1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

This is a project aimed at promoting the advancement of the Hausa language and culture in Northern Nigeria through the use of Wikipedia. The project seeks to create an online community of Hausa-speaking volunteers who will work together to create and improve Hausa-language Wikipedia articles.

Advancement and revitalization of the Hausa language and culture in the region. This is important for several reasons:

Preserving cultural heritage: Hausa language and culture have a rich history and heritage that needs to be preserved and passed down to future generations.

Promoting literacy: Hausa is the most widely spoken language in Northern Nigeria, and promoting its use and accessibility through Wikipedia can help improve literacy rates in the region.

Empowering the community: By making Hausa language and culture more accessible through Wikimedia, individuals and communities in Northern Nigeria can feel empowered to share their stories, perspectives, and knowledge on a global platform.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Translation and localization: One of the primary strategies is to translate and localize existing Wikipedia resources into Hausa language. This will help make these resources more accessible to Hausa-speaking communities in Northern Nigeria, who may not be proficient in other languages such as English. Localizing these resources can also help ensure that they are culturally relevant and sensitive to Hausa culture.

Capacity building and training: Another key strategy is to provide capacity building and training to Hausa-speaking communities on how to contribute to Wikipedia projects. This can include training on digital literacy skills, how to write and edit Wikipedia articles in Hausa language, and how to use Wikimedia Commons to share media content related to Hausa culture.

Community engagement: Engage with local communities and organizations in Northern Nigeria to raise awareness about the importance of Hausa language and culture and to encourage participation in Wikipedia projects. This can involve organizing events and workshops, partnering with local organizations, and creating online forums for discussion and collaboration.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Content creation: Developing and improving articles on Hausa language, culture, and history on Wikimedia platforms such as Wikipedia, and Wikidata. Creating new multimedia resources such as images, audio, and video content that promote Hausa language and culture.

Capacity building: Providing training and resources to improve digital literacy skills among Hausa-speaking communities in Northern Nigeria. Hosting workshops and training sessions on how to edit and upload content to Wikimedia platforms. Providing resources such as guides and tutorials on how to create and edit Hausa language content on Wikimedia platforms.

Community engagement: Organizing outreach programs and events to promote the use of Wikimedia platforms and the creation of Hausa language content.

Encouraging the participation of Hausa-speaking community members in Wikimedia projects through community engagement and events.
