Purpose of the report edit

This form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their results to date. For progress reports, the time period for this report will the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). For impact reports, the time period for this report will be the full 12 months of this grant, including the period already reported on in the progress report (e.g. 1 January - 31 December of the current year). This form includes four sections, addressing global metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.

Telling your program stories - all programs edit

Overview of this quarter edit

The purpose of this section is to provide a brief overview of this report. Please use no more than 1-2 paragraphs to address the questions outlined below. You will have an opportunity to address these questions in detail elsewhere in this report.

CHANGES: Please describe how you changed your plans and budget based on the FDC allocation approved by the Board in December 2013, and your rationale for these changes. You can then use the changed plans and budget as the basis on which to report back on the first quarter.

  • As we have presented the grant to hold Iberconf 2014 in Buenos Aires our budget has been modified at some point for this reason. Even though we already had a budget amount to attend the anual meeting, it will be used for specific expenses within Iberoconf 2014, and a specific grant has been requested to cover the event. However, the budget won't suffer notable changes as the grant will be used in its enterity for the correct development of the regional meeting.

HIGHLIGHTS: What were 1–2 important highlights of the past quarter? (These may include successes, challenges, lessons learned.)

  • One of the highlights of the last quarter was the inclusion of the Education Coordinator. This improvement aims at dealing with one of the main targets of this year: to develop a comprehensive Education Program, designing as well a strategy in the education field for Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. We have been working on projects to cover all the educational levels -primary, secondary, professional, academic and teacher's training- and, in order to carry this out, we spent these last three months identifying the strategic stakeholders in terms of defining the outcomes expected.
  • Changes in the staff have been, and remain, a challenge to face. While the new staff members have previous experience working for other institutions, and even having the support of all the members of the Board, we are still adapting ourselves to the new responsibilities and meeting the demands that such kind of work implies in order to perform our duties in the best way.

WIKI-FOCUS: What Wikimedia projects was your entity focused on (e.g., Wiki Commons, French Wiktionary) this quarter?

  • We have focused mainly on Spanish Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, the two largest projects by number of active volunteers from Argentina. We have, also, designed a project with the UNESCO to work on Wikivoyage.

GROWTH: How did your entity grow over the past quarter vs. the previous quarter (e.g., Number of active editors reached/involved/added, number of articles created, number of events held, number of partipants reached through workshops)?

  • Compared to the last quarter report and taking into consideration the activities carried out during this last quarter, the total number of attendees and participants has been very similar.
In particular, and thanks to GLAM activities, we reached the following numbers:

-Edit-a-thon with Amigos del Tranvia: 30 participants.
-Edit-a-thon spanish exile: 20 participants
-Edit-a-thon in Mendoza: 20 new participants.
-Presentation in Virtual Educa Perú: 20 new participants.
After this quarter, we will be able to consider our outcomes and evaluate the results of enacted agreements in a better way.

