1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

As per the Government of Education, India is home to 1600+ mother tongues. India has about 447 ISO identified languages and is fourth by most number of languages spoken in a country across the world. And we strongly believe that Building content in Smaller Indian languages is paramount to conserve and develop these languages.

Kolami is a Dravidian indigenous language spoken in parts of Telangana and Maharashtra states of India. Kolami is spoken by 44000 people in Telangana, India. This language is one of the most under resourced languages spoken in India, There is no mass media in the language and there was no education in the language until recently. With the introduction of New Education Policy in India, primary education in mother tongue is getting encouraged and it is a good time to prepare Kolami for the same. Government of Telangana has put continuous efforts in building Foundational literacy content for students of this community, the government has produced some books for early school education in recent times. It's high time to build content in Kolami language, this helps the Kolam community with access to the world knowledge.

We are working on building Southeastern Kolami Wikipedia from August 2022. It took about two months for me (User:Nskjnv) to discuss about the importance of free knowledge and building content in local language for the Kolami community. After several meetings Mothiram, a writer by profession from Kolami community started volunteering to build content. Later we have conducted a in person event for Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos campaign from Telugu Wikipedia to bring awareness about Wikimedia and helped them participate in the WPWP(Telugu) local campaign in October 2022. Till date we have 10+ enthusiasts, 4 active editors and about 72 pages in different name spaces are created within a span of 4 months on the Kolami Wikipedia incubator version.
