
  • In-person training offers participants the opportunity for hands-on learning, and physical interaction with experienced editors. This strategy helps participants to better learn.
  • Provision of self-pace online training materials prior to actual training was effective for participants as it allows them to learn at their own pace.
  • Mentorship: Following every training, we provide mentorship for the participants, and has been very useful in onboarding new volunteers
  • We have a feedback and evaluation mechanisms for learning about the effectiveness of our training programs and this has helped us to understand some of the gaps we need to bridge.
What is the best strategy to engage volunteers?
Our findings show that the following are the best strategy to engage volunteers
  • Mentoring them after trainings
  • assignment of task for volunteers
  • Use of leader board for their contributions and rewarding top contributors
What is the best approach and strategy to retaining volunteers?
  • This is similar to the approaches to engage volunteers

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

There are a few unexpected or surprising things that happened during the implementation of some of our projects.
  1. Inflation: This has a profound impact on our activities as the market prices of items had double by the middle of the year. This resulted in serious budget constraint.
  2. Files upload on Wikimedia Commons: It was particularly challenging for us to upload our audiovisuals of oral history because the Video2Commons tool for uploading videos to Commons was down for months. We now have to manually upload the videos to Commons by first converting them to the acceptable format.
  3. Technical difficulties: Though expected but still believe it should be highlighted. We experienced a few technical difficulties, including numerous participants getting affected by the global IP block.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Based on the learning priorities highlighted in our proposal, we aim to leverage this knowledge to inform and enhance our future activities and goals within the Wikimedia movement. Here's how we plan to use this learning:

New Priorities

We intend to prioritize understanding and addressing the noted discrepancy in activity levels across different Wikimedia projects. This involves exploring ways to increase engagement in projects such as Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons to create a more balanced participation landscape.

Ideas for Activities

Building on the success of our training strategies, we aim to develop more specialized and targeted training modules to cater to the diverse interests and needs of participants. For example, we may develop editing workshops tailored to participants interested in contributing to Wikidata or Commons. We plan to expand our mentorship program to provide ongoing support and guidance to volunteers beyond initial training sessions.

Goals for the Future

Our overarching goal is to foster a more inclusive and diverse community of volunteers actively contributing to various Wikimedia projects. We aim to increase participation rates in projects beyond Wikipedia by implementing effective engagement and retention strategies. We aspire to create a supportive and rewarding environment for volunteers, where their contributions are valued and recognized. This involves implementing feedback mechanisms, recognition initiatives to motivate volunteers

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

One inspiring thing about our activities in this round of funding is the micro-grant program. It’s thrilling to learn about its impact and how it has served as a model for other Wikimedia communities that are awarding grants to their members. It has also helped minimize the amount of grant requests to WMF from Nigeria. We are all proud of this program, and we are keen on sustaining it.

This program is important to us and the Wikimedia community in Nigeria as it has promoted equity, inclusion, and diversity in line with the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030. The maximum limit that an applicant can receive per request has now been increased.

12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work. For instance, guides, training material, presentations, work processes, or any other material the team has created to document and transfer knowledge about your work and can be useful for others. Please share any specific resources that you are creating, adapting/contextualizing in ways that are unique to your context (i.e. training material).

20. Please share your learning about strategies to build partnerships with other institutions and groups and any other learning about working with partners?

We realised that many organisations want to associate with the Wikimedia brand, but they don't know the long-term impact of a partnership with our organization. Some partners just want to partner with us to promote their businesses, while others don't just see a need to do so because the lasting impact of such a partnership is not clear. But most mission-aligned organisations that focus on advancing free knowledge are keen on partnering with us. Our strategy includes showing them examples of organisations that have partnered with us and their impact.

Part 5: Sense of belonging and collaboration edit

21. What would it mean for your organization to feel a sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement?

We would feel a sense of belonging if the following conditions are satisfied

29. How does your organization currently share mutual learning with other grantees?

There is a joint learning session organized by the program officer, Veronica Thaimani. This session provides opportunity for us to share our learning with other grantees and we also provides feedbacks on other grantees programs as well. These sessions provide a platform for sharing our experiences, best practices, challenges, and lessons learned. We also use Wikimedia platforms such as mailing lists, Wikimedia Diff, and social media groups to engage with other grantees and share updates, resources, and insights related to project implementation. We collaborate with other grantees (user groups in Nigeria) on joint projects or initiatives, which allows for the exchange of knowledge and expertise while working towards common goals. We also document project experiences on Meta-Wiki.
