Purpose of the report

This form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their progress after completing the first 6 months of their grants. The time period covered in this form will be the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). This form includes four sections, addressing global metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.

Wikipedian in Residence

In the first half of the year we were working on the realization plan of the internship program in one of the GLAM institutions, and it was agreed upon that the residence should start in the beginning of July, so the project cannot be evaluated in global metrics at the time it was created.

Wiki Librarian

• Cooperation with 9 cities in Serbia was established (Novi Sad, Niš, Kragujevac, Smederevo, Smederevska Palanka, Vranje, Trgovište, Surdulica, and Bujanovac)

In the second year of the project realization, great progress was noticed. In the first trimester, half the sum of the created bytes that were uploaded in the entire last year was achieved.

The article Miroslav Gospel was chosen as a good article.

Digitization of techno culture

Currently it is impossible to use the global metrics for final reports, as the project is in its early stage (research, collection of materials, material selection, selection of partners - especially a partner that will carry out the digitization).

Wiktionary

Within the Wiktionary project, cooperation with departments of the Faculty of Philology will be continued. In addition to the existing project, Language laboratory will also be a part of the program. Project description and objectives, time frame and measures of success for each of these activities are given below.

Microgrants

Through the program of giving microgrants, Wikimedia Serbia wants to encourage individuals and/or organizations to come up with new ideas and to implement them. Some projects do not require a lot of resources and with the good will of volunteers they can have great results. Quite often, they can grow to become annual projects with a greater amount of activities and participation of volunteers. Public education, decentralization, animating and increasing the participation of community and people who have not participated in activities of Wikimedia are just some of the goals of this program. Looking at the projects from previous years, it has been decided to divide microgrants to:

• standard grants, which will be given to applicants of projects with different goals (projects which include GLAM, Education activities etc. or they have WMRS promotion and public education as goal)
• photo grants which will be given to applicants of photo projects - collecting and uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons along with possibility of editing Wikivoyage.

Wikipedia in schools

Goals

The goal of the program is using different Wikimedia projects as free educational platforms, through diverse project activities. One of the most common ways is writing seminal papers in the form of articles on Wikipedia, which provides both quantity and quality of contributions. Apart from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, as the most developed projects in the academic environment, the goal is to “revive” and develop the less active Wiki projects (e.g. Wikibooks, Wikitionary, Wikiquotes).

Also, the plan was to introduce new tasks for students, so they were given a chance to find a way to achieve the greatest contribution. One of the ideas is to additionally strengthen and support participants, in order to increase retention of a greater number of active editors through this project. Examples for new tasks were: improvement of help pages, work on improving the quality of articles which were created in previous years and a number of offline activities, like work on promotion of Wiki projects and Wikimedia activities. During the previous years, this project has grown to significant proportions. This year, a special emphasis was put on the quality of the participant contributions in the project and the work on sustainability (support from teachers and professors who are involved in the project, work with volunteers and ambassadors who can help in the realization).

As a part of the Wikipedia in schools project, informal training of teachers/professors on how to edit Wikipedia and/or other Wiki projects was implemented. In this way teachers/professors were able to edit alone, but also to train students, monitor and evaluate their work.

Measures of success:

Aside from global metrics, success on the project was measured by the following metrics:

• involving 10 participants on other projects of Wikimedia Serbia or online Wiki projects
• realization of an active Wiki club and/or Wiki sections in Gymnasium (with our support)
• preparation of (at least) 4 professors/high school teachers for independent (or with minimal support) realization of projects in their school in the next semester

Activities

• Project Wiki-student is currently being realized on multiple faculties, including the Faculty of Mathematics, Faculty of Security Studies, Faculty of Agriculture, and others. Several workshops were held in the second semester, where some of the students worked on topics from the subjects from their faculties, whereas some other topics were free. Workshops were held at the faculties, and they were being adjusted to the computer literacy of the students. In places where the students were more familiar with coding, the emphasis was on the project itself, whereas with the students with little or no experience with coding, the emphasis was on the practical training. We slowly started to implement training in the visual editor, but seeing as it is still in development and new functions are constantly being added, the source code is still being used. This year the communication between students, volunteers, and employees has been greatly facilitated by opening a Facebook group. Students asked questions there, and volunteers and ambassadors replied. In that way, more people were able to participate in revisions of the work. Students still have problems with the community for not being open enough to their needs; their articles are being marked with “beginner” template, with no explanation regarding exactly what to correct. The only solution at the moment is to attempt to include the community in working with the students. This semester was more successful in comparison to the previous one, there were more workshops, more articles were written, and good collaboration was realized on several new subjects.
• In the first quarter alone, 22 workshops were held for the students of six University of Belgrade faculties. The ambassadors were actively involved with the realization of the trainings.
• The training for students of geography was organized in UNILIB (University Library of University of Belgrade), since the faculty does not have computer classrooms.
• Over the course of February, the team was joined by three new ambassadors: Jovan Petrović (Faculty of Engineering Sciences of the University of Kragujevac), Ratko Đorđević (Faculty of Agriculture), and Miljan Nikolić (Faculty of Pedagogic Sciences in Vranje, of the University of Niš). The first meeting of the ambassadors was held in March.
• In the beginning of the year, Facebook pages for Wiki-student and Wiki-gymnasium were created after a positive experience with using a Facebook group for the entries in Third and Fifteenth Gymnasium.
• During the first half of the year, Wikimedia Serbia established one more model of cooperation with IT high school - internships students. Students mainly worked on web site, visual identity and graphic design of promo materials. Wikimedia Serbia is satisfied how this collaboration went and will continue this practice in the future as needed.

The situation with high schools whose first semester lasted until January 31st, and the second one started on February 15th, 2016 was somewhat altered, so in the second semester there was less time than usual. From the beginning of the year there were no new trainings, but the following was done:

• The entries on Sociology were completed (Third and Fifteenth Gymnasium). 272 articles were written and completed.
• The sections of Ninth Gymnasium, ITS, and Contemporary Gymnasium have started to work. The articles are being written.

What worked and what did not?

Activities are going according to the plan. There were no big problems with project realization and monitoring the work of pupils and students. The ambassadors were very active. Marko Adam scheduled and realized a part of the exercises for two courses in the Faculty of Mathematics. He also monitored the acivities in the Wiki-student Facebook group with Vukašin Živković, and gave instructions to the students. Vukašin and Ratko Đorđević made an illustrated manual showing how to sign up for the course and use the course page. Ratko initiated the exercise implementation in the trainings at the Faculty of Agriculture. Miljan Simonović joined the librarian workshops in Vranje and suggested the realization of Wiki-gymnasium in the Leskovac Gymnasium, which he used to attend.

The shortage of this period was a lack of evaluational meetings with some of the teachers/professors that made entries in the previous semester. The evaluations were mainly missed because the teachers/professors did not respond or were busy.

In the second quarter, our Education Program Manager went on maternity leave, which led to a decrease in WMRS capacities. Due to the situation at hand, a temporary replacement was brought in, and in the meantime we announced an open call for the new Education Program Manager.

Professional development

Goals

The goal of the seminar for professional development is to prepare the teachers for using Wikipedia in learning and classes. The professional development seminars are a part of the mandatory professor activity, so the impact of this project is far greater than the impact of the unofficial seminars and trainings that are being conducted within the Wikipedia project in schools. The importance of the seminar is manyfold: above all, the professors are being trained to use Wikipedia on their own and gain recommendations and guidelines on how to incorporate them in the teaching process. This way, a direct contact was established with the interested professors who could afterwards be included in the education program. By applying in classes the things they learned during the seminar, the teachers share their experiences with others, and in that capacity it is possible to reach different modes of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects application in classes.

Measures of success:

• Implementation of at least 6 seminars for professional development over the course of the next year (3 per semester) and the training of at least 150 professors/teachers to use Wikipedia in teaching and learning.
• Animating at least 10 new professors to engage in Education program.

Activities

Since the beginning of the year, three professional development seminars have been held. Two were organized in January at the Mathematical Gymnasium, and one in March, at the Economics and Trade School “Paja Marganović” in Pančevo, in collaboration with the subsidiary of the Association of Mathematicians of Serbia in Pančevo. The lecturers at the seminars were: Đorđe Stakić, president of the Academic board of Wikimedia Serbia, and Filip Maljković, president of the Organization, who have been working on the development of free knowledge projects for the past ten years, in an academic environment. The seminars were attented by 66 teachers. Based on the participants’ evaluations, an average score (0-4) is 3.83.

Preparation and realiization of one seminar entails:

• scheduling an appointment in cooperation with the institution where the seminar is being held
• preparation of the work material and confirmation of a realized seminar
• communication with the participants (before the seminar)
• logistic organization of the refreshmets and the like
• realization of the seminar
• creating a report for the Institute for Advancement in Education
• updating the Seminars web page

Documentation for the seminar for the following two years was prepared at the end of last and the beginning of this year and submitted to the Institute for Advancement in Education. Over the course of June we were informed that the seminar Application of Online Wiki Tools as a Didactic Means in Teaching and Learning was accepted and its official page can be found on the Institute’s Website.

What worked and what did not?

Seminars were conducted successfully and we can be satisfied with the outcome. On the other hand, the idea for the discussion and the exchange of the experience of the participants to continue to be conducted over the Seminars Facebook page did not take. The participants were directed towards this page multiple times, both during and after the seminar, but they did not feel comfortable using it. In the future, we should start thinking about a different presentation of this site, so that teachers could perceive it as a useful and simple tool.

Edu Wiki Camp

Goals

Education camps already exist as a developed practice in other chapters (e.g. Armenia), where they proved to be a very successful way of engaging students and pupils. The goal of the Edu Wiki camp is to adapt this concept to our environment and selected target group.

Wiki Edu camp is designed with the idea that a group of students/high school pupils can be further educated and networked, in order to create the base of Edu program ambassadors and/or team of active volunteers. These five days in the nature, filled with online (editing Wikipedia and other Wiki projects) and offline activities (Wiki expedition, team building activities, developing presentation skills etc.), should increase motivation and encourage students interested in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects to engage more actively in the work of Wikimedia Serbia.

Activities

The following activities were conducted since March:

• Over the course of March, a timeframe in which the camp would be realized was defined in cooperation with WMRS ambassadors (the first two weeks of August). Potential locations and accommodations were listed.
• Over the course of April and May, accommodation was booked and the camp timeframe was set.
• At the end of May, application form was devised and an Edu Wiki camp invitation was announced, which lasted until mid-June.
• After the deadline expired, Wikimedia Serbia received 18 applications for participation in the camp, both from Serbia and from the region. Members of the Board and employees performed the ranking and selection of the candidates who were subsequently informed about it.

What worked and what did not?

Organization of the camp went according to plan. The invitation was announced on time, the accommodation was reserved, and the participants’ response was satisfactory.

There was a small problem related to the selection of the accommodation. The idea of the camp was for it to be held in nature, where the participants would be directed at one another. The problem was the fact that the internet connection in such environment is very weak or nonexistent. After a lengthy search, suitable accommodation was found.

Free content

Free content program aims to collect free materials in any kind of form (photo, audio, text material). The benefits of this group of projects are numerous:

• generating a large amount of multimedia content
• animating the community in order to increase their contribution to Wiki projects
• they are suitable for newcomers who are not familiar with Wiki projects yet
• projects are thematically designed and content is useful and important for enrichment of articles on Wikipedia and other Wiki projects

In 2016, 7 projects of this type are being implemented, as follows:

• Wiki Loves Earth
• Zapis - Sacred Tree
• Serbian Holy Mountain in 4 seasons
• Valjevo Mountains Through the Lens
• Wiki Loves Dragonflies
• Kurgans of Serbia
• Competitions on Wikipedia

Within the photo projects, emphasis is placed on the usage of files on Wiki projects.

