1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

The main change that the Diversifying Ghana's Linguistics Landscape 2023 aims to bring about is to increase the representation and visibility of Celtic cultures and languages on the Wikimedia projects. The underepresented languages have a rich cultural heritage, but they are often underrepresented in mainstream media and online platforms. This lack of representation will perpetuate misconceptions and stereotypes, and ultimately lead to the marginalization of these cultures.

The workshop aims to address this issue by providing training and resources for Wikimedia contributors interested in creating and improving articles related to underepresented cultures and languages. Through this initiative, the workshop seeks to create a more diverse and inclusive representation of the world's knowledge on Wikimedia projects.

The challenges or problems that the workshop is trying to solve include the lack of awareness and understanding of underrepresented cultures and languages in Ghana, the scarcity of reliable sources in these languages, and the underrepresentation of minor topics on Wikimedia platforms.

The importance of this change has been assessed through various factors, including the social and cultural significance of underrepresented cultures and languages in Ghana, the impact of online representation on the perception and recognition of cultural diversity, and the potential of the Wikimedia projects to promote free knowledge and bridge the knowledge gap.

In conclusion, the Diversifying Ghana's Linguistics Landscape 2023 aims to promote the inclusion and recognition of Ghanaian cultures and languages on the Wikimedia projects and to encourage a more diverse and comprehensive representation of the world's knowledge online.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

This initiative aims to enhance the representation of underrepresented cultures and languages in Ghana on Wikimedia projects. It adopts multiple strategies to achieve its goals, such as capacity building, collaboration, promotion of open access, and community outreach.

Capacity building is an essential component of the initiative that provides training and resources to Wikimedia contributors. It aims to improve the quality and accuracy of content related to underrepresented topics by enhancing the expertise of contributors. This approach will ensure that articles related to minor cultures and languages are well-researched and reflect the true essence of the culture.

Collaboration is another key strategy that promotes teamwork among Wikimedia contributors, cultural institutions, and academic experts. It bridges the gap between academic and online communities and facilitates the sharing of knowledge and resources. Collaborating with cultural institutions will ensure access to previously unexplored resources and comprehensive representation of underrepresented cultures and languages.

The initiative also promotes open access to reliable sources in minor languages in Ghana. This approach is aimed at overcoming language barriers and promoting the recognition of underrepresented languages as sources of knowledge. By promoting open access, the initiative seeks to improve access to information, enabling the creation of well-researched articles.

Lastly, community outreach is another crucial strategy that engages with underrepresented communities and organizations to promote awareness and understanding of the importance of representation of their cultures and languages on Wikimedia projects. Through community outreach, the initiative seeks to create a more inclusive and diverse community of Wikimedia contributors. This approach will ensure that the representation of underrepresented cultures and languages is comprehensive and accurate.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The Diversifying Ghana's Linguistics Landscape 2023 will develop and deliver a range of activities to support its approaches and strategies. These include:

Training sessions: The workshop will organize training sessions to improve the skills of Wikimedia contributors in creating and editing articles related to underrepresented cultures and languages. The training will cover topics such as Wikipedia editing, sourcing, and best practices for creating content related to underrepresented cultures and languages.

Edit-a-thons: Edit-a-thons are events where Wikimedia contributors come together to create and edit articles on a specific theme. The workshop will organize edit-a-thons focused on underrepresented cultures and languages, where participants will collaborate and create content related to underrepresented topics.

Translation initiatives: The workshop will organize translation initiatives to promote the translation of existing articles from English to underrepresented languages, and vice versa. This will improve the availability of content in underrepresented languages and promote their recognition as sources of knowledge.

Partnerships with cultural institutions: The workshop will develop partnerships with cultural institutions, such as museums, libraries, and archives, to promote the use of their collections for creating and improving articles related to underrepresented cultures and languages. These partnerships will also facilitate access to reliable sources in underrepresented languages.

Community engagement: The workshop will engage with the underrepresented communities and organizations to promote awareness and understanding of the importance of representation of their cultures and languages on the Wikimedia projects. This will involve outreach activities, such as talks, workshops, and social media campaigns.

After the activities, the workshop can follow up with participants to provide feedback, evaluate the impact of the activities, and identify opportunities for further engagement.

To reach underrepresented groups, the workshop can take several approaches. For example, the workshop can provide translation support for participants who speak underrepresented languages, offer travel grants or stipends for participants who may face financial barriers, and collaborate with local organizations to identify and recruit participants from underrepresented groups.
