Fundraising 2007/Why Give blog/A few things you didn't know Wikipedia helps

Hello! My name is Chad Horohoe and I have been a contributor to Wikipedia for the past several years. The Wikimedia Foundation recieves many many e-mails on a daily basis, and a team of volunteers help coordinate and respond to them, as the Foundation simply does not have the time to respond to them all. From time to time, I get an e-mail thanking us for our hard work, or telling us some way that we've helped them. Some of them have been truly touching. I'd like to give a short summary of a few of my favorite e-mails I've gotten.

  • Did you know you're helping the homeless? A person assisting with the upcoming Decennial census in the United States e-mailed us recently saying that she uses Wikipedia to help her find information about different municipalities across the country to help with federal planning for programs to help the homeless.
  • A few weeks ago, at the start of the fund raiser, I got an e-mail from a man who was unemployed. He was so dedicated to the cause of the Foundation, he still managed to donate such as he was able.