Wiki Loves Earth

Goals

This is a well-known project with the idea of mass collection of the photos of protected areas in Serbia. Just like before, the contest in gathering photos has been organized and for 20 winning pictures, exhibits will be arranged in Serbia. The contest will have multiple objectives:

• increasing photo content on Wikimedia Commons through submitting photos of natural heritage
• enriching articles on Wikipedia with aforementioned photos
• education of the public and involving the community through organizing edit-a-thons and photo-tours
• promotion of Wikimedia Serbia and its projects through the organization of exhibits throughout Serbia
• establishing cooperation with GLAM institutions

Activities

Organization of the third Wiki Loves Earth photo-contest was initiated in the first quarter. The following activities were conducted:

• Environment Protection Institute of Serbia was contacted in order to prolong the cooperation, consisting of delivering updated list of protected natural resources and providing the members of the jury
• a new domain vikivolizemlju.rs was purchased
• the practicing students worked on the design and programming of the official Wiki Loves Earth website in Serbia
• the necessary pages and templates were created in the beginning of April:

1. Wiki Loves Earth in Serbia 2016 page on Commons
2. Commons category with subcategories
3. template for tagging photos
4. template for the completion of the contest

• competition prizes were designated
• a blog post was created concerning one protected natural heritage (Uvac) for the global Wiki Loves Earth website
• over the course of April, media sponsors were found and a commercial was made, that was aired during the first and the last week of the contest on RTV

Over the course of April the final preparations were made for the contest, along with the media promotion. There was a total of 39 media announcements (television 15.4%, radio 12.8%, press 7.7%, web 64.1%), which influenced the increase in the number of participants, and more than doubled the number of photos submitted from the previous year.

During the contest we were working on animating potential participants, giving advice to the active editors and helping with the correct tagging and uploading the photos. The representatives of the National Tourism Organization of Serbia were contacted during the contest, as well as the organizers of the Nishville festival regarding the organization of exhibitions. NTOS and Nishville were also Wikimedia Serbia’s partners in 2015 within the Wiki Loves Earth project.

After the contest was finished, all the photos were examined, adequately marked, they were assigned IDs, and some of them were disqualified due to the lack of information. Over the course of June the members of the jury were ranking the photos, and the exhibition and the announcement of the winners were scheduled with the representatives of the National Tourism Organization of Serbia. All the winners were contacted over their talk page and e-mail. The exhibition was announced via the standard communication channels - the blog, mailing list, Facebook page, website, etc. It was held on June 22nd, and around 100 people attended the event at the National Tourism Organization of Serbia. The audience was addressed by the president of Wikimedia Serbia, Filip Maljković, the representatives of the Enviroment Protection Institute of Serbia - Dejan Vukićević and Bojana Bojović, and the representative of NTOS, Vesna Raca Radisavljević. The winners were presented with certificates and prizes. The news of the winning photographs was announced on Wikimedia Serbia blog. All the photos from the exhibition can be seen in this category. Ten winning photos were published on Commons.

What worked and what did not?

The organization itself went according to plan. The problem still appears to be uploading and proper tagging of the photos. Participants often contacted us with the following problems:

• overly complicated process of uploading the photos
• difficulties in managing the lists of protected natural heritage and the correct labeling of the templates
• improper categorization
• irregular photo description
• oftentimes the photos did not feature a protected natural heritage

Zapis - Sacred Tree

Goals

This is the continuation of the last year’s project with the objective to photograph and assemble the information on the sacred trees, primarily in Bor and Zaječar district territory. By doing this, the territory of Šumadija and Pomoravlje would be fully explored, together with parts of Podunavlje and Braničevo. The idea of the project is a permanent documentation of all the sacred places of the population from these areas, their customs, beliefs, and other events connected to the Zapisi as a basis for an expert analysis, but also raising awareness of the future generations about a proper preservation and nurture of the oldest national tradition. This project would gather:

• Locations of the sacred trees (descriptive or with coordinates)
• Photographs of the sacred trees, older and current, videos and other documentary material
• History of the creation of the sacred trees
• Information on the rituals connected to the sacred trees (time and manner of maintenance)
• Information on the holders of the ceremony
• Information on the guardian of the sacred trees
• Other information

What worked and what did not?

Everything functioned according to plan. The second quarter was mostly dedicated to the field trips, whereas the photo uploading will be done in the following period.

Serbian Holy Mountain in 4 seasons

Goals

This is a project with a goal to photograph monasteries in the Ovčar-Kablar region which are extremely important to the culture, but are located in a remote area that is unfavorable for everyday photography. The monasteries would be entirely covered with photos by realizing this project, and the articles would be enriched with quality files. In addition to the increase of free content on Wikimedia Commons, the volunteers’ motivation to continue participating in various competitions and follow the activities of Wikimedia Serbia also increases. The project would consist of four parts, with field photography in spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The contribution to the Wikimedia projects is completing and enlarging Wikimedia Commons through professional, quality photographs of certain areas. The ultimate goal is to complete the photos of monasteries in the Ovčar-Kablar region, presented in all four seasons, but also to raise awareness about preservation of these monuments of culture.

Activities

During the first quarter the following activities were conducted:

• at the beginning of the year, special categories were created on Wikimedia Commons in which the photos were uploaded
• records of the visited terrains and assembled photos were made in order to keep better track of the project
• seeing as taking photos in some of the monasteries is not allowed, we had to acquire a blessing and approval from the bishoop of Žiča, Mr Justin, in order to fully complete the project
• going to certain locations multiple times in order to use favorable weather conditions for photography, as well as different motives depending on the stage of the season (early or late spring)
• a tour of a wider area to determine angles for taking photos.

What worked and what did not?

Mild winter and favorable weather conditions enabled taking more photos than planned. Due to the low number of snowy days there were no opportunities to fully portray the winter motifs from the Serbian Holy Mountain.

Favorable weather conditions in the spring period enabled a larger number of photos than planned. However, the photographs lacked the heralds of spring because there were simply none of them in the vicinity of the monasteries.

Valjevo Mountains Through the Lens

Goals

Valjevo mountains make for a special natural-geographic and cultural region in the Dinaric Alps, i.e. Western Serbia, which consists of the Medvednik, Jablanik, Povlen, Maljen, and Suvobor mountain ranges. The basic idea of the project is to create quality multimedia content which would enable further use through other Wiki projects by uploading it to Commons. This content consists of photographs and videos from a given area that display the environment, flora and fauna, mountain architecture, life in the countryside, as well as the cultural-historical region through a portrayal of archaeological localities, monuments, and religious objects. In its nature, the project encompasses forming of the material through several different themes, which make up for an important segment in acquiring new knowledge and education. In accordance with that, the ultimate goal of the idea is to complement and enrich Wikimedia projects with new materials that are not present there, which would enable the creation of new articles that would greatly contribute to the knowledge of the Valjevo mountains and their features.

Activities

Over the course of January we started to sign the contracts and preparatory actions to realize the projects during the winter months. First we made records of the visited terrains and assembled photos in order to better monitor the project.

Over the course of February, seven terrain outings were realized:

• Valjevo - Medvednik (Rebeljska river, Bebića Luka) - a special emphasis was on filming Rebeljska river in the winter, as well as ethnic community Babića Luka, also in the winter. A total of 11 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).
• Valjevo - Medvednik (Sitarice village, Kneževići hamlet, and Rebelj village) - the emphasis was on the north-west slopes of the Medvednik mountain, and a total of 14 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).
• Valjevo - Povlen (Povlenska river) - during this activity, the emphasis was on capturing the winter landscape of the Povlenska river that springs beneath the Middle Povlen. A total of 12 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).
• Valjevo - Povlen - during this activity the emphasis was on capturing the slopes of the Great and Middle Povlen. A total of 18 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).
• Valjevo - Povlen (Mravinci) - Donje Leskovice village - the emhasis was on the Mravinci village, located on the northern slopes of Great Povlen, as well as Donje Leskovice village that is partly located on the northern slopes of Great Povlen. A total of 29 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).
• Valjevo - Maljen (Divčibare) - the emphasis was on capturing the environment of the tourist complex Divčibare, located on the Maljen mountain during winter. A total of 18 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).
• Valjevo - Jablanik (Debelo Drvo) - the emphasis was on capturing the winter landscapes of the Jablanik mountain, on its eastern side in the Debelo Brdo village. A total of 19 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).

A total of 121 photographs were taken over the course of February and they were all uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category.

Over the course of March, five field trips were realized:

• Valjevo - Jablanik (Vujinovača village and Debelo Brdo village) - the emphasis was on capturing the winter landscapes of Vujinovača village, located on the slopes of the Jablanik mountain, as well as the road that leads from Debelo Brdo to Pašna Ravan village. A total of 19 photos were upoloaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).
• Valjevo - Maljen (Divčibare) - the attention was focused on capturing the environment of the touristic center Divčibare, located on the Maljen mountain, with a special emphasis on the Paljevine and Crni Vrh mountaintops that provide the view on the south-eastern and eastern slopes of Maljen. A total of 26 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).
• Valjevo - Povlen (Kneževo Polje) - during this activity the attention was focused on recording the environment beneath Middle and Small Povlen entitled Kneževo Polje. A total of 12 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).
• Valjevo - Povlen (source of river Trešnjica) - Medvednik - a special emphasis during this activity was recording the source of the river Trešnjica that springs beneath Little Povlen. Also, a few photos were made in the Rebelje village during this activity, which is located just beneath the top of the Medvednik mountain. A total of 21 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).
• Valjevo - Balinović village - during this field work the activity was directed towards Balinović village, located beneath the Medvednik mountain. The emphasis was on the village surroundings, as well as the tombstones from the 17th and 18th century at the old village graveyard. A total of 10 photos were uploaded on Commons (in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category).

A total of 88 photos were taken during March, and they were all uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category.

In accordance with the project tasks in the Medvednik (6), Jablanik (4), Povlen (5), Divčibare (3), Vujinovača (2), Donje Leskovice (2), Živan Đurđević (1), and Balinović (4) articles, 30 new photographs were uploaded in the Valjevo Mountains Winter category, and in that way the articles became illustrated.

During the month of April, 5 field trips were organized:

• Valjevo - Povlen (Taor springs) - a special emphasis was on recording the Taor springs that are slowly perishing. 20 recordings were uploaded on Commons (in the category Valjevo Mountain Spring category).
• Valjevo - Medvednik (Rebelj village) - in this field trip, special emphasis is on recording the Rebelj village, Mala Reka, as well as the groves of the copper mine Rebelj that was abandoned in mid-20th century. 10 recordings were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Povlen - in this field trip the emphasis was on recording the environment of Middle Povlen. 30 recordings were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Maljen (Divčibare) - the emphasis was on recording the environment of Divčibare. 15 recordings were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Zarožije - in this activity the emphasis was on filming the panorama of the western slopes of the Povlen and Jablanik mountains that slide toward the valley of the river Drina. 25 recordings were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.

A total of 100 photos were taken during April and they were all uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.

Over the course of May, 5 field tips were realized:

• Valjevo - Povlen - the emphasis was on covering the surroundings of Small Povlen. 21 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Jablanik - the emphasis was on covering the surroundings of Debelo Brdo village. 17 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Medvednik - the emphasis was on covering the other (north-west) side of the Medvednik mountain, i.e. the Medvednik Canvass. 20 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Maljen (Divčibare) - the emphasis was on covering the Divčibare area. 16 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Brezovice - the emphasis was on covering the largest village at the foot of the Povlen mountain, Brezovice. 8 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.

A total of 82 photographs were taken over the course of May and they were all uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.