Financial summary edit

Education Program
What are the objectives of this program? Please include metrics.
  • Aim: The main goal of the program is to increase the adoption and usage of Wikimedia projects in Educational environments (with a strong focus on secondary and higher education), promoting students, teachers and academics participation and the use of Wikipedia as a teaching tool.
  • Metrics: Design of an Education Program for Wikimedia Argentina to face this initiative in a more comprehensive and organic way. Also, number of agreements with institutions, number of events (workshops, lectures) organized, number of participants, number of new Wikipedians, number of new volunteers and quantitative analysis to measure the impact of the activities lined up. The metrics estimated are the following:
  • Number of activities made (by institution, by geographic place, by type)
  • Number of participants (students/teachers/others, by level of Wikipedia knowledge)
  • Number of institutions involved, agreements signed.
  • Level of satisfaction with the activities (Survey exemple here.
  • Impact on the projects: in order to approach metrics from a more comprehensive way during this quarter we have been developing our own WMAR monitoring reports (see here and here) as a response according to our commitment to assess properly the projects carried out by our chapter
Progress against these objectives (include metrics and # of volunteers/staff involved)?
  • Education program: Done.
During this quarter the Education Program has been developed. Although the Education Manager was hired just three months ago, Melina Masnatta along with support from our team has been able to make great strides towards WMAR Education's targets.
The development of the Education Program has followed a progression. You can find it described below:
  • First phase: This phase has been implemented in a cross-cutting manner. The process of designing an Education Program has been based since the beginning with respect for creating strategic action lines and a proper eduation framework by including the main benchmark actors in the educational field in Argentina. From April to June we have been able to define with relevant educational actors the current situation regarding Argentina's education field. The Participatory Action Research method has provided us with the knowledge and efficient tools to address the challenge of designing an Education Program involving all actors on behalf of public and private institutions and civil society. In this sense, every project designed regarding education has been worked closely with all actors involved to develop better proposals together. We have been able to create what we were looking for: an Education Program where teachers, students and the Educational Community in Argentina and the so called Global- South play the leading role.
  • Second phase: From May to June and after a first intensive month of meetings and field analysis, we started to define which necessities within the Wikimedia projects, particularly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, were required in the varied local context and we started co-creating together specific projects to respond specific needs.
  • Third Phase: In June and after several twists and turns we were able to define in four strategic actions the main framework of the WMAR Education Program.
  • Fourth Phase: A great number of projects are predicted to be developed during the third quarter. All of them have been already approved and represent for WMAR its cover letter regarding the education program. Find more about all of them below:
  • Agreements:
  • We signed an agreement to design a work plan regarding education for the next two years with FLACSO (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales). Currently, FLACSO and WMAR are working on a publication that will see the light within the next few months. After the success of the Educatón that was held in the first week of April and once FLACSO had analysed its results and outcomes, we note the relevance and the importance of being able to develop a guideline to let other chapters know about this kind of activities that are online, free and open and deal with topics such as digital culture or the use of Wikipedia as a learning tool. In this sense, and from the WMAR point of view, the activity was very relevant. Thanks to the Educatón, and after four days of working with teachers all over the LATAM region, we found out the teacher's challenges with new tecnologies and their perception regarding Wikipedia as a learning tool, which helped us to define our priorities in terms of designing and creating new projects and programs.
Along with the publication, WMAR and FLACSO are planning a project to work with FLACSO's teachers network with the purpose of creating in a collaborative way and from the teacher's view different teaching guides to work with specific Wikipedia articles involving the highest number of subjects. More information about this project will be provided on the Q3 report.
  • WMAR and CITEP-UBA (Institute of Technology and Pedagogy of University of Buenos Aires) have desinged a project that will be launched, in its first stage, in November 2014. Even though we haven't singed an agreement yet - the cooperation agreement is in its legal department and it is a complex bureaucratic institution- it has been approved behind the scene. In this sense, we are working closely and the framework of the project is finished and approved as well. "Wikifuture: pictures of the University today, the structure of the University of tomorrow" aims to encourage students of the National University of Buenos Aires to express through different audiovisual material their own views of the university: what it means to them, what are "their places" and how, by re-thinking collectively the current university model of management, we expect the future to be. The project will invite students from all of UBA's faculties to create audiovisual material and upload it to Wikimedia Commons, as well as encourage them to mash-up and remix their own creations in order to resignify, redisign and co-create the university of the future.
  • WMAR along with RELPE (Latinoamerican Network of Educational Portals) have agreed to offer a Training Course to one hundred teachers that belong to the network. This course, which is planned to be launched on September 15th, will address relevant topics regarding digital culture, free licenses and "Wiki projects" and how to implement them in the classroom. All the thematic axes are addressed with a cross-cutting view regarding the Wikimedia projects that will be taken as the main examples, with the purpose of resignifying the needs and the reality of the attendees as teachers. The proposal aims to be an active exercise beyond the theoretical framework, to produce and disseminate digital culture.

