Part 1 Understanding your work edit

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

We hosted 1 offline campaign and 2 editathons and had new editors. The members of the polytechnic community received the programme with a warm welcome being the first of its kind to hold within the region. One of the most interesting aspect is the enquiries placed by the both the lecturers and students on Wikipedia objectives in general. Hence, our team of facilitators swung into action and were very helpful in providing them with answers to their questions, guiding, and monitoring them through the editing process in the sessions. For the new editors it took longer than we expected for them to learn the basic skills for creating new articles, and uploading of images on Commons, we also helped them in improving existing Wikidata Items which they perform excellently well.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

The awareness campaign already started before the scheduled event dates through google form and whatapps group which resulted to an impressive turn up of participants for the training. Equally we also sent emails and text messages to keep everyone informed. We ensured that most of the participants created their accounts and reached the venue on time before the commencement of the training programme.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

The awareness campaign already started before the scheduled event dates through google form and whatapps group which resulted to an impressive turn up of participants for the training. Equally we also sent emails and text messages to keep everyone informed.

Part 2: Your main learning edit

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

We are really excited that the set learning objectives were achieved, targets meet and the project was a success.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

The ICT Laboratory had a limited power supply from the solar power system due to heavy down pour which affected our training schedule. For this reason, we did an overview presentation for new editors which took us too much time discussing and guiding the participants for them to be able to make their first edits due to the fact that Wikipedia programme was new to them.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Although, presently there is hike in Petroleum prices due removal of petroleum subsidy by president Bola Tinubu led-Federal Government which affected the whole economic activities in the country, we would consider using an ICT Laboratory with an alternative sources of constant power supply, avoid spending too much time answering questions by providing the participants with pre-events questions and comments options on google registration form etc.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