6 field trips were organized over the course of June:

• Valjevo - Maljen (Divčibare) - the emphasis was on covering the view toward south-east from the Crni vrh mountaintop, and the view toward Tometino Polje. 16 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Jablanik - the emphasis was on covering the area of the Jablanik mountaintop. 15 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Medvednik - the emphasis was on capturing the area and the view of the Medvednik mountain from its slopes in the Vreoci hamlet, Rebelj village. 17 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Medvednik - the emphasis was on covering the Zavojšnica river in the spring. 10 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Povlen - the emphasis was on covering the upper and lower course of the river Povlen. 13 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.
• Valjevo - Povlen - the emphasis was on covering the springtime flora and fauna in the area of Middle Povlen. 12 photos were uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.

A total of 83 photographs were taken in June and they were all uploaded on Commons in the Valjevo Mountains Spring category.

In accordance with the project tasks in the Medvednik (12), Jablanik (6), Povlen (14), Maljen (9), Divčibare (6), Taor (4), Jablanica river (5), Brezovice village (Valjevo) (3), and Tometino Polje (4) articles, 63 new photos were uploaded from the Valjevo Mountains Spring category, and in that way enriched the articles with new graphic content.

What worked and what did not?

Generally speaking, the realization of the entire project went without problems in the first half of the year. Almost all the planned activities in the first period were realized, whereas the tasks and the number of taken photos exceeded our expectations. The only thing that needs to be pointed out is not being able to realize a field trip from Valjevo to Suvobor. The timeframe did not allow it, seeing as the carrier of the project was mainly focused on acquiring as many photos as possible from Medvednik, Jablanik, Povlen, and Maljen, which are more attractive than winter-time Suvobor for photographers. However, seeing as the project is set to last until January 2017, the plan to document the winter-time Suvobor mountain remains, and by pushing it to November and December 2016 all of the planned tasks of this project will have a chance to be fully realized.

Wiki Loves Dragonflies

Goals

Wiki loves dragonflies is a project that aims to create a database that would bring the information about dragonflies in Serbia closer to the general public. This will be achieved through the organization of BOOM (Balkan OdonatOlogical Meeting). BOOM is a unique regional scientific and educational program that is being developed and managed by a group of young researchers and students from the Western Balkan countries with the main objective of establishing a regional research cooperation and protection of dragonflies and freshwater habitats (2011 report, 2013 report, BOOM 2014, BOOM 2015) . The expected result would be a database consisted of photos and articles about dragonflies. The idea is to enrich the existing article or write a new one for each type of dragonflies that lives in this area but to make them more informative and understandable to all ages; primarily students who usually use Wikipedia as a "starting" point of learning, making presentations, writing term papers etc. The new photos would show photos of whole specimens, together with the details which are typical for the identification of every species. There would be a simpler photographic guide that would help in identifying dragonflies. The realization of the main part of the project would take place in August, but there would be uploading of pictures to Wikimedia Commons and writing articles on Wikipedia before and after August. Project Wiki loves dragonflies would, in addition to studying dragonflies, also include photographs of other organisms, landscapes, and cultural assets... In this way, the project participants could take part in the Wiki loves Earth competition.

Activities

In the first half of the year, preparatory activities were carried out. The project was promoted to several organizations of similar activities. In early April, the participants from last year's BOOM assembly were contacted and they were given the adequate material for introduction to Wikipedia:

• Editing Wikipedia presentation
• brochures
• video demonstration of article editing on Wikipedia created with the help of the Edu Project in VIŠER (School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Applied Studies)

There have also been activities on the logistical preparations - providing accommodation, transport, activities and agreement with the owners of natural habitats that will be visited. The plan is that all participants, in addition to photos they will make on the field, bring those photos that they have taken in the past, since these people have been practicing photography for years and are well-informed about this topic.

The main part of the project Wiki loves dragonflies will take place in August, during the BOOM meeting ( August 5-12). Before the meeting, participants will have to upload at least 10 photos to Wikimedia Commons. The training will be repeated at the very beginning of the meeting .

After creating the photo database of dragonflies and other insects, there is a plan to make an exhibition, but it will be more clear after the Boom.

What worked and what did not?

Everything worked according to plan so far.

Kurgans of Serbia

Goals

In 2015 the project “Kurgans of Serbia” was initiated and realized within the Microgrants program. Burrows or mounds (kurgans) represent cultural-historical heritage which are deteriorating at a high speed. This project is in fact a last-minute attempt to document some of them. So far, a burrows catalogue was successfully made, based on which locations are selected and photographed, and conditions are described. It also proved that Wikipedia articles require a lot of improvement in the kurgans-related fields, meaning that the articles in need for improvement are historical, from Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Field activities give valuable support and feedback to those articles, because they yield original photographic material from Serbia, otherwise completely unavailable.

Activities

The project encompasses the Vojvodina region (primarily Bačka and Banat), and the photos are continuously being uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Based on a previously formed list of mounds, locations are being scouted with the help of GPS and their current state is being determined. A few quite successful field activities were realized by mid-summer, during which about half of the locations of Bačka, northern Banat almost entirely, and a great portion of central Banat were covered. It was done point-to-point, determining and documenting the current states with great precision. Over 400km of trip was made during some of the field activities (over 600km in two days in one of the cases). After the trips, the photos were being edited, literature was being seeked, and Wikipedia articles that would have those photos as illustrations were being written.

Increasingly greater practical knowledge in locating and identifying kurgans is being acquired over time, as well as writing articles that would suit the encyclopedia format. A list of literature was made for that purpose which can be found on this link.

What worked and what did not?

There were a few problems within the Kurgans of Serbia project, mostly logistical. We had miscommunications with the project leader, but they were resolved in the beginning of the year. In addition to uploading photos and writing articles, the reports were also late because of other private commitments of the volunteer who was leading the project.

Weather conditions were pretty good. In a few cases, bad weather and mud rendered the paths to the mounds impervious, which were logistically far away from the villages, the roads were impassable, or the car had to be parked and forced to continue on foot. Some field activities had to be postponed because of that, in order not to waste resources and gasoline in vain.

Competitions on Wikipedia

Goals

The primary goal of competitions is to increase free knowledge through creating and improving articles on Wikipedia. Through organizing these activities, motivation and participation of the community also increases. Community participation is not shown only by participating in the competitions, but also in organizing activities, contacting associations, and participating in jury.

Activities

• Wikipedia page for competiton was created.
• List of articles was created on meta.
• Rules for the competition were created on meta.
• CEE Template for articles was created on Serbian Wikipedia.
• The Travel club and Faculty of Geography were contacted in order to share the news about the competition to their members/students, so they can get involved. These institutions are relevant for Wikimedia Serbia because they gather our target group. WMRS doesn’t have feedback if some of these members/students were involved into competition.
• Jury was made of three community members and grading method stayed the same as for the previous competitions - every article was given points from 0 to 2, and those points were multiplied with number of article bytes, which secured the quality and quantity of articles.
• During the competition sitenotice was put on Wikipedia, and weeks were divided per topics, so participants had suggestion what they could write about.
• Comunication with international organizers was maintained.
• It has been agreed that competition will be organized in cooperation with User group in Republic of Srpska. Wikimedia Serbia is giving three awards, while books will be given for the greatest contribution, to the author of the best article and for the best newcomer. Books were provided by Wikimedia Polska.
• Wikimedia Serbia published a blog post about the winners which was shared on web site, mailing list and social networks.
• Winners were contacted and awards were sent until the end of the second quarter.

Comperative results from CEE Spring 2015 and 2016 follows. Growth of number of participants, number of bytes, new and improved articles can be seen.

What worked and what did not?

In 2016, competition had far greater response with regards to the number of participants, number of bytes, and the number of new and improved articles. Achieved outcomes have exceeded expectations. An interesting thing is that last year’s winners are the same as this year’s; these editors participate regularly on our competitions. However, it has caused different opinions among the community. Some members of community are familiar with WMRS projects and activities, but there’s still a lot of those who aren’t. This is the reason why sometimes the same people are getting awards and scholarships (e.g. for Wikimania, Wiki camp). Representatives of WMRS explained to editors online and offline contributions of these participants and clarified why they deserved the rewards.

There was disapproval from the community for participation of Kosovo community on the competition. Wikimedia Serbia remained neutral as far as this problem was concerned. Editors just replaced the flag of Kosovo on Wikipedia page.

Participants had difficulties with topic choice because it wasn’t clear if topics are related to the countries participating in the competition, or countries of Central and Eastern Europe in general.

GLAM

This is a comprehensive project that gives enough space for different forms of cooperation with cultural institutions. For 2016, planned projects are:

• Content donations
• Edit-a-thons
• Cooperation with theaters
• Wiki takes Galleries
• Wiki Librarian
• Wikipedian in Residence
• Digitization of techno culture

Content donations

Goals

The main objective of this GLAM project is to donate photos, video and audio records for Wikimedia Commons. Every cultural institution has a plethora of resources to share. Valuable collections are mainly hidden in the archives and are difficult to reach the eyes of the public. The goal of WMRS is to reach the cultural institutions and establish cooperation in order to donate valuable cultural-historical records.

Activities

After multiple invitations to several cultural institutions to cooperate on this program, Historical Archives of Belgrade has responded to our invitation to collaborate, and started to select the photos, collect metadata, permits, and consent from the director of the Archives.

At the end of March, Historical Archives of Belgrade donated 30 photos to Wikimedia Commons which depict the history of the capital. Photos from the 16th century were among them, but also maps, city plans, blueprints, parish register records, as well as photographs of remarkable individuals, such as the President of The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito with other officials, or Danica Tomić, the first female pilot.

The employees in this institution improved the Serbian Wikipedia article about the Archives by themselves.

What worked and what did not?

Cooperation with the Historical Archives of Belgrade went according to plan. This institution was presented with a Wikimedia Serbia certificate for a special contribution to free content during the WikiLive conference in May.

Edit-a-thons

Goals

Edit-a-thons are events that have multiple target groups. Firstly, it is a great first step towards achieving the long-term cooperation with representatives of GLAM institutions (which are our primary target group). Participants themselves are another target group. Depending on the theme of the edit-a-thon and the institution in which it is organized, participants are usually students, high school pupils or employees of GLAM institutions. In 2015, there were first attempts to combine GLAM events. For instance, photo tours were merged with edit-a-thons, so participants could use their photos in Wikipedia articles. The outcome of these, combined events were higher quality articles and more satisfied participants. In addition to editing Wikipedia, they had time to learn about repository of free files and how they can be used in their future engagement. The atmosphere has always been positive and productive. After each marathon, participants filled out given evaluation forms, through which we could conclude that they are interested in re-organizing workshops or joining similar activities. In addition to obtaining quality content on Wikipedia, edit-a-thons are good ways to attract new volunteers and obtain new partners. Thus, all of the activities will continue throughout the next year. The main objectives of this project are educating GLAM staff and edit-a-thon participants, as well as strengthening cooperation with the institution by overcoming major challenges:

• introduction to CC licenses, and explanation of the terms and conditions
• getting permissions for content release
• edit-a-thons are attended mostly by new editors, so it may be necessary to improve the articles to avoid deletion

Activities

Wikimedia Serbia organized an edit-a-thon in cooperation with World Mime Organisation, Belgrade mimes and Festival of Mime and Monodrama at Singidunum University on March 22, World Mime Day.

There were 17 participants and 15 new and improved articles were writen. Some of these articles were illustrated with 14 photos which were released by World Mime Organisation. Special support came from Wikipedians and Wikimedians from Macedonia. They wrote 9 new articles.

A special guest of the edit-a-thon was the coordinator of United Nations in Serbia, Irene Vojačkova Solorano. She welcomed volunteerism as one of the social activities that United Nations supports. The edit-a-thon had wide media coverage, from announcement of it, through direct reporting from the event, to the report about it. There were 43 media publications.