  • WMAR and the IBERTIC-OEI (Iberoamerican Institute of Information and Communication Technologies and Education of the Iberoamerican States Organization) will launch their project on August 15th. Based on the idea that there is a lack of free images of Argentine schools (both about buildings and everyday school life) we have designed a contest appealing to all teachers from public and private schools in Argentina to participate. Again, teachers will play a leading role. The project, lasting three months, will provide a tutorial about Wikimedia Commons and encourage the participants to describe what their pictures mean as a way to preserve their cultural heritage.
  • The project presented to Conectar Igualdad (National Government; Education Office) has been approved. Even being in an early stage we are attending the first meetings with the local facilitators of the program from inland areas of the country. The proposal is based on workshops from a more comprehensive point of view. Every training has been adapted to all actors involved in the public policy - inspectors, mentors and students- as a way of developing core subjects like digital culture, free culture, Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects.
  • Educatina: website of educational videos. One video about digital culture and the importance of the wikis as learning spaces has been produced and a second video about Wikipedia as a learning tool has been approved. More information about this subject in the Outreach section.
  • In progress:
  • WMAR has submitted the project "Innovative Schools" to the Buenos Aires City Government. We are currently waiting for an answer to start working and have the opportunity to include it on our education program.
  • Educ.ar (the main educational portal of the National Government) and WMAR are starting to work together in two relevant projects. On one hand and collaborating with the team of educ.ar, we are analysing the current materials, mainly teaching guides, that they have already posted on the portal under the concept "Wikipedia in the classroom". Trying to find out what new material is necessary, we are on the early stage of defining what we are going to produce. On the other hand, we are designing a editing contest to be launched among the students of argentinian schools, under a direction yet to be defined. At this moment, just the main framework has been developed. More information can be found here.
  • ORT School, one of the main tecnological schools of Argentina and WMAR are close to reach an agreement to edit a publication similar to "Cases of Studies", written by the teachers but with the difference of being a school that manages the technology from a cross cutting view. The goal is that all subjects and all secondary students, with the commitment of all teachers, will use technology and all its potential as a learning tool.
  • The Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires (National School of Buenos Aires) and WMAR have presented to the school authorities, and after overcoming some difficulties, our proposal. Consisting in two different projects, in the educational field we aim to train, in digital culture and Wikimedia projects, the largest amount of teachers, knowing it is a community still mainly rooted in old-school methods. However, due to hard bureaucratic comings and goings and the fact that the program must be scheduled in consonance with the school's calendar, it will most probably materialize at the beginning of 2015.
  • WMAR and the National University of La Plata and specifically the Faculty of Legal and Social Science have designeded a Research Seminar proposal. This seminar, which is focused on improving the legal articles that are available on Spanish Wikipedia, is an innovating response to train the future researchers through a collaborative work environment method.
  • WMAR has been confirmed to partipate in the 2014 Lained Event on August 26th.

Activities conducted.
  • Virtual Educa Perú 2014: Virtual Educa was held in Lima from June 9th to June 13rd. On behalf of Wikimedia Argentina Melina Masnatta was invited by RELPE to participate and talk about the Wikimedia projects and specifically the education program. Melina's presentation focused on the relevance of promoting an active and responsible use of collaborative projects. Free culture as a gateway to use and disseminate digital contents in diverse formats, and the Wiki methodology as a way of being that generates encounters between multiple voices for consensus' construction were key notions developed. The event also represented a great chance to show the uses and practices incentivated by the Wikimedia projects and their relevance for educational spaces. Collaboration spaces between Wikimedia and RELPE were highlighted: the dissemination of interactive educational resources, the generation of an experiences and best practices lab and the promotion of educational content and publications. This event represented the first presentation of our Education Program and the first materials designed for its purpuse with the new contents.
  • Balcarce Book Fair 2014: WMAR was invited to talk about the Wikimedia projects, digital and free culture and Wikipedia as a learning tool, in the Book Fair of Balcarce. The presentation focused on the relevance of using Wikipedia as a teaching tool in terms of improving the student's literacy skills. On the other hand, as a learning tool, Wikipedia was presented as the perfect space of working together and build knowledge collectivelly.

What worked and what did not?
  • All the activities carried out had relevant results. All were aimed at the main educational target of approaching and promoting the wiki culture to new participants and new educational environments.
  • We have done great steps towards our education targets, but working from scratch and developing an Education Program has taken all these three months. We are sure that great outcomes are about to come, but designing, reaching agreements and implementing projects requires time until positive results- in terms of numbers- begin to emerge. As a team, we agree in emphasizing all the effort done during these months and we are completely sure that we are in the right direction.

