  6. I came up with this version more independently than you might think, but whatever, it's a collaborative process. The text pops more thanks to a black outline on some sides.   2. I like the aesthetics of the banner and the slogan a lot. I think it may be worth testing if it gets click-through, and if so, designing an appeal especially around it.     In the United States, in most states, it is unlawful to use someone's image in advertising without their permission. See w:Personality_rights#United_States. This would be the same as Wheaties slapping an athlete on their box without the athlete's permission. (There is a distinction in American law between using someone's image for advertising purposes and using it for informational purposes. The effectiveness of the banner benefits from most readers being annoyed at or wishing the banners to be gone as soon as possible. This factor, and the small amount of contribution requested, will encourage more donations. At the same time, it calls attention to the immense usage of the Wikipedia project. The information is from Sue Gardner's appeal. Sue Gardner's appeal makes a concession, that not all people will donate. I think this shouldn't be made, as it goes against the principle and purpose of the fund raising campaign and the instrument of banners.

Here are some suggestions for the appeal message: edit

The appeal should contain messages like "We depend on you to keep this resource...". However, care should be taken not to alienate readers, and give false impression of an exclusive body, as does the message "Help us...". Instead, readers should be made aware of their vital role as members of the public and beneficiaries of WF's projects in enabling the WF to serve its public mission.

The last sentence and ending note should be an appeal for contribution to a valuable cause to which Wikimedia Foundation's projects serve. It may adopt perhaps the style of appeals for child adoptions and medical donations- a noble and honorable act of giving - "Give the gift of..." as often encountered.

It will be useful to display some of the implementations and impact of Wikimedia projects, to the education of poor children in Africa for example, on the appeal page, and/or create a special display page.

I am inclined to believe that the effectiveness of a text banner will be greater in this case, and may serve to dispel a negative stereotype developed against them. But creativity in text sizes and arrangement, color and button can always be applied. I think in this case, it will be better if the "now" in "Donate now" is lower case.

Observations on interface with the general public: edit

The common approach in the fundraising campaign in appeal messages and proposed banners has been to educate them about Wikimedia projects and the community involved. Not that there is any problem with educating them on these matters, which are important in raising public awareness about the projects, but the principal issue lies in making the projects seem foreign and making people themselves feel like an outsider, which gives them uneasy feelings, especially to make monetary contribution.

The approach that should be adopted is to provide them with a basic understanding of what the Wikimedia projects are, what the Wikimedia Foundation is, what it does and its mission. But this should not be attempted during a fundraising campaign. Then the awareness of the public should be enhanced on the impact that the Wikimedia projects have in the outside community and in the world. The interface of the people with the Wikimedia projects can best be through the application, implementations, and broader impact of the Wikimedia projects in the world. During a fundraising campaign, these ought to be highlighted and people should know of their vital role in making it possible and to continue. If the Wikimedia Foundation is to advance itself, it also has to work in this area to find ever more applications of the Wikimedia projects and have a greater impact on the world. Partnerships, in which the WF has recently been interested, should have this object and should serve to further the WF in this direction.

It's very nice to see that a banner was designed like this. But I still think that asking just $1, referring to readers of Wikipedia rather than of the banner, and noting it will be over within hours will be more effective. However, with the banner that is running now: "If everyone reading this donated $5/ our fundraiser would be over today./ Please donate to keep (project) free. [Please help]", it may be worthwhile to run a trial with $1 and similarly small amounts in other currencies. And if that generates clicks, a trial may be run with the banner referring to "every reader", "every reader of Wikipedia" in Wikipedia's case. Instead of using banners showing single persons such as Jimmy Wales or other wiki leaders it would appeal more to me (and most likely a lot of others) if there were banners showing wiki employees teams, i.e. a lot of people so that it is made obvious that many peoples work is behind this and many of those peoples work is important.

A/B test should be performed to investigate the difference.