Workshop on editing Wikipedia preceded this event. This proved to be very useful. Participants were ready for editing articles at the very beginning of the edit-a-thon. Initial cooperation was established with Singidunum University through providing venue for organizing such an event. This University is ready to continue cooperation for other similar event.

What worked and what did not?

Given in mind that occasion for this event was World Mime Day, edit-a-thon was imagined as an international event and therefore other chapters were contacted. They were presented the idea of it so they can too organize local edit-a-thon of this kind.

However, only Wikipedians and Wikimedians from Macedonia organized it. Members of Wikimedia Armenia and Wikimedia Georgia have confirmed their participation, but we didn’t have any other feedback from them. In Bulgaria one article was written in Bulgarian and one in English.

The lack of volunteers is always a problem. In this edit-a-thon only one volunteer participated (online), while other were students of Singidunum University.

Wiki takes theaters

Goals

The cooperation with theaters aims to release content, mainly photos of actors, performances, events before and after performances, archived photos, posters and videos as well as photos of theater buildings (interior and exterior). Organizing edit-a-thons is also planed within this project. These edit-a-thons would be used for creating new and improving existing articles on the most important plays, authors, artists. One of the competitions on Wikipedia is to be dedicated to the topic of theaters. "Behind the Scenes" project would also develop, which would allow our volunteers to peek behind the curtains and photograph numerous theatrical events.

Activities

After contacting 14 theatres in Serbia, cooperation with Theatre “Boško Buha” was established in January. 100th jubilee performance of The Cabinet Minister's Wife was selected as a beginning of the cooperation. Volunteer from WMRS and also a Wikipedian (Marko Adam) took over the communication with representatives from theatre. He helped with selection, scanning and uploading of 23 files on Wikimedia Commons which are illustrating this show. Other volunteers from WMRS watched the show and with the relevant sources (provided by the theatre) wrote an article on Serbian Wikipedia.

Terazije Theatre released 284 photos in the first phase of the cooperation. These photos are illustrating the most watched and visited 18 shows (Some like it hot, Chicago, Zona Zamfirova, Grease, Cabaret…) and only texts as main resources for articles that will be written on Serbian Wikipedia. Solid cooperation With this theatre was established and further plans are ongoing. This institution has shown high level of professionalism and also interest for other Wiki projects such as Wikinews. Workshop on editing Wikipedia was held to the representative from theatre. The plan is to write an article about this institution on Serbian Wikipedia.

What worked and what did not?

Communication and responsiveness of Theatre “Boško Buha” was complicated. There were a lot of problem in realization of the planned activities. Great help ceme from volunteer Marko Adam, who was persistent and with personal contacts led project to the end. Volunteer Jelena Prodanović was more than dedicated in writing an article of high quality.

Everything worked as planned with Terazije Theatre.

Wiki takes Galleries

Goals

This project is implemented in Serbia for the first time now, and is based on a model of other Wiki takes... projects. Galleries are institutions with great potential, which were not used enough in our projects until now. After the invitation to this event, several galleries in Belgrade gladly responded to our action. In 2016, within this project at least 3 two-day photo-tours would be implemented by Wikimedians/Wikipedians in the galleries. Firstly, a group of volunteers would be organized to visit exhibition spaces and photograph artworks and exhibitions. Afterwards, they would upload the gathered material on Commons with adequate descriptions. If the opportunity arises, edit-a-thons would be organized, aiming to add uploaded photos in Wikipedia articles, or to write articles about exhibition authors. Representatives of the galleries accepted this idea with great interest and are willing to cooperate. During the photo-tours they will provide guides who will help the volunteers through the exhibition and assist them in collecting information about the exhibits (author, work, technology, etc.). This project has several goals:

• greater participation of volunteers in projects
• creating more photo content
• establishing cooperation with galleries

Activities

In the first half of the year this project wasn’t realized due to the increased number of activities on other projects and programs of Wikimedia Serbia. All activities were postponed for the next period.

Wikipedian in Residence

Goals

Engagement of Wikipedian in Residence is an ambitious project which was realized for the first time in 2014 within the GLAM project. The aim of this project is to establish a good, two-way cooperation between Wikimedia Serbia and cultural institutions (GLAMs). Wikipedian in Residence should:

• intermediate between Wikimedia Serbia and GLAM institutions
• promote the idea of Wikimedia among employees in GLAM institutions
• work with employees and assist them in better understanding Wikimedia projects
• organize and hold Wikipedia editing workshops, debates, lectures
• maintain connection between the organization and institutions and make proposals for new models of cooperation and strengthening of old ones
• work on digitization
• upload the digitized material to Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons or on other Wikimedia projects

In this way we strengthen cooperation with the institution, enriching Wiki projects with digitized contents, educate employees in the institution, motivate community members (who will be chosen for WiR), enabling them to prosper.

Activities

We began a negotiation process with the University Library “Svetozar Marković” in the second quarter in order for one of the community members to begin working on digitizing the pieces that were scheduled in the Wiki Librarian project.

Wiki Librarian

Goals

Wiki Librarian was created in 2015 aiming to educate and connect librarians. Through workshops and edit-a-thons, librarians had an opportunity to get acquainted with editing Wikipedia and other Wiki projects. As the workshops were very well attended, we decided to continue with this project in 2016, with the following objectives:

• Spark interest in the librarians to become successful Wikipedians
• Expanding network of libraries and other cultural institutions and their introduction to the activities of Wikimedia Serbia
• Creating a richer, more quality and more informative content on Wikipedia
• Digitization of written works and upload on Wiki projects
• Spark interest in students from the Library and Computer Studies Department to create free content on Wikipedia

In addition to organizing workshops for participants to upload quality content (text, images, videos, literature), focus will be on digitization and uploading library content (publications, photographs, postcards) on Wikisource or Wikibooks.

Меasures of success:

• Cooperation with 5 cities in Serbia and at least 10 institutions;
• Organization of 4 - 6 lectures at University Library “Svetozar Markovic” and other cultural and education institution in Serbia about Wikimedia Serbia, Wikipedia and editing Wikipedia;
• Organization of 5 - 8 workshops which will last for 6 hours in well equipped classrooms (up to 12 participants per workshop) at University Library “Svetozar Markovic” and other institutions with necessary equippment and internet access outside of Belgrade;
• Organization of 2 to 3 edit-a-thons as a help for librarians with editing content on Wiki projects
• Eight workshops (workshops with new attendants and repeated workshops to raise participants’ confidence to edit Wikipedia on their own)
• Establishing cooperation with the Library and Computer Studies Department on the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade (students will edit Serbian Wikipedia). Workshops will be organized during the spring semester as a part of the Digital Text course. Students can earn up to 10 ESP points for this assignment within Digital text course. They’re obligated to create or improve article of at least 3500 bytes (4 points), to create structure of an article - 4 headings (2 points), to put one photo (2 points). If aplicable, they can put template for info box, if not, it can be replaced with 1000 bytes. The same goes for photos in articles. References and template {{ВикиБиб2016}} are obligatory
• Digitization of 5 literary works from library archives in libraries that are interested in training and uploading articles, as well as free content on Wikipedia and other Wiki-projects.

Activities

• Two workshops were held: in Smederevo and in Vranje.
• Student practice of the Library and computer department was initiated.
• Two lectures were held within the project. One lecture was held during the Open Education Week, which had an incredible media coverage. Also, the information about the event appeared on the global Open Education Week page, which we consider an extremely important occurence for Wikimedia Serbia, Wikipedia in Serbian language, and the Wiki Librarian project.
• A paper by Aleksandra Popović, Đorđe Stakić, Oja Krinulović: Young People as Wikipedia Editors was accepted to participate in the seminar Library Evaluation and Management: From Traditional To Innovative which took place in Teslić on April 14 and 15, when it was exhibited.
• A paper by Aleksandra Popović, Sanja Antonić, Oja Krinulović, Đorđe Stakić: Open Science on Wikipedia: Libraries’ Activities in Serbia was accepted as a poster at the 22nd INFORUM conference that took place in Prague on May 24 and 25, when it was exhibited. The paper was very well received and we noticed and there were a lot of questions about editing Wikipedia.
• Third and fourth workshops were held for the Library and Computer Department of the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade students. Each workshop was held for two groups of students. There was a lot of involvement from the librarians who had to “fix” the articles, but the end result turned out to be fine. We gained 34 new articles and one was improved, and they were very diverse in topic.
• One workshop was held in Belgrade.
• Wiki Librarian project was presented at the WikiLive event. University library “Svetozar Marković” and Technical Sciences Institute SANU participated at the conference that took place at Startit center, recounting their experience in working on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. University library “Svetozar Marković” participated with a lecture by Aleksandra Popović: Wiki Librarian - Experiences and Results of the Project o the first day of said conference. A session Librarian Quarter - Wiki Librarians - Panel Discussion, with Igor Živanović (librarian-informator of the Department for catalogue information of the University library “Svetozar Marković”), Milica Ševkušić (senior graduate librarian of the Technical Sciences Institute SANU), and Milica Vučetić, a long-time Wikipedian (a graduated librarian). The event was covered on the University Library “Svetozar Marković” website.
• Two Wiki-marathons Scientific Magazines in an Open Approach were held. On the first marathon, the librarians were writing articles, and the second marathon was organized for the magazine editors who opened new accounts and wrote articles with the help of the librarians. The second marathon was organized in the form of three workshops due to a large response from the magazine editors from all over Serbia. Excellent articles were written, along with magazine cover photographs that were released by the publishers of those very magazines, and then uploaded on Wikimedia Commons.

What worked and what did not?

Librarians and workshop participants that also took part last year, continued to work on the Wiki Librarian project this year as well. Librarian Wikipedians were now better trained, and the articles they wrote or improved during workshops were of much better quality than those from last year. Only one article had a template because it contained no references, but that user was editing on his own since he was unable to attend the second day of the workshop in Vranje. The organizers and participants of the project were shown new ways to edit articles. The next step in the project is to invite librarians that stood out in editing from last year, and have them further trained. The scope of the librarians’ tasks was diminished compared to last year’s in order to motivate the librarians to edit articles on Wikipedia. That yielded good results, both as encouragement and as fulfilling items from the tasks.

There was a template made for the needs of the edit-a-thon about scientific magazines, and it was sent to the librarian colleagues and magazine editors. It was extremely useful because everyone had a model that they based their work on. It made the articles even in quality, with all the necessary and relevant information on the topic they treated. After the first workshop of the second Wiki marathon, additional explanations for editing articles, consent, photos that would be set alongside the text were sent, and the editors followed and respected those instructions. The second and third workshops went much better due to the more detailed instructions.

Additional information

• Miroljub Stojanović from the National Library of Serbia promoted the Wiki Librarian project with librarians from Vranje and Surdulica. Librarians were very interested in having the seminar held as soon as possible in their respective towns, and it was organized at the beginning of March.
• A seminar was arranged for October with the City library Vladislav Petković Dis in Čačak.
• Wikipedian in Residence will begin working at the University library “Svetozar Marković” on July 8th. It is expected to have 8 publications uploaded on Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons during the summer months. Two publications are from the National library in Vranje, one is from the National library in Smederevo, and five are from the University library fund.