  • Aim: The main purpose of this program is to establish partnerships with cultural and heritage institutions (GLAM) for activities that promote the inclusion of content on Wikipedia.
  • Metrics: Number of colaboration agreements signed and institutions participating in GLAM activities, number of activities organized, number of participants attending the events, number of articles edited/photos uploaded, press mentions, impact on Wikipedia after edit-a-thons, lectures and presentations.

  • On Saturday May 31st we organized the second edit-a-thon of the year, along with the Amigos del Tranvía association (link in Spanish). The event's goal was contributing to create a collective memory and preserve the heritage about the most loved and missed of all public transport systems in Argentina. The event allowed not only public access and sharing on graphic and written material on the subject, but also the chance to reflect in the new articles the richness and depth of the Amigos del Tranvía Association members' experience and memories. The results of the editions added by the attendees were up to the expectations. Approximately 30 people assisted and the following articles were improved: about the Amigos del Tranvía Association, about the Tramway, and about the Buenos Aires Historical Tramway. On the other hand, the following articles were created: about the Tramway in Argentina, the Anglo-Argentine Tramways Company, Tramways in Buenos Aires, Tramways in La Plata and the Tramways in Argentina Annex (all links only in Spanish). The process of digitalization and future donation of historical graphic material and itinerary maps to Wikimedia Commons also started (some examples can be seen here). The Edit-a-thon ended with a closing tour on a still-functioning tramway unit through the streets of Caballito and the agreement to have a second edition of the event in August.

  • The third edith-a-ton of the year was a joint edit-a-thon with Mexico and Spain and took place on June 14th at the Casal de Catalunya in Buenos Aires. Its main goals were to recover and share the cultural capital of many spaniards forced to exile in order to save their memories as well as their lives. In Buenos Aires we carried out the event with "Los Niños de la Guerra Civil Española" association. Deeply emotional due to the nature of the topic, the richness of the testimonials, the construction of a generational account that can only be told by the protagonists and the recollection of many images and historical documents demanded a video and audio recording that includes interviews and will be the base for an audiovisual documentary on the Spanish exile in Argentina and the experience of the children of the war. This material is being gathered in a special category in Wikimedia Commons.
In the Mexico event many articles were edited, such as Comisión Administradora de los Fondos para el Auxilio de los Republicanos Españoles or the letters in Wikisource from then president Lázaro Cárdenas. Other important articles created were Casa de España en México, where spanish researchers and intellectuals were welcomed to continue their jobs, the Colegio de México; and the Edificio Ermita. Also, users from Spain, recluted by Wikimedia España, collaborated editing from afar, creating many articles in spanish and catalonian. Results Achieved:

The members from the Spanish Republican exile and their testimonials presented the opportunity to approach the preservation of the culture and historical heritage from another point of view. Despite being different from a classic edit-a-thon and after considering the specific circumstances, we carried out an audiovisual edit-a-thon, with relevant material uploaded on Wikimedia Commons.
During the followings months, we expect to realize a second audiovisual edit-a-thon based on the necessity of recollecting the greatest number of testimonials, and to carry out a one day editing activity in order to work with all the material gathered.
The experience of helding a joint edit-a-thon was new. As we think that the event was succesfull enough, we are - all three countries- working on a publication to generate a guideline for other chapters to increase the number of this kind of cooperative activities in the so called Global-South.
 
Mendoza's wikipedians at the I Ambiental edit-a-thon
  • The first edit-a-thon far from Buenos Aires took place on July 6 in Mendoza. Knowing that Mendoza is recognised by its natural richness, the topic that conducted the editions was Natural Conservancy. The event, coordinated by Wikimedia volunteers in Mendoza, and sponsored by a great number of local associations, became the perfect place not just to edit but to meet and build a greater group of people interested in Wikimedia projects. Aroung 20 people attended the event and it received significant media coverage.