Digitization of techno culture

Goals

The project represents the digitization of analog archives of techno culture in Serbia from the collection of the international art organization named Technokratia, other organizations, festivals, clubs, artists, collectors, fans, in the period from 1990 to 2015. The archive contains thousands of hours of video records, thousands of photos, invitations, posters, programs, texts, articles, newspapers and other materials of various events and projects of club and techno culture (festivals, concerts, parties, exhibitions, performances, installations, interviews, conferences, forums, design, fashion, extreme sports, research, media and other projects) in which hundreds of local and foreign artists had been involved, and who have been followed by millions of young people in Serbia. The objectives are as follows:

• Making available to the whole world an ordered, organized and documented history of Serbia’s techno and club culture and connect it with the world’s history of music, art, culture, media, as well as research and educational institutions that use the free knowledge, by placing such material under a Creative Commons license
• Forming a big free base, platform and system on Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia in Serbian language, through which the future creators and users of cultural, artistic and media power will be motivated to supplement their own, correct and add new content in this area, a then network and quote it, and feel free to use it as knowledge. In this way, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons will become the main source of information in this, for media and users a very interesting field, and in time will really increase visibility, relevance, citations and media exposure.

Measures of success

• Gather 1000 content of different types (video, audio, print, text…) in the first faze
• In every other faze digitize that content
• Choose 100 materials that can be used, edit, montage and upload them on Wikimedia Commons
• Connect these materials to each other
• Secure strong media promotion through interviews, press conferences, exhibit, promotions as well as conference participation, round tables and lectures

Activities

• Establishing in which archives and in what kind of formats potentially interesting content for this project can be found.
• Making a list of areas which can be covered by these archives as well as number of analog carriers and topics.
• Further analysis of archive:
  1. Video: 170 analog video cassettes of different formats
  2. Audio: 20 analog audio carriers of different formats
  3. Photo: around 30 photo albums
  4. Print: 10 collections of leaflets and posters
  5. Files: 10 archives until now (data on events from 1994, 1995 and 1996 were reviewed, information about 327 events from 1996 to 2003 are in digital form now)

Note: Larger analysis on available content is done, and afterwards it was decided what of this content will be digitized.

• The selection of technical partner for digitizing content is done. Technical partner digitized selected 20 hours of video content (out of 170 analyzed) and successfully finished its work.
• As soon as video content is delivered, content for further processing, editing, producing, post-production, publishing will be selected. Articles on Wikipedia will be written about these topics.
• We are currently working on selecting a technical partner for the production and post-production of content.
• Team of volunteers individually digitized 2 hours of analog audio material (out of 6 reviewed), 270 photos (out of 600 reviewed) and 65 printed materials (out of 200 reviewed: posters, leaflets)

Materials from 90s are very valuable from documentary point of view, especially video materials (they’re in raw condition), but only a small part of it can be used for digitizing. Out of those which are digitized, most of them need additional processing and editing and post-production afterwards.

This is not just a project of digitization, but also a kind of research in the field of digital (video) archeology and anthropology, and after that, a work on history of popular culture, creative industries and media of that time. Uploading these valuable files on Wikimedia Commons and writing articles on Wikipedia about this topic will open a lot of doors for public reaction, further research, publishing and documenting content from this field, networking with actors of this scene in Serbia and worldwide. In this way, a new dialog will trigger restart of the collaboration of artists and producers in the field of techno culture, but also a new research and work of global and local theoreticians and historian.

What worked and what did not?

Working on the project is functioning well. The scope of work has exceeded initial estimates, but it's helped by including additional work and additional collaborators.

The most important stage - the stage of research, finding the materials, and their analysis is carried out. It was found that the material is good enough that we can have quality selection, which has been done.

There is still a lot of work to be digitized, materials are analyzed, and then the processing, producing and post-production, and after that publishing and for some of them writing articles (or articles connected with them).

It is very good that just the review of the material, which is now available for the first time in digital form, causes a very good response in all who are involved in this project, and that gives them an additional impetus to work, to express creatively and to finish and publish it as soon as possible, with the best possible quality.

Wiktionary

Within the Wiktionary project, cooperation with departments of the Faculty of Philology will be continued. In addition to the existing project, Language laboratory is also a part of the program. Project description and objectives, time frame and measures of success for each of these activities are given below.

Cooperation with the faculties

Goals

This project has been significantly expanded compared to 2014. Students from different departments of the Faculty of Philology (University of Belgrade) have joined us (Arabic, Swedish, Norwegian, Chinese, Slovakian, Ukrainian). The objectives of this project are firstly expansion and development of Wiktionary, but also education and participation of the students and other enthusiasts on the projects. Last year it was evident that students need a lot of time to master the rules of editing articles, as well as help and supervision from the assistants. Cooperation with these departments will continue, but the extent of the activities will change depending on the number of interested students and availability of the assistants. Some of them will include translating articles into the program. As the projects are long-term, some of the assistants will incorporate this as a regular practice and will focus more on quality rather than quantity. In addition Wiktionary will be expanded for one more dictionary. Negotiations with this department is still in progress.

Activities

In mid-December 2015 meetings with assistants from the Faculty of Philology were conducted on restarting the Ukrainian, Slovakian and Chinese dictionaries. Assistants justified the lack of involvement of students during the previous academic year by too comprehensive materials and liabilities at the university, and were ready to motivate students as well as to activate themselves on monitoring the entry of new words for this year. During the first three months of 2016, the students were relatively busy by exam periods, and 16 new words were added in the context of Arabic dictionary, while in other dictionaries audits and reorganization of articles and templates were performed.

In order to increase the motivation of the participants in the project, in 2016 a gathering had been organized, which was multipurpose. It was an event called Deli Monday, organized in cooperation with the Cultural Center Grad. In this event, the organizers are preparing food portions which can be purchased for a symbolic price. Bearing in mind that the project 1001 Arabic word is the most active project, we organized an event of the same name. For the organization and preparation of food volunteers participated in this project, as well as Libyan chefs. Due to the situation of migrants, all the money that was gathered was donated to charity, to help the refugees. The event was very well visited. Visitors were members of the community, all those who were interested in WMRS projects and Arab culture, the media, as well as refugees.

What worked and what did not?

Everything worked according to plan. It is expected that the first semester is less active due to exam period of students participating in the project.

Language Laboratory

Goals

Language laboratory has the ultimate goal of creating or perfecting grammar dictionary of Serbian language in electronic format and publishing it under a free license, which can be further used as a base for creating other projects (spell and grammar checking, text analyzers, automatic translation, and similar advanced functions).

In accordance with Education projects’ objectives, the project will contribute to quality content and will be based on voluntary work by the "Citizen Science" principle, which is an innovation in the creation of dictionaries in general. The software will allow independently processing each word by more volunteers, and when their results coincide, that word will be considered correct. This will further lead to the expansion of Wiktionary. Certain content in Serbian language (eg. declension, change of verbs through various forms, and such) could be generated through code, instead of the previous manual entry and correction. With the help of the marketing team of the University Library "Svetozar Marković" and developed cooperation with the media, the project will be promoted to the general public, which will consequently lead to the spread of knowledge on the issues of free knowledge and free licenses.

Objectives:

• creation and development of free electronic Serbian language dictionary
• releasing the software code under a free license
• enriching Wiktionary through generating certain content in Serbian language (e.g. declension, change of verbs through various forms, and such) through code, instead of manual entry and correction used previously
• promotion of free knowledge and Wiktionary
• contribution to the creation of free quality content based on volunteer work with "Citizen Science" principle which involves voluntary work of students
• presenting the project and promoting Wikimedia Serbia on a gathering at the University Library and an international conference
• media promotion of the project for the academic and general public, and raising awareness of free knowledge and culture of sharing free content and attracting new users to the Wikimedia projects, and members of Wikimedia
• dissemination and application of new knowledge in the scientific community in Serbia through the network of academic libraries during and after the project.
• coordination of further activities in this field with the aim of keeping the sustainability of the initiative through the library network and media promotion.

Activities

From January to March 2016, project team has been working on data analysis from the previous period.

In the second quarter several activities have been conducted:

• Presenting Language Laboratory on Wikimania hackaton
• Official laboratory opening on the following address http://lab.unilib.rs/
• Creating the scheme for converting the noun to Nominative in Serbian language (this will be used for the search engine)

What worked and what did not?

Project activities were late because of the communication with the project leaders.

Community support

The goal of this project is to create and maintain a better and healthier atmosphere in the community, establish better communication with the community, and increase the members’ motivation. In order to fulfill these goals, the program was divided into several segments:

• Animating the Community
• Wiki South
• WikiLive 2016

Each of these projects is imbued with the idea of decentralization and increasing the community involvement in the projects.

Animating the Community

Goals

A number of activities within this project will be and is realizing with a goal to increase motivation and community involvement in the Wikimedia Serbia projects. The idea is to animate the members of the community to stay active in Wiki projects, to get involved with local projects, and be notified about the ongoing Wikimedia movement events. In order to secure a high level of participation, we will use different communication channels: blog, mailing list, social networks, website, Wikipedia Village Pump. Expanding the activities outside of Belgrade will entail volunteer participation from other cities in Belgrade events. These volunteers will have their travelling expenses refunded, for when they have to come to conferences, meetings, and similar events. It is quite common that community members become more motivated after the gatherings/conferences, and start sending ideas for new projects.

Applying the proactive approach while looking for partners in local organizations from various Serbian cities is one of the ways to focus on strengthening the capacity of the community. Priority targets will be associations that gather young people, interested in social activism and volunteer work. There are numerous activities in Serbia that can be synchronized with the activities of WMRS, and in that way motivate potential volunteers. Youth offices, Serbian travel society, non-government organizations that deal with informal education, are some of the target partners we can have a fortuitous cooperation with in educating the public. Enthusiasts from all over Serbia have the motive and desire to get involved with our projects and be useful. WMRS will try to provide everyone with a chance to live up to their potential. Through organization of photo-tours, workshops, meet-ups, the young can write articles about the places they visited, upload photos, promote the work of the organization at local events, organize exhibitions, negotiate with GLAM institutions about the models of cooperation etc. All of this increases not only volunteer participation, but also expanding activities, action, and disseminating knowledge in other Serbian cities. In order to achieve greater satisfaction of the participants in these activities, it is possible to organize a final event. It can be a debate, promotion of activities, i.e. a manifestation with a display of the volunteers’ work results, which should entice the attendants to delve into this type of challenge and get involved with the Wiki world.

Activities

Within the project following activities were conducted:

• 15th aniversary of English Wikipedia was organized by Wikimedia Serbia. For Wikipedia 15 community meet-up was organized at Wikimedia Serbia office. Visibilty of WMRS and its projects increased owing to media coverage of this event. In addition, WMRS awarded Wikipedian of the year with annual memberships in National Library of Serbia and Belgrade City Library. Prizes were provided by these institutions, which are also partners of WMRS.
• 13th aniversary of Serbian Wikipedia was also organized, at WMRS office. It brought together members of the community, as well as numerous journalists.
• Community members were invited to participate in WMRS projects. The most active Wikipedians were jury members for CEE Spring 2016. User group of Republic of Srpska was involved in competition too. It has been agreed that competition would be organized in cooperation with User group in Republic of Srpska. Wikimedia Serbia was giving three awards, while books were given for the greatest contribution, to the author of the best article and for the best newbie.
• Wikipedians were involved in edit-a-thon, which was realized with World Mime Organisation. Some of the volunteers weren’t present, but they wrote articles online.
• During the first half of the year 30 blog posts were written regarding current events and projects.
• In honor of the former vice president and valuable member of the community, late Branislav Jovanović, Wikimedia Serbia Board decided to give out a yearly award bearing his name. Starting this year, the award will be given to outstanding Wikipedians and Wikimedians who are contributing to sharing free knowledge. In 2016 this reward was first given on WikiLive conference to Milorad Dimić (User:Intermedichbo).
• Community meet-up was organized on Ada Ciganlija in Belgrade, in the form of Wiki picnic. Event was announced on blog, site, Facebook and mailing list. Personal invitations were sent to the community members and about 15 of them came. This was the first time that WMRS organized this kind of meet-up in nature. The idea of picnic was to create positive atmosphere for the community.
• At the end of June, initiative for organizing a quiz for the community in pubs was made. Pub quizzes are very popular in Belgrade and they are being held at several locations during the week. This kind of event is good because it’s strengthening team building activities within the community.
• Initiative for organizing writing week on cultural heritage was launched at the end of June. Wikipedia page for it was made and members of the community were invited via standard communication channels (Village Pump, social networks, mailing list). It has been decided that two writing weeks on cultural heritage should be organized from July 4 to July 17. These kinds of activities are being held on several Wikipedias worldwide. For global initiative there’s a page on meta. Wikipedians will write about cultural monuments, art works, books and their authors. Participants can write about cultural heritage in Serbia, but also about cultural sites in various other countries.

What worked and what did not?

Wikipedia 15 and Wikipedia 13 had huge media cover. Community participated in some of the WMRS projects, which is a good base for bigger involvement.

Due to the large number of activities, apart from Wikipedia 15 and Wikipedia 13, other community meetups weren’t organized. Current projects, formal and informal activities are time-consuming and they imply engagement of staff and volunteers in terms of organization. This is the reason why these meetups will be organized when conditions for better organisation and more people are better.

The Travel Club was contacted within CEE Spring 2016 project. We thought that their members it could be interested in participation in this competition. The call was sent to their forum, but there was no feedback.

WikiLive 2016

Goals

WikiLive is a local Wikipedian Conference, first organized by Wikimedia Serbia in 2015 (report can be seen here). After interactive sessions and meetups, participants filled out evaluation forms from which it was concluded that their satisfaction was on high level as well as the desire to participate in the conference next year. Taking into account the satisfaction of participants, speakers, fruitful discussions and ideas that participants got at the end of the conference, it was decided that WikiLive should become a regular practice. The project is designed to bring together Wikipedians and Wikimedians in one place in order to strengthen community and increase their motivation. In this way, through secondary activities the visibility of Wikimedia projects will increase among the community. The two-day program will include a variety of sessions that will be lead by experienced Wikipedians, covering topics from the world of Wikimedia Serbia, but also news and successful stories from other chapters, and will feature new tools that can be used.

Proposals of the last year’s participants were taken into account and the program included interactive workshops and debates. The workshops were be adjusted so that they can be attended by those with, and those without experience.

Like last year, scholarships were provided for the volunteers outside of Belgrade and from the region, allowing them to cover the costs of accommodation, transport and food. After the conference, we expect continuation of the work of active volunteers, but also the inclusion of new ones into Wikimedia Serbia projects.

Activities

Organisation of WikiLive conference started at the beginning of February. Firstly, an open call for volunteer participation was sent. Several teams were made: team for logistics, promotional team, team for communication with participants and program team. The idea of the conference was the same as last year - gather Wikipedians from Serbia and region and create an interesting two-day program with various themes from the Wiki world.

In the first quarter, assignments were divided per teams as follows:

• Team for logistics worked on finding accommodation for scholarship recipients, venue for the conference and purchasing promo materials.
• Program team designed topics that could be discussed about on the conference and made a draft of the program. While doing that, they paid attention to participants’ feedback from last year. That’s why sessions like WikiDojo or World cafe were included in program. In addition, Wikimedians from Bulgaria, Macedonia and Republic of Srpska were invited to present activities in their communities.
• Team for communication with participants had an assignment to send personal invitations to Wikipedians. After the date and venue were confirmed, open call for scholarships was announced at the beginning of April.
• Promotional team didn’t have much work in the first quarter. Promo activities were getting into focus as the conference drew closer.

Cooperation with Start-it center continued in terms of providing venue for the conference. When teams were formed, assignments were divided, venue was found and program draft was ready, application form was created and open call for scholarships was announced. Promo activities during this period were various and a lot of Wikipedians who weren’t from Belgrade were contacted. Out of 24, 17 of them got scholarships. Among these scholars, there were speakers from other cities from Serbia and from the region. Communication team coordinated communication with participants and everybody was timely informed about the program, speakers, maps with venue, hostel and WMRS office on it. This all could be found on Wikipedia page of WikiLive 2016. Before the conference all preparations were conducted - promo materials were prepared (t-shirts, nametags, bags with folders, notebooks and program), logistic preparation was conducted at Start-it center (they provided internet, electricity, projector and other necessary equipment). Evaluation form was prepared for all participants as well as registration form.

Before the conference, press release was published on WMRS site and blog. WikiLive 2016 was held on May 14 and 15. At the very beginning of the event, Katherine Maher, then interim Executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, wished for a successful conference. Through the video message, Katherine pointed out the importance of this kind of meet-ups for the volunteer community such as community of Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Serbia.

Statistics on Wikipedia were presented by longtime Wikipedian and administrator, Filip Maljković. Attendants could hear about the most read articles, about ones with the biggest number of edits, to see current trends on Wikipedia and their connection with social events and changes.

Ivana Madžarević, Project and Community Manager, and Milica Žarković, Education Program Manager, presented projects and activities of Wikimedia Serbia. Through this presentation, participants had an opportunity to see WMRS’s work on promoting and enriching Wikipedia. Education program is definitely among the most important programs of the organisation. Within it, pupils and students are writing their seminal papers on Wikipedia. Speakers used this opportunity for promoting Wiki Loves Earth competition which was ongoing at that moment.

A great deal of attention was devoted to collaboration between Wikimedia Serbia and cultural institution whose representatives participated in panel discussion GLAMers. Among panelists there were Marko Stojanović, President of World Mime Organisation with whom we organized World Mime Day edit-a-thon. Dušan Kaličanin, President of TECHNOKRATIA talked about the current project Digitization of techno culture in Serbia. In this project focus was put on digitizing and releasing audio, video and other content related to techno culture in Serbia, from 1990 until today. Collaboration with Botanical Garden Jevremovac was presented by Marija Gajić. She was Wikipedian in Residence in this institution and enriched Wikimedia Commons with over 1000 free, high quality photos of various plant species from the Botanical garden. In addition to the mentioned projects, project of librarians from the University Library Svetozar Marković was also presented. Wiki Librarian has a goal to network and educate librarians through workshops, lectures and edit-a-thons. Experience was shared by Aleksandra Popović, Milica Ševkušić, Milica Vučetić and Igor Živanović. Also, within Wiki Librarian, several works were digitized and uploaded to Wikisource such as National encyclopedia of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. In this way, other Wiki projects such as Wikisource and Wikibooks are being enriched. These projects, but also Wikinews, Wiktionary, Wikispecies, Wikimedia Commons, Wikiquote were presented on WikiLive conference. Speakers were the most active editors on these projects - Miroslav Loci, Vladimir Jovanović and Nikola Smolenski.

Conference was local in type, but it was a good opportunity to gather Wikipedians and Wikimedians from the region. Guests from Republic of Srpska, Macedonia and Bulgaria attended and participated in the conference too. They shared experience from their community - how community in Republic of Srpska is evolving, how Wikipedians and Wikimedians from Macedonia are collaborating with theatres and how they’re working on overcoming the gender gap. Wikimedians from Bulgaria showed a challenge that has infected the global community - 100 Wiki days. Several Wikipedians on the conference accepted the challenge.

Second day of the conference started with WikiDojo, and result of it was an article Some like it hot, show that has been played at Terazije Theatre.

World cafe session was in the program for the first time. Participants were divided into groups and with the help of moderators, they worked on three different topics from the Wiki world. The result of these discussion were numerous ideas that can affect on strengthening the community and overcoming challenges.

Conference was open for all. Participants who didn’t edit Wikipedia or other Wiki projects until now could hear from Đorđe Stakić about Wiki syntax and his experience as an editor and administrator.

More experienced ones and those who wanted to hear about the new ways of using the free knowledge could hear about Wikidata from Goran Obradović. He explained why Wikidata is important, how we can use it and he showed some examples.

Creative Commons lecture helped audience to find out what these licenses mean, what conditions exist and have to be respected and how to use them properly.

Decentralization is a a huge part of Wikimedia Serbia strategy. This is why short presentation was made by a representative of Wiki South project. Slobodan Stojičić, director of Youth club Ančiki presented results of this project and future plans.

Conference was officially closed by President of Wikimedia Serbia, Filip Maljković. He gave out the award Branislav Jovanović. This award will be given to the most active Wikipedians and Wikimedians for biggest contribution to the free knowledge. First one is Milorad Dimić (User:Intermedichbo) who has been writing and improving Wikipedia articles about medicine and also about other geographical and historical topics.

Grades from evaluation forms were gathered. Average grade on how participants were satisfied with the program was 4,84 out of 5.

What worked and what did not?

Everything functioned as planned. Plan and every deadlines went well.

There were some minor setbacks when it came to the conference venue. Response from Yugoslav Cinematheque (with whom we attempted cooperation in the form of providing space) was late, so the organizing team arranged space with partners with whom we already had cooperation - StartIt center.

Wiki South

Goals

This project’s focus is on strengthening the community in Jablanica and Pčinja district. Wiki South is an extension and continuation of the project resulting from last year's microgrant (For future to know who we are, walk the free knowledge to the past) and has been implemented in cooperation with the Youth Club Ančiki. The ultimate goal of the project is training and educating 20 Wikipedians from Jablanica and Pčinja, for active work not only on Wikipedia but also on Wikinews, Wikimedia Commons, Wikiquote and other projects by increasing the amount of free information on the Internet.

The result of this project will be 200 new articles on Wikipedia and minimum 500 photos on Wikimedia Commons.

Activities

During the first quarter, all the activities within the project Wiki South came to fruition:

• First of the February activities was preparation, organization, and work plan, during which the basic requirements were fulfilled for a quality project tasks execution. A scanner and a printer were acquired, and a camera was delivered to the club.
• In the beginning of March there was a call for project participants, and 22 people applied. The first workshop, which served to get the participants acquainted with Wikipedia, was held on March 19, 2016 in Ančiki Youth Club, and had 20 participants. Photos from the workshop can be seen here.
• During the first quarter, the organization team worked on the preparation of the camp on Vlasina lake titled “How to Become a Wikipedian”, which was realized in April. The main objective of the seminar was to get the participants acquainted with Wikipedia and educate them on how to become a Wikipedian and how to actively participate in working on this project. The topics of the seminar were as follows:
  1. What is free knowledge and why is it important to be an active participant in promoting free information and informal education
  2. How to edit Wikipedia content
  3. What is Wikinews and how to take part in it
  4. How to make a good photo and the importance of visual identity
• Photos from the camp can be seen in the Participants of Wiki South category on Commons. The camp had 20 participants and 2 coaches. It took place on April 22-24, 2016 on Vlasina lake.
• During May, the first workshop within the monthly thematic activities workshops was held. The first workshop entitled “Leskovac 101” is a lecture based on a publication of the same name that was held by an archaeologist and tour guide Nebojša Dimitrijević, who spoke about the history of Leskovac and the cooperation between the National museum in Leskovac and OKAN on the Wiki South project. After the lecture, participants were working on adding new articles and photos on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
• The lecture was held on May 25, 2016 in the Ančiki Youth Club. The workshop had 20 participants.
• During June, the workshop devoted to writing and updating new articles on Wikipedia was held, which also had the objective to assemble information for Wikiquotes and Wikinews. The workshop was held on June 27, 2016 in the Ančiki Youth Club. There were 13 participants at the workshop.

Assembling and editing Wikipedia content was continued over the course of the second quarter, just as planned.

What worked and what did not?

Everything in the first half went according to the planned project activities.