What worked and what did not?
  • All three edith-a-tons were succesfull. We had great support from all the cultural institutions we worked with. We maintained as high a number of participants as in previous edit-a-thons held. As well as in the first edit-a-thon a survey was conducted among the new participants with favorable results. We continue improving our relations with public and private institutions to develop new and innovate projects as a way to reach our objetives regarding GLAM activities.
The joint edit-a-thon, a new activity never done before, was a success in terms of implementation and material recorded. All the three countries, resposible for the coordination of the event, were above expectations, working and implementing the edit-a-thon colletively according to the different context realities.
  • As we pointed out on the first report, we still struggle with the ability to summon. Our internal strategy of communication must work better if we want to come up with greater expectations in terms of number of people attending to the events. Our external communication should be improved and we should work with a better communications plan on the positioning of the Wikimedia activities in the local agenda as a way of attracting more and new participants. On the other hand, operationally, we still struggle to reach some other relevant GLAM instutions in Argentina, so any help or training regarding this matter will be more than welcome among the staff and board members.
Community Support

  • The main goal is to support the work done by the volunteers inside and outside the projects, giving them tools to improve their performance. Our main objetive is to create a stronger relationship with volunteers and members of the Association as a way to encourage their participation.

  • Let's Federalize!: On June 5th the first encounter of Wikipedians outside the province and the city of Buenos Aires took place. One of the main targets of this year's strategy is to give our volunteers and Wikipedians, with the staff and Board's support, the leading role. In this sense, the meeting's main goal in Mendoza was to bring our efforts closer and reach out directly with the members of our community in that province. Taking advantage of PENT-FLACSO's invitation to Melina Masnatta, all of Mendoza's Wikipedia editors were invited to exchange visions and information about their activities within the movement, encouraging them to join efforts and generate sinergies to improve the community's contributions as well as to invite them to express their voice in our activities. The meeting was attended by Anna Torres, our Executive Director, and an active group of six editors. The group proposed to generate activities in the education field to promote the educational use of the wiki tools and gather successful case studies, and they also showed great interest in making events in the context of our cultural institution's promotion project to spread all of Mendoza's cultural heritage from a local point of view. Thanks to this event, the first edit-a-thon in Mendoza was held on July 6th.
  • Wikipedians Voice Out: With the goal of empowering our Wikipedia editor's community members, Wikimedia Argentina started a series of posts on its institutional website to spread the word of the true protagonists of our movement, both to the general public and other community members, through two different strategies:
  • Specific interviews to active Wikipedians or developers of any others Wikimedia projects, in order to give them the leading role they hold in our movement and visibility of their expertise. The series begun with an interview to Agustín, a 22 year-old wikipedian very active at the Ciudad de Buenos Aires wikiproject. His dedication and great amount of work are very appreciated by other users and editors and enjoyed by everybody who enters Wikipedia to read about our country's capital, and as such we decided to ask him about his general impressions on the experience of being part of this collective task and more specifically about the impact that contributing to the huge venture of the collaborative creation of knowledge can have. In the next few weeks more initiatives will take place for our community members to express their voice through our institutional channels.
  • Specific collaborations on the Wikimedia Blog: WMAR launched in June a volunteer's invitation to participate as active writers on our blog regarding Wikimedia projects. As the initiative is on an early stage, we expect to have a relevant participation in terms of spreading their voices through the resources we manage in WMAR.
  • Supporting the Hackumentary: During these three months, WMAR has looked after projects that have been built under the the Wikimedia projects' same philosophy. The Hackumentary, a documentary of open code, is set to explore and record the stories where making, taking apart, hacking and repurposing materials to achieve personal goals become key features in defining ourselves as active players in society: we create our own environment to achieve our own needs. We learn what we need in order to make what we want. As part of WMAR's support, we will be working closely to enrich the project, using different channels of communication and becoming, in a way, curators of the project. From a more active point of view, we pretend to approach the project to different countries within the LATAM region.
What worked and what did not?
  • The first action taken by WMAR to federalize our programs was a success. Although it was the first time we approached the Wikipedian's community outside the province and the City of Buenos Aires in a more comprehensive way , the response was notable, finding a community with a great attitude towards developing WMAR and Wikimedia projects. As well as the first meeting in Mendoza, opening WMAR's blog to the community is an activity that we expect to be a success.
  • The event wasn't planned with the time that it really required. As we took the opportunity to go to Mendoza thanks to an invitation by the University of Cuyo, we couldn't inform with enough time all Wikipedians there and not all of them were able to attend the meeting. On the following meetings we will take into account this particular issue.

The objective of this program is to encourage volunteer participation through contests in different Wikimedia projects, attracting new editors, reaching out to inactive users and motivating the current ones.

  • Wiki Tour: In order to improve our cooperation with other chaperts of the region, WMAR, following the successful contest launched and implemented by WMCL, WikiTour, decided to launch from mid August this photography contest. As already noticed in our first quarter report, Wiki Tour reflects the valuable experience gained during the last two years regarding the results of implementing Wiki Loves Monuments as well as being a contest approached from a different angle. Alleging the efforts made by WMAR to preserve the cultural heritage of Argentina, the contest aims to reflect the reality of our local context. Argentina owns a great cultural heritage and its expression does not reside specifically in monuments. Therefore, we have divided the contest in three main categories: Cultural expressions, Natural riches and Achitectural constructions. Latin America and its cultural and natural heritage must be kept and analyzed from another point of view if we want to recognize it as essential values of humanity and diversity as a cultural asset. We believe that by inviting participants to show the culture of Argentina through these main categories we are promoting every contestant to be able to express their own view of what culture means to them. In this sense, the website is prepared for the launch and we are planning our communication strategy as we want to reach a notable amount of people. Additionally, Wikimedia Argentina will be sponsored in this contest by LAN, Latin America's largest Airline holding company. You can find more information here (in spanish).
  • Wiki Travel: WMAR along with UNESCO Argentina have agreed to implement a contest starting on September 1st and carried out with the Unesco Argentina School Network. For the fist time we are involved in a contest with primary students and teachers. This specific contest, "Traveling and the heritage of my country" shares with WikiTour the three main categories to guide the students in sharing their pictures. The innovation consists in taking pictures to work at school with the aid of teachers. Moreover, we want to invite the students from inland provinces to write about and preserve their own cultural heritage enhancing their local contexts. In this sense, this contest will seek approaching primary and secundary students to participate in the Wiki Travel project. Through students' participation with photos and improvement of their abilities to edit Wikimedia projects, we aim to preserve the cultural heritage and be a channel of exposure for the inland provinces.
  • On August 15th, we are launching with IBERTIC-OEI a contest with participation of private and public schools' teachers from all over Argentina. Noticing that there is a lack of Argentine schools' free images, we want to create a bank of resources to address the needs. See more information on the Education section

  • Aim: to constitute a professional Wikimedia chapter in Argentina, able to work efficiently with other institutions and to support and promote volunteers' work.

  • In May 2014 a new Communications Manager was hired. Nicolas Miranda replaced Maria Cruz, the previous CM who presented her resignation for professional reasons. Equally, a smooth and orderly transition was conducted during May as a way to the new Communications Manager to become familiar with Wikimedia and the projects of the current year. Nicolas Miranda owns a degree in Communications from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, as well as +8 years of experience in the communications field. His main duties will helping to promote Wikimedia Argentina's mission and activities from his position, being responsible of keeping the efficiency of its internal, external and institutional communications.
  • During middle May a new external staff member was hired under a contract for a specific project. Dominique Hugues has become during the last two months our main designer to help us to carry out all our commitments in terms of presentations and site updates. Working closely with our Education Manager, she was in charge of the presentation that Melina Masnatta had during her participation in Virtual Educa in Perú. New logos for the Education Program and a new Education site updating (in progress) have been her first projects accomplished. In the near future, new flyers with Wikimedia projects and new teaching and pedagogical manuals will be published.
What worked and what did not?
  • Hiring a Communication Manager has been a wise choise. Wikimedia Argentina is formed, nowadays, by a multidisciplinar team and we believe that our diverse expertise helps to enrich our work and to plan out new projects with a much more solid base.
  • The resignation of Maria has been a challenge to face. She was the member of the staff involved with WMAR the longer, and her voluntary waiver left us with many questions about the communications management as well as an office with a full new team adapting to a new work environment. However, we had an orderly transition, and we are trying to adapt for the best among the three of us powering our strenghts.