Microgrants

Through the program of giving microgrants, Wikimedia Serbia wants to encourage individuals and/or organizations to come up with new ideas and to implement them. Some projects do not require a lot of resources and with the good will of volunteers they can have great results. Quite often, they can grow to become annual projects with a greater amount of activities and participation of volunteers. Public education, decentralization, animating and increasing the participation of community and people who have not participated in activities of Wikimedia are just some of the goals of this program. Looking at the projects from previous years, it has been decided to divide microgrants to:

• standard grants, which will be given to applicants of projects with different goals (projects which include GLAM, Education activities etc. or they have WMRS promotion and public education as goal)
• photo grants which will be given to applicants of photo projects - collecting and uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons along with possibility of editing Wikivoyage.

Standard grants

Micro grants have shown to be successful in terms of increasing the interests of individuals and organizations to implement activities that later grow into larger scale projects. This project achieves several strategic priorities. The participation of volunteers is increasing the quantity and quality of free material on Wiki projects. We are actively working on decentralization and on expanding activities in other cities in Serbia, so increasing of visibility and education are some of the goals that are realized through these grants. It is interesting that three of the four projects, which last year received microgrants, were proposed for the annual plan. Of the three, two were accepted (Wiki South and Kurgans in Serbia). Considering these results and the fact that the micro grants are good incubators of ideas with little risk, the practice of assigning resources of this type will continue. They are also a good channel for promoting the call for submission of annual projects.

Activities

The first thing that was done in the first quarter was forming a Committee for Decisions on Project Proposals. The Committee consists of two board members and the Project and Community Manager. The Committee was formed so that the other board members would be relieved and the decisions would be made more quickly. After forming the Committee, a proposal form was made and a call for participation in project funding submission. The call was sent out to the community and the wider audience through standard channels of communication: Wikimedia Serbia blog, mailing list, Wikipedia Village Pump, social network profiles.

A timeframe of activities was set:

• February 22 - Sending the calls for assembling project proposals.
• March 22 - The end of applications and the beginning of selection.
• April 1 - First round of selection.
• April 15 - Final decision on which projects would be funded.
• April 18 - Project realization beginning.
• October 31 - Project realization ending and beginning of writing the final reports.
• November 30 - Deadline for delivering final reports.

The Committee received suggestions, gave feedback to the project proposers, and helped them create final project proposals. Ranking and selection of the projects were performed in April.

What worked, and what did not?

In 2016, the public response with the projects was somewhat weaker than last year. A total of 9 proposals were received, and 2 were accepted. The most common reason for rejecting the proposals were requests for a larger budget than was planned or abandoning Wiki context.

• Lingvopedija / Linguopedia

Goals and Project Description

Young Linguists Association wants to get involved with editing articles in Serbian language by organizing writing new and editing and improving existing articles. “Lingvopedija” represents an article base on Wikipedia in Serbian language devoted to linguistics, that the Young Linguists Association wants to set into motion and form. That would enable the public to become more linguistically educated, which is especially meaningful in order to debunk linguistical myths and dispute language stereotypes. This project would actually be long-term, because “Lingvopedija” would be edited and increased every year. Wikimedia Serbia will provide trainings for the members of the Young Linguists Association and a number of interested students of Faculty of Philology on how to edit Wikipedia articles, with a special focus on articles on the science of language.

The project is set to last 6 months in 2016 (from May to October), during which a more permanent editing team of “Lingvopedija” would be formed on three edit-a-thons, in addition to training on article editing - a team of students who would write, and a team of professors who would review the articles. The number of articles that the team would write/improve during this project would be 50. In the end, the entire project would be promoted in October, and the announcement of “Lingvopedija” as a long-term project would be made, so that other interested parties would join in the following period.

Activities

Young Linguists Association sent the project “Lingvopedija” proposal to Wikimedia Serbia on April 8, 2016. Representatives of WMRS invited the representatives of the Association to a meeting in which project amendments were considered: working out the phases of the projects and the budget in accordance with Wikimedia standards. After the agreed upon changes, the final project proposal was submitted on April 19, 2016. Contract between Wikimedia Serbia and Young Linguists Association was signed on May 16, 2016. Wikimedia Serbia paid the Association the amount of money according to the dynamics written in the contract.

Since then, the following activities were performed:

1. marketing activities - a public call for all interested participants to get involved with the project;

   The Association has announced a call for participation by using electronic channels of communication. The focus group was the students of all stages of studying philology-related subjects. Google poll on the project was conducted, Prezi commercial was made, project was advertised on social media and over targeted mailing lists.

2. introductory meeting with the future project participants;

   The introductory meeting was held on June 11, 2016 in the Youth Offices “Gnezdo” in Belgrade. Aleksandra Pešić presented the project in the meeting, Ana Barbatesković held a presentation about writing and mentoring articles, while Olga Arsić held a presentation about the platform for collaborative work “Trello”, that would serve as a means through which the students would further communicate. 19 interested students attended the meeting. After the meeting, more interested people expressed their desire to participate via e-mail, so the current number of people involved with the project is 41.

3. training with the representatives of WMRS;

   Training was held at the same time as the introductory meeting, on June 11, 2016 in the Youth Offices “Gnezdo”. Goran Obradović held a lecture “Article Style on Wikipedia”, and then Ivana Madžarević and Milica Vučetić held a presentation on the technical aspect of working on Wikipedia.

4. organizing a network of mentors;

   In order to make “Lingvopedija” articles the best quality possible, mentors, professors from Philology faculties and institutes from all over Serbia that WMRS has established cooperation with started to get involved in writing articles. Before it is published, every article will go through a professorial review. Professors praised our initiative and accepted to participate in the project. Ana Barbatesković is in charge of creating a network of mentors and mentor-participant coordination on “Lingvopedija”.

5. selection of writing topics and writing and mentoring the first articles;

   Participants of “Lingvopedija” have declared on “Trello” on subjects they will be writing about and in what time period they would deliver written and mentored articles. As expected, the first marathon had the smallest number of participants, due to the July exam period. It is expected that most of the articles will be finished by the August marathon.

6. preparations for the first edit-a-thon were made in June, but it was realized in July. Call for participants was sent out. Project was supported by WMRS’s partner - Singidunum Univerity - by providing the space and infrastructure to conduct the marathon. The results of the marathon will be announced in the next report.

What worked and what did not?

The positive sides of the project so far:

There is enthusiasm for work on this project, both with students and with professors. Organization is working according to plan, both writing the articles, and organizing events. There were no problems within the group.

Spotted difficulties and suggestions on how to solve them:

1. Picking a topic turned out to be a problem for everyone; oftentimes it was too extensive for a single article. This problem was overcome by dividing the topic into several smaller themes and articles.
2. Scientific-popular style has proven to be challenging and more time-consuming than a scientific one, which the students already have experience with. The proposal for overcoming this problem is working with a mentor and consulting with the group for peer comments.
3. The necessary time for mentoring an article is often longer than the participants plan, because professors have a lot of other commitments.

• Divlji Viki parkovi / Wild wiki parks

Goals

The project was submitted by the Biology Association in Niš, which would once again increase WMRS’s decentralization activities. Bird fauna, the most attractive residents of the city parks in Niš, is unknown to people and its representation in articles and photos on Wikipedia is very important, because that would be the first written testament of their existence. The Association has an insight into a large portion of printed and electronic literature on ornithology, and it is the primary focus of some of the members of the Association who participate in international actions of bird inventory (International Waterbird Census). Photos of the birds would be a contribution to the project Wikispecies. Many types of birds that can be spotted in cities have not been described in Serbian language, except the most attractive ones. The rest of the living species in the cities that would be studied through the project has also never been described to the public. Niš’s public parks are not at all described from a biological and ecological aspect in Wikipedia articles, and the articles about the Čair and Sveti Sava parks are incomplete.

With that in mind, the idea of the project is getting to know the bird fauna that reside in 4 of the largest parks in Niš (Čair, Bubanj, Sveti Sava park, and the Fortress), by organizing field activities and constant monitoring from June to the end of August. The goal is also to collect around 400 photos of birds and parks, and writing 4 Wikipedia articles about 4 largest parks in Niš (2 new and 2 improved), as well as 30-40 new articles about the bird species that can be found in those parks but have not been described yet, are insufficiently described, or do not have an article written about them at all on Serbian Wikipedia or Wikispecies. There will be around 400 uploaded photos on Commons, of which about 50% would be used on other Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikispecies).

Activities

As predicted by the activities schedule, field activities have so far been executed in all four planned parks in June, and collecting information is well underway for proof of presence of certain bird species and collecting photos. Another realized activity is printing and designing T-shirts for the field activities participants.

What worked and what did not?

There have been no problems in the realization of any activity so far.

Photogrants

After last year's call for submission of projects for the annual plan, we concluded that many projects were in fact photo project (collecting photos with specific theme and uploading them to Wikimedia Commons). In order to create a balance between educational, GLAM and photo projects, it was decided that next year, in addition to standard microgrants, there would also be photo grants. These grants would be available throughout the whole year. They are suitable because they represent a good way to interest individuals who are not close to other Wiki projects and to expand activities not just on collecting photo materials but also to use them in articles on Wikipedia. Projects of this type will be suitable for the promotion of Wikimedia Serbia through exhibitions. Also, people who have photography as a hobby usually apply for these projects, so high quality of the resulting material is expected. It is important to note that in the plan for 2016, Wiki Safaris are not included as a separate project but the realization of the same is possible through the allocation of photo grants which will cover the costs of transport, accommodation and food. Photo grants applicants will also be referred to editing Wikivoyage. They will be able to communicate their observations of the places they have visited and photographed. Wikivoyage is not so rigorous in terms of the rules of editing and represents a good place for beginners to get to know more about the Wiki world.

Activities

Project realization plan is the same as the Microgrants project, except for the fact that the photogrant submission is open all year long. In the first quarter, we first formed a Committee for Decisions on Project Proposals. The Committee consists of one Board member, Communications Manager, and a community member who is a freelance photographer. The Committee was formed so that the other members of the Board would be relieved and the decisions would be made more quickly. After forming the Committee, a proposal form was made and a call for participation in project funding submission. The call was sent out to the community and the wider audience through standard channels of communication: Wikimedia Serbia blog, mailing list, Wikipedia Village Pump, social network profiles.

Timeframe in this project was not necessary seeing as the call is open all year long. Project proposers were informed that the decision on accepting or declining the project would be sent at the latest 20 days after the project submission.

Committee received proposals, gave feedback to the project proposers and helped them create a final form of the project. Ranking and selection of the projects was performed in April.

The call was announced in February. Two out of six proposed projects that were sent in the first half of the year were accepted.

• One picture - 1000 words - Journey Around Pirot

Goals and project description

The Pirot region is very poorly researched due to the specific geographic position. There are a lot of things people are missing out on, and there is no way for them to be presented to the public. This grant will showcase what people avoid to see on a daily basis, but carries cultural and natural importance. From historical and archaeological heritage, through everyday life, to specific biological species, Pirot is a city that has all of that in great amounts, and the potential is not being used. Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia are a great place for integration of photo records and short texts that are lacking as far as this region is concerned. This project would promote the Pirot area and its heritage.

The activities primarily consist of field activities and flora and fauna photography, but also Pirot’s cultural heritage. Some species, as well as architecture, archaeological and local cultural heritage, would be given Wikipedia articles. Flora and fauna would get about 70% coverage, while architecture, archeology, and tradition would get around 30%.

Project realization period: March 1 - October 31, 2016.

Activities

Project started in March even though the contract was signed at the beginning of April in order to document the species that appear first - ephemeral plants, that blossom when the forests are bare, i.e. without leaves. The first serious, more demanding activities began in April, when the mountains, specific habitats, and localities around Pirot were being toured in search for species that are encountered at the beginning of the spring migration and briefly detained in these areas. Seeing as these are species that have a migratory (temporary) stay in Serbia, at the Niš (only) eastern corridor, they are significant because they only make this stop to replenish before they continue the migration to the North, and it is very important to know what species they are. Larger portion of the activities was performed in the Pirot pit in the first two moths, while the Balkan Mountains part proved to be very unpredictable in that period due to poor weather conditions, which continued to be like that all through May and June. A great number of photos was made by July 1, even though they were uploaded on Commons a bit later because the volunteer who was the project leader had other commitments that coincided with this activity. Some species and cultural-archaeological places were not photographed in this period, i.e. most of the uploaded photos are images of living creatures (the emphasis was on biodiversity), but seeing as the project proposal said that there would be photos from other categories, that is going to be taken care of in the second half of the year.

What worked and what did not?

Everything about the field activities organization went according to plan, only the weather conditions were sometimes unsuitable for photography and sighting of the localities. As for the project leader, who has never edited before, he was having minor difficulties with the photo uploading process.

• Kulturno nasleđe Mačve i Pocerine / Cultural Heritage of Mačva and Pocerina

Goals

The purpose of the project is to collect photos of cultural heritage on the territories of Mačva and Pocerina. The project entails field work and photography of cultural monuments, monument heritage from the wars by this time, public buildings, schools in the inhabited areas of the Mačva district, and religious objects (churches, monasteries, chapels…) of the Eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Šabac.

In addition to the inhabited areas, 24 orthodox churches and 1 monastery were visited, out of 80 churches and 12 monasteries of the Eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Šabac.

By working on this, a light was shed on the details that were missing, that complete the image of the inhabited areas and life that happens in them. The objects were photographed in a documentary fashion, without enhancements and in current state, so they paint an accurate current picture in the archives. There was also no selection regarding the type of buildings (school, cultural center, local community building…) or monuments, depending on the period they represent (Serbian uprisings, WWI and WWII, and recent wars on the former Republic of Yugoslavia territory and NATO bombing).

Churches as an important segment of life and tradition in the Serbian territory have been fully included in the research, so all the religious objects are being inspected, regardless of the time they were built. We gained full support and approval from the Bishop of Šabac Lavrentije in these endeavors, the clergy as well, who understood the purpose of documenting the state of buildings, both interiors and exteriors. They promised to help with delivering information on history of the churches as buildings, and temples of the Šabac Eparchy for the articles on Wikipedia in Serbian language. So the churches built in late 20th and early 21st century were photographed for the first time, such as the churches in Majur, Metković in Mačva and Pocerina, Bukor, Mišar, on Cer…

Special attention was given to cultural monuments and their level of protection and care from the institutions in charge, the locals, and Serbian Orthodox Church, in case they were religious buildings. Some of the cultural monuments on the Mačva district territory were photographed for the first time thanks to the Project, and categories were opened and existing pages were updated for them, with a rich number of photos. For example, the Memorial Ossuary church in Dubalj, where for the first time a photo of the crypt with the bones of the Serbian warriors and Czechoslovakians who fought on the Austro-Hungarian side was taken. The Church of the Transfiguration in Krivaja from 1790 (monument of culture of great significance), as approved by the priest, for the first time there is an interest to be documented. Church in Zasavica as a monument of culture has been adapted and a new icon painting was made that we were first to photograph. There are also churches that are in the process of being included as monuments of culture, like the ones in Mehovine, Banovo Polje, Orid, Brdarica…

With further involvement and tours, the number of photos will increase that will also mark the monument heritage of the rich history of the Mačva region from the 19th century to recent past.

What worked and what did not?

Everything went according to plan. The overall impression in contact with the local people on the field is very favorable, meaning that they were very helpful with the information on certain monuments, as well as churches where they allowed photos of the interior to be taken with great understanding of the clergy.

Additional information

Wiki corner

Starting with 2016, Wikimedia Serbia has decided to set up a Wiki booth on certain locations, a so-called Wiki corner. The idea of the booth is to proactively work on Wikipedia promotion and to get passersby acquainted with Wiki syntax, and the fact that they themselves can easily contribute Wikipedia. The idea is rather experimental in nature and has two objectives: to involve active Wikimedians in this type of offline activities, and to animate new editors. Since this is an experimental idea, ambitious results are not expected. The representatives of Wikimedia Serbia and Wikipedians will prepare texts with sources for these occasions, and show the passersby how to create a new article, to improve an existing one, add a category or new information on the spot. Bearing in mind that certain events are very well attended, we agreed to realize Wiki booth within current popular manifestations in Belgrade. Following agreements were made in the first half of the year:

• Wiki corner during Explorers Night: Wikimedia Serbia is a part of the Explorers Night project, and will set up the Wiki booth. Promotional activities are planned prior to the manifestation. The following activities were performed in the first half of the year:

1. a part of the project was written together with the organizers that concerns Wiki corner
2. several meetings were held between the representatives of Wikimedia Serbia and the Explorers Night organizers
3. a prepared and branded Wikimedia Serbia booth has been purchased and will be set up at the beginning of July in the “science truck” of the Center for the Promotion of Science
4. coordination of the volunteers who will be at the booth has been performed

There is a possibility to organize a contest on Wikipedia that would be thematically tied to the Explorers Night. In that case, it would last during September, and it would end on September 30th, the date of the Explorers Night event.

• Wiki corner during Filmstreet: Filmstreet is a summer cinema that has over 30 movie projections during summer months in open spaces in Belgrade. Filmstreet organizers have been contacted and the activities we suggested were accepted. Wikimedia Serbia will set up a Wiki booth during certain projections, where passersby would be able to edit movie and theater world topics. The summer cinema lasts until September. The first Wiki booth was set up at the very opening - June 17th - in the Students park in Belgrade. The organizers of Filmstreet have provided an internet stick, electricity, and a desk. Wikimedia Serbia has purchased a branded booth that would be used for these purposes in the meantime.
• Wiki booth on Telfor, telecommunications forum: After the announcement that Wiki booth would be set up during Filmstreet, an old Wikipedian, who is the organizer of Telfor, contacted us. He proposed that the booth be set up during this telecommunication forum in November, which Wikimedia Serbia agreed to.

Employees

Since the beginning of 2016, with a purpose to provide better monitoring and control of annual activities, the role of employee coordinator was given to the Project and Community Manager, Ivana Madžarević. The employee coordinator delivered monthly and tri-monthly employee evaluations, monitored their work and reports, and took care of the project deadlines that needed to be met.

During the first half of the year, the personnel was weakened because of the maternity leave of our Education Program Manager, which required finding a substitute for her for a period of one month, until the Education courses are seen through to the end. After that, an official job search for Education Project Manager was announced, and the plan is to have one person hired in that position by the end of summer, so that they would be ready and comfortable to do the job by themselves by the beginning of the school year. A Committee was formed that is already working on ranking and selecting the candidates.

Annual plan

Wikimedia Serbia is planning to submit an annual plan to the Wikimedia Foundation, like in the previous years. A letter of intent was composed with that in mind. A timeframe of activities is as follows:

• announcing a call for annual projects - by July 1
• accepting project proposals - by August 15
• first round of selection - August 25
• second round and final decision on accepting the project - September 5
• August and September - writing the annual plan and creating the budget

General assembly

Fifteenth General assembly meeting was held on February 21, 2016. Meeting announcement was sent by the president of the organization, Filip Maljković, and the topics were as follows:

1. Approving the minutes from the 14th Assembly
2. Electing the new, affiliate, and honorary members
3. Electing the members of the Board
4. Electing the vice president of the Organization
5. Adopting the financial report for 2015
6. Evaluating the projects from 2015
7. A report on the work of the Board members in 2015

The assembly was attended by 10 regular members of the association. The minutes from the fifteenth General assembly meeting can be seen on this link.

Media report

In the first half of 2016, Wikimedia Serbia was very present in the media. The reason for that was an active relationship between Wikimedia and the reporters, carefully prepared press releases, an overall improvement of the existing relationships with the media, but also the cooperation with strong partners on projects that drew media attention.

A total of 360 project and activities announcements of the Serbian branch of Wikimedia were noted. Most of them were on the internet (275 posts), but a mild increase in presence was noted on television (44), radio (21), and press in particular (20).

The beginning of the year was marked by the celebration of English Wikipedia’s 15th birthday that drew a lot of media attention, which resulted in 68 announcements. An appearance on the Morning show on the Radio Television of Serbia (public media service) was especially noted, in a time slot when the average ratings are about 1.5 million people. All leading daily newspapers with significant circulation also wrote about this important anniversary. It is important to emphasize that a lot of help with media promotion came from WMF. Press releases, put together by the community members and the Foundation’s PR sector, were precious and were filled with myriad of interesting information, but also promotional guidelines from talking to Samantha Lien.

Celebration of Serbian Wikipedia's 13th birthday in February drew an equal amount of attention. In addition to the event announcement in the media and media appearances, the very celebration was attended by several news crews, and Pink television (that has nation frequency and the audience of millions) devoted a lot of attention to this jubilee, through live broadcasts and WMRS’s Communication Manager appearance on their program. The interview for the IT magazine “World of Computers”, that has a long tradition, was especially important. The total amount of media mentions of this anniversary was 65.

Promotion of the “Digital Belgrade” project was organized in February, which involved the presence of the Mayor of Belgrade. It had very good media coverage and resulted in 23 media announcements.

March and April in the media were marked by GLAM activities. Edit-a-thon was organized on World Mime Day and cooperation with the president of the World Mime Organization and famous Serbian actor Marko Stojanović resulted in 52 announcements. Wiki librarians were active as well, who appeared in the media 10 times during Open Education Week, but also 8 media outlets reported on the WMRS announcement about successful GLAM cooperations.

Traditionally, the biggest amount of attention from the media was received by the Wiki Loves Earth photo-contest. We actively worked on finding media sponsors this year, so the important media outlets (Radio Television of Vojvodina, Studio B, Večernje Novosti…) have officially become our media supporters. Radio Television of Vojvodina enabled airtime for a commercial that lasts up to 30 seconds, five times a day, during prime time over the course of the first and the last week of the contest. Almost all other media outlets in Serbia were very interested in reporting on this contest, so the outcome for now is 87 announcements. This project is expected to have two more exhibitions, so the number of media posts that would round up this contest will be much larger.

We would especially like to single out:

• an appearance on “Žikina šarenica” - contest announcement
• an appearance with the winner of the contest
• an announcement in the daily newspaper “Politika”
• live broadcasts from the events - TV Pink, Studio B
• a release of a Wiki Loves Earth photo in the weekly newspaper “Blic žena”

Other activities and projects of WMRS were also present in the media to a lesser extent, so the public also heard about the 3-year anniversary of the 1001 Arabic Words project, the two-day WikiLive conference, contests on Wikipedia, as well as the activities titled Wiki corner. Outside these activities and the WMRS program, Wikipedia as an encyclopedia was frequently mentioned in passing.

We could conclude that the first half of the year was successful regarding media presence. Cooperation with the media strengthens, new contacts are being made. It is noticeable that the reporters are growing more and more familiar with the work, activities, and projects of WMRS, and are starting to express interest in new reporting themselves. Experience shows that they benefit from having WMRS prepare all the material for reporting for them, which also ensures correct informing about us and our work.

Wikimedia Serbia cultivates an even relationship with all the representatives of the media, but it has shown that carefully selected and targeted media (for various projects) enable the most announcements. Giving Certificates of appreciation for media support also results in getting more media attention, but also strengthens the relationship with the media.

• Global metrics are an important starting point for grantees when it comes to measuring programmatic impact (Learning Patterns and Tutorial) but don’t stop there.
• Logic Models provide a framework for mapping your pathway to impact through the cause and effect chain from inputs to outputs to outcomes. Develop a logic model to map out your theory of change and determine the metrics and measures for your programs.
• Importantly, both qualitative and quantitative measures are important so consider both as you determine measures for your evaluation and be sure to ask the right questions to be sure to capture your program stories.