  • Aim: To promote increased participation in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, and spread Wikipedia-related knowledge in Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina. To promote the usage of the Wikimedia projects by the general population.
  • Metrics: leaflets produced, reach of those leaflets, number of participants and the attendees to the activities, impact on Wikipedia of worshops, results of surveys done to participants, grants presented in order to archive our main targets.

  • Iberoconf 2014 Grant: Iberoconf, the anual conference of Ibero-American chapters, will be held in Buenos Aires from November 21st to November 23rd. Following the procedure, WMAR has presented (you can see the proposal here) the grant to the Grant Advisory Committee (GAC) and WMF. As a space of cooperation and collaborative work environment, Iberoconf can't be defined just as an annual meeting. Chapters, user groups and working groups gather together horizontally, honoring Wikimedia values, in order to give an appropriate answer to the global context needs through a work structure based on cooperation and team work. Past editions of Iberoconf have been a keystone in solidifying the Wikimedia movement's presence in Latin America and helping each group's particular needs through crowdsourcing. In this sense, we aim to improve the cooperation within the different chapters and user groups in order to produce working spaces to augment the chapters' knowledge, develop relevant agreements and co-design new projects and programs.
  • A new institutional presentation designed: During May, a new presentation of WMAR was designed. Taking into consideration the needs detected on the educational field, new logos and a great new image have been created as a fresh response to new ideas and projects that we want to implement. It can also be used to reach a wider public to disseminate and capacitate everybody on the free culture concept and Wikipedia projects usage. The presentation (only in spanish) can be found here.
What worked and what did not?
  • Both activities were carried out successfully. Compared with the first quarter, we believe that if we have a proper implementation, both of them will generate a continuity in our work.
  • We do still struggle with difficulties when it comes to terms of measuring impact. Even though we think we have developed proper sources of impact in terms of measuring, above all the grant of Iberoconf 2014, both are activities that are in an early stage. We will be more precise about their impact in the upcoming months.

Lessons from this quarter edit

A key objective of the funding is to enable the movement as a whole to understand how to achieve shared goals better and faster. An important way of doing this is to identify lessons learned from entities who receive funds, and to share these lessons across the movement. The purpose of this section is to elicit some of these insights, which will be shared throughout the movement. Please answer the following questions in 1–2 paragraphs each.

What were your major accomplishments in the past quarter, and how did you help to achieve movement goals?

  • The major accomplishments of our quarter have been the Education Program design and all the agreements achieved. In this sense, we would like to emphasize that the largest part of the strategic planification that was pointed out in the first quarter report has followed its natural course and in most cases specific projects have developed as a result. It is also noteworthy that hte new staff (the former was hired in March 2014) is working together for the first time in an orderly way.

Additionally, we carried out a smooth and orderly transition, a great experiencie for future challenges.

What were your major setbacks in the past quarter (e.g., programs that were not successful)?

  • All the staff changes have been a big challenge to face. Even though the transitions have been exemplary, the situation and the need to search replacements pushed back the implementation of some projects. On the other hand, we had to struggle with the bureaucratic system of some institutions that slow down the processes when it comes to sign agreements.

What factors (organizational, environmental) enabled your success?

  • The process of professionalization was one of the things that enabled the success of our chapter. The hiring of a professional in the education field brought us a great impact within educational institutions. Also, having all the different expertise between the projects' coordinators in the same page is projecting notable results. Furthermore, we are now able to divide tasks and responsibilities, which allows us to concentrate the necessary time in each project and alliance, making the most out of the working day.

What unanticipated challenges did you encounter and how did this affect what you were able to accomplish?

  • The resignation of our Communications Manager Maria Cruz was a challenge to face in a moment where all the staff was being renewed. However a smooth transition was carried out and the new Communications Manager was successful in becoming familiar with the Wikimedia projects and the community. This is critical since our work largely depends on a good communications strategy.

What changes might you make in executing your initiatives into the next quarter?

  • For the next quarter, we are considering a slight change in the work dynamics for every project: a division in different stages according to aims and tools for tracking the progress of each project. Work schemes will be more clear from the beginning, identifying the person in charge and all the resources involved. We have to continue focusing on education and communication identifying our different audiences and future new members of the movement.
